My suggestion would be to use a "directed path" rather than the generic
APRS pathing. To wit,

APRS VIA specificcallsign1,specificcallsign2,specificcallsign3,etc. etc.

This will propagate your beacon along a specific path in the direction
you need to go. You could also modify it for local coverage, i.e.

APRS VIA WIDE2-2,specificcallsign1,specificcallsign2,,etc. etc.

I am taking this discussion off the SIG for reasons as to not start a brawl
on the SIG... BTW... The KF4OTN-3 I-Gate is behind 22 inches of
concrete... 80+ feet in the air... and is on generator backup with at least
three weeks of fuel...

Richard, I have some data for you...

I truly understand what you are doing. I have just installed a UHF
repeater and antennas for APRS with the same considerations in mind here
in South Florida.

If the closest I-Gate is 100 miles away and you apparently have
resources why not set up your own I-Gate? The cost is minimal if any and
the only thing you may not have is a high speed internet connection, it
is almost a requirement but not a MUST have. All you need is a ISP that
does not mind a 24/7 connection.

You do not need a very high antenna, even an indoor one that is
protected would do just fine as long as it can hear the local wide. If
all the WX stations can make it to the local wide then only 1 hop would
be needed.

really tall weird looking guy Mike :o)

I'll be running a TinyTrak in my backpack like I did last year KE4NYV-10
and a path of RELAY,RELAY,WIDE,WIDE,WIDE,TRACE,WIDE8-8,TRACE8-8!!!!!

:o) Now let me see how many hate emails I get for that little JOKE.

See you tomorrow Wes.

No HF??

Me, I'd go Wide,relay,wide8-8,relay,trace8-8,relay
Maybe conservative at one packet per minute.

Why not just setup as a Citizen's Weather station and be done with it ?

In the stated situation this is a VERY bad idea. If only one link in the
"directed path" fails the whole system dies. This is the idea behind
generic paths.

Beacause we are hams...

Nothing wrong with the CWOP program and non-hams but if you are a ham
there is no reason you need to do it on internet only, use RF and it
will be available to those on RF and on the Internet. If you go the CWOP
route it is only available on the internet unless someone gate's the
specific stations back to RF.

The same can be said about why do we use radios as hams? We can do
everything else by phone, modem or the internet there is no need for a
radio. Well we use radio because we enjoy it and it is part of the
hobby.

I bet WIDE2-2 would be sufficient for K4OBX, and still adequate in case of a
digi failure.
Or KB4TOH-10,WIDE1-1
The IGate is hearing you on your first hop, from KB4TOH-10*:

http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/raw.cgi?call=K4OBX&start=48&length=24

Tell your friends:
http://map.findu.com/k4obx

The issue is "reduced throughput" on VHF APRS networks due to packet
collisions, especially between the digis. To maximize VHF network
efficiency, users must minimize their own consumption of the available
airtime, so many others may share some. This is done by transmitting less
often and/or perhaps using less broad digipaths. Kind of like the amateur
need to use the minimum required effective power.
Hope this helps.
73, Cap KE6AFE
