I use the three letter designator for the NWS office that issues the
warnings ie OAX* for Omaha. I also gate Watches rrom the Storm Prediction
Center with the prefix of SPC*. This seems to work for me. From what I'vve
seen the word SKY, SKYWARN etc are used in the to field not the from field.
Mesagges are sent to SKYTOR or sme variation. I haven't found away to limit
SPC msgs to just my region so all watches get sent out. Dave N0XBN-5

I had to fix a few bugs in the program. If you downloaded the program
before this Email you will need to do it again. Sorry for any
inconveniance.
The two fixes are
The WXINF.DTA file was that of any older version. So when you would create
the INF file the coordinates where way off. I also updated the WXINF.DTA
download from the Website to fix this problem.
The second error was a typo in the Installation Directory.
Please let me know of any other error or bugs
Thanks

Hi all!
I have just put a new APRS station on the air outside New Albany, IN,
callsign N4PLE-1. I have a Davis Weather Monitor II connected without the
wind sensors. I hope to get them installed when get a nice weekend with no
State Fairs :-).
My question is, is there a need for EMWIN in this area? I have a Zephyrus
WX-12 system that I have used myself for several years. I have seen some
indications that EMWIN is getting fed over APRS but I have not seen
specifics.
Thanks for any information.

I doubt analog will just "go away" in the next six months - look for a
gradual fade out over the next 5 to 7 years. Something like 65% to 70% of
all US cellular traffic is still analog, according to the CTIA.
If you look at your digital phone, you will notice that it's going to
analog mode more often than you might think. My phone displays a A in a
box when in analog mode This happens a lot in well shielded buildings - at
least to me anyway.

Hmm Looking at my inbox it looks like something happened to the first
posting.
I just uploaded a new version of WebUpdateWX. You can download it at
http://karpfamily.net
Update Aug 25 2003
Uninstall any other version of WebUpdate that you have already installed.
This version is not compatible with some of the files in older versions. New
in this release of WebUpdateWX I have added the ability to save the Radar
Settings. You must first click The load setting button under the WebUpdate
Tab. Then go to the WX radar Graber Tab and click the Load Settings button
there. Make any changes to the settings then click the Save Setting button.
The next time you run the program you will only need to click the two load
setting buttons to reset the program to your setting. I have adjusted the
Canadian URL and Time settings. The reason for this is because the Canadian
Radar Website now uploads new images every 20 minute instead of once an Hour
as before. The new images use a time stamp in the file name and are uploaded
on the 8, 28, 48 minutes after the hour. So to download the Canadian Images
you will need to set the Zulu Time offset for your time zone. Make sure your
computer clock is on time. The Time offset is a cushion to make sure the
image is there when you try to retrieve it. The defalt time is set to 3
minutes this setting can be changed however if you are unable to download
the image more than likly the reason is that the image is unavailable
because of the time. I have noticed that some of the sites might be late in
uploading the image. If that happens WebUpdateWX should try downloading the
radar image 20 minutes later. This image will match the time stamp.

I'm contemplating swithing from APRSPoint to UI View using Precision
Mapping. Can anyone tell me if any of the large retailers carry Precision
Mapping Traveler software on the shelf? I've got little time to wait on
mail-order and want to get familiar with it quickly.
Thanks,
Bob

GM I believe is starting to install Motorolla G18 GSM/GPRS modules. Or at
least that is what the local Motorolla GPS and GSM module supplier told me
a couple of months back.

Here is a great Programmer project for a Path Policeman that gives
feedback to USERS without congesting RF: Lets call it PATHcop:
1) PATHcop monitors APRS-IS...
2) PATHcop SYSOP sets HOP threshold at X (lets say 7)...
3) Every 5 mins PATHcop captures the next position packet that:
a) has a path greater than or equal to X -AND-
b) which has an email address in it
4) It sends a pleasant "did you really mean to use X hops?" email with
a link to a web site extoling the virtues of shorter paths...
5) Sleeps for 5 minutes. Then returns to #1...
6) It keeps a list and does not repeat to the same person for more than
a few days.
We have got to do something to educate these users with very long paths
that are tkaing more than their share of the network...

What has The BEACONet Project's PropNET system caught lately? How about a
2-meter opening in progress tonight? :) The newly emerging 2m PropNET
network has caught an enhancement under way. The hyperlink below will take
you to a 230kb screen shot as seen from my location.
http://www.rochesterny.org/BEACONet/propnet/propnetImages/20030825.jpg
The PropNET network is different than APRS in that most participants LURK,
allowing the channel to be used by Hubs (digipeaters w/high power and at
altitude) to chart DX.
The hyperlink will show a 300km+ hop from Albany NY to Western NY.
We are activly searching for other sites to host hubs. Co-location with
existing APRS digipeaters works fine as PropNET is on 147.585 and can share
an antenna with the use of a repeater duplexer (commonly available).

How many connections / servers running this would you want? A deluge of
email may or may not have the effect you want :)
>2) PATHcop SYSOP sets HOP threshold at X (lets say 7)...
One of the things I'm also looking at is distance from where the packet
was gated to the IS system from. Ie, I know what igates are tied into my
system. Thus, if those igates hear packets that are X distance from their
position then it logs them for a "wall of shame" or path of shame. The
problem is that it won't account for band opening (such as the apparent
one we had last night and the one we're appparently having tonight).
However, by looking at the UNPROTO path we can easily determine whether or
not is a case of 2WIDE.

Presumably it could also fire a query against QRZ. Running on a unix
based system it would be easy to do a wget (or some sort of perl module)
and then look for the "mailto" link.

Right. Unfortunately with the Shelby NC hamfest and the VHF contest my
time is going to be limited for the next couple of weeks. That and I'm
trying to redesign the Nashvilleaprs.net website, gotta keep up with the
Jones's over there at Tri-States. ;)
