MapSource and Delorme TopoUSA 4.0 and 5.0 for starters. I like to use
MapSource and TopoUSA4.0. I find that both are adequate, most of the time.
MapSource works correctly with the Garmin Gps unit and I am not sure Delorme
does, even if they say it does or is not as user friendly.
MapSource works really good with Garmin products and is the map that can be
uploaded and downloaded into
their units...Rino's, V's, etc. If something were to happen, I'd like to
see it happen with MapSource because it's actually usable in the field.
Delorme and the others are not......with the possible exception of using
them with a PDA.....which I have not seen...yet.
Licensing would be extreme...more than likely.

Hmmm... last I checked xastir did 125 +/- map formats, and does address
lookups on the maps (not always perfect, but as good as Eagle Geocoding
is).

One thing I like about UI-View is that when you choose to track a station,
by right clicking on it, UI-VIEW chooses the highest res map available.
This is cool, I have the local street maps on cd, which I spent many hours
copy paste calibrate, but in the end I can tell which side of the street
the object is.

I was looking at a Rugged PDA that I was thinking about using for APRS in
the field. The PDA has a built-in 802.11b and Bluetooth transceivers and
can add a GPS onto it. Now, when I'm around 802.11b WAPs, I should be able
to access the APRS-IS via these. What I would like to do is create a
gateway using a D700 and a WAP for field use. Without having an actual
computer to interface between the WAP and D700, how is this possible? Can I
build a "box" to interface these? I want a full gateway between 144.390MHz
at 2.4GHz. How can I do this?

Subject: findu2 remaining funds and Jeff Kings post

I just got in from working a bike ride today and was made aware of the posts
to Fridays list. I am checking into why the person who said he would be the
sysop for findu backup has not lived up to Steve's requirements. I can not
speak for Clint nor will I assume to do so. Given it is a holiday weekend,
I can not promise when I will have an answer. Dell that was purchased for
the backup did suffer from a hardware failure. This happened late March.
The SCSI bus died. A new mother board was required. This was taken care of
under warranty. The repairs were completed and blessed on April 8th. Clint
and Steve exchanged email during April concerning the rebuild of the server.
After April 13th, I was no longer in the loop. Why it is not online now, I
do not know. I am not a programmer, never claimed to be. I have not worked
for the company that is donating the rack space and connectivity since June
of 2003. I was laid off along with 2 others in June 2003.
Concerning Jeff's post about the left over funds. I made the request in
last year about interest in sending some of that money to aprsworld. I made
the request based on Jeff King's suggestion. The very few responses I got
back stated that they felt the money collected for findu2 should stay with
findu2. I did not see any other requests do repeat the effort. I do not
deny that the requests may have occurred, but I no longer watch this list
closely due to the fighting and other personal life requirements. I look at
it in digest mode and that is when I have time. Life happens and this is
suppose to be a hobby.
I am still amazed that we collected the amount of money we did. I apologize
for it not going smoothly. If it works out for the best that findu2 be
moved to a different location, then maybe that should happen. Please
remember this, Itel-Tigerbyte was the only company with the bandwidth and
personnel that volunteered for the job. I heard from maybe 2 or 3 people
volunteering to assist in the time this has occurred. Donations started to
be collected before we had anyone volunteer.
I make two suggestions.
1.) If someone meeting Steve Dimses APPROVAL is willing to do the
maintained and upgrades via remote access, I will make sure Clint Miller
gives the access needed. Talk to Steve Dimse about this, not me. If he
approves of that person, then we can move forward.
or
2.) If someone is willing to step up with bandwidth, time, access and the
background that Steve Dimse APPROVES of, I will make sure that the findu2
server, a money order with the remaining funds, a full record of who donated
how much to the project, and how the funds were spent, sent to that person
or group. Shipping costs for findu2 will come from the remaining funds.

Pretty easy really, just have a TNC listening on 144.390 MHz
The output of the TNC (serial) goes into VB6 or perl, and then you can
direct the traffic to where ever you want.
I have toyed with the idea of using GPRS for aprs.
VK2TDS has done lotsa GPRS tracking stuff

I'm running an IGATE using APRSD version 2.2.5-15 under RedHat 8.0 on a
AMDK5 with 16MB of RAM (No X-Windows of course !). My TNC is a KPC-3+
running F/W 8.3
For some reason ARPSD is "Aborting".
It seems to happen on two occasions.
1. Shortly after I disconnect my Xastir client.
2. When it tries to gate a WX message to RF (is the packet too long ?).
Any ideas ?
Thanks.

Howdy,
I have rigged up a talking APRS weather station. What it does is grab the
weather data from the aprs stream and talks it to a radio.
Here is the perl code - the lpt port is used to tx the radio, festival is
used to talk
#!/usr/bin/perl
use Net::Telnet;
my $host = "second.aprs.net.au";
my $user = "";
my $password = "";
my $prompt = "";
my (@data, $line);
my $t = new Net::Telnet(Timeout=> '5', port => '10153');
$t->errmode('return');
$t->Net::Telnet::open($host);
sleep 5;
while (<$t>)
{
if (m/WX Arana Hills {UIV32}/)
{
print;
@data = split(/\//);
$wind_dir = substr ($data[2],0,3);
$wind_spd = substr ($data[2],4,3);
print $wind_dir;
system ("/maint/scripts/lptout 1");
sleep 2;
system ("echo wind is $wind_dir degrees $wind_spd knots | festival --tts");
system ("/maint/scripts/lptout 0");
}
}
$statement_handler->finish;
$t->close();
