I would like to try some tests, and connect to an igate and try this each
time a packet comes in:-

update data set home_igate = " " where calsign= xxxx

See how fast it is

I have been unable to interface the new Delorme Tripmate USB, using the
serial adapter cable, to the TinyTrak3. I was hoping this setup would be
plug-n-play. Surprise! Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yep it was a typo! However, the same source appears to be used in all
three! (APRSplus, APRSworld and findu) since I see some of the same wrong
symbols and identical artwork in the symbols of all of them.

My investigation of the discrepencies between APRS symbol sets originated
when I started to transplant the standard (in the US at least) icons used
by APRSplus, findu, APRSworld, etc into UIview which has it's own set of
symbols created by it's author Rodger G4IDE. Some of these symbols are
slightly different from the US customary ones and might not be obvious to
US users. Furthermore, UI-View's default symbols are 20x20 pixels instead
of 16x16. The larger grid allows for more detail in symbols, but in
intensely active areas like southern Cal, the larger symbols tend to
overlap and clutter the map more. I also wanted the brighter primary
colors of the US icons instead of the more subdued pastels of Rodger's
designs to cut through the clutter of the colors on the Precision Mapping
6.0 screen.

This project started by using Adobe Photoshop to open the BMP files of
symbols provided with APRSplus and the equivalent files provided with
UI-View. The layout of these BMP images is completely different. APRSplus
uses a single long row of 96 cells while UI-View uses a rectangular grid of
6 rows of 16 cells. I used the rectangular crop tool in Photoshop to
painstakingly copy 16x16 pixel cells from the APRSplus set and then paste
into the corresponding positions in a new UI-View set based on a 16x16
pixel grid instead of the original 20x20.

The first thing I discovered is that many of the symbols in the original
UI-View set bore no resemblance at all to what I was pasting into
corresponding positions in the new set I was making.

I spent several hours comparing symbol sets in APRSplus, UI-View, findu (on
the "stations heard nearby" page), the symbols pages at:
      http://maps.aprsworld.net/mapserver/symbols/aprs-symbols/pri/
          and
      http://maps.aprsworld.net/mapserver/symbols/aprs-symbols/sec/

and finally the official icon list in:
APRS PROTOCOL REFERENCE Version 1.0 (the PDF document on the TAPR
website -- I am assuming that this reference is the final word on icon
assignments unless informed otherwise. ).

According to the protocol reference, only UI-View is currently assigning the
correct symbols to every code letter in both the primary and secondary sets.

For some positions, I have had to design icons from scratch to fill the
designated slots. For others, I have borrowed some of G4IDE's designs for
UI-View and shrunk them to fit a 16x16 pixel cell. Especially nice are his
symbols for "Grid Square".

I may throw out some requests for comments and suggestions on this list for
new designs.

For starters, what should an icon for a "Node" look like? I am considering
two designs I have created. One is a series of concentric circles in
lighter and darker red. The other is a small round black spot with 4 thin
lines radiating out of it at 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees.

Another one is the missing SSTV icon. If you set the D700 or TH-D7 to
transmit "SSTV" as an icon (upper-case T in the primary symbol set) you get
a thunderstorm (a symbol assigned to upper-case T in the secondary set some
time ago) when viewed on APRSplus, APRSworld or findu. Very relevent to me
since I use it in my APRS beacon for WA8LMF mobile (my "mobile SSTV
LiveCAM").
I created a new symbol of a TV monitor with vertical color bars for
SSTV about a year ago to fix the display in MY copies of APRSplus, only to
discover that G4IDE had already beat me to it with a nearly identical
design in UI-View.

I have finished updating the primary set and am now working on the
secondary set.

Anyone interested in copies of my new layout for review?

Can you post these pictures somewhere :-) I would love to see what box
you used. I would love to try the same thing.
Thanks!

The only difference between the PDA and laptop versions is the software and
cable bundle. One thing to watch out for is that you have to apply at
least 1 volt on the RX pin to wake it up. See
http://www.grundlgasse.at/thomas/digitraveler/. I built a little board for
my TT3 that goes between the TT3 and the GPS - it's got a 6-volt regulator
that operates off the 12-volt pass-through and also puts a voltage on the
required pin. I pulled the GPS out of its enclosure and hot-glued it to
the inside of the lid of a project box. It only takes up about 3/8" of
space. The box has four hard drive voice coil magnets epoxied to the bottom
and it holds quite well on a car trunk or roof.

Well, I would zoom in on my APRS map to the target area. Look for the
callsign of the nearest IGate and use that one. Kinda like using APRS for
what APRS was designed to do...

Not by 99.99% of APRS operators, it isnt.

Why not use VE3XYZ which anyone of the 20,000 APRS operators worldwide can
see by zooming in *on-their-APRS-maps* to Brampton? APRS is a resource.
WHy not use it for APRS?
