APRStraffic now has a WEB page with screen shots showing what the
traffic-monitoring Speed-Posts look like:

 http://web.usna.navy.mil/~bruninga/aprs/traffic.html

Its been running a few days and is fun to watch...

If APRS gas prices doesn't pertain to APRS, then why the VIAGRA post?

Just my humble opinion.

I did some experiements with a sony digital voice recorder last night

1200 Baud packet - no go
300 Baud packet - no prob
MSK - no prob
PSK31 - Excellent copy
SSTV - lossy picture
RTTY - no prob.

More on APRS Traffic Speed-Posts:

I just found the LIVE Maryland TRAFFIC speed data on the web and added a
link to it at the bottom of my TRAFFIC page. I even wrote a quick parser
that successfuly grabs the location and SPEED for each sensor. But that is
as far as I can go, since I can't write code for live internet reading and
interface it to my APRStfc.EXE... bummer...

But someone could write it into any internet capable APRS software and let
it then check the SPEED page and if there are any low-speed choke points
near that client, then that user puts out a LOCAL object...

Wow, what a neat project...

Try increasing the sample rate and 1200 baud packet should work. Also make
sure the sample is not overdriven/clipping (which sadly is the norm on
APRS).

Howdy,

I have a ICOM 706 MKii which I am using AGWPE and the rig in VOX mode.

Should I have an isolation transformer between the sound card and the rig ?

You are going to get many replies telling you that you NEED isolation
transformers... I am not one of those!

I personally have a problem with VOX operation. I hear too many stations...
playing games, the Windows startup noise, and that nasty "you've got mail"
noise.

I use a very simple interface between my SoundBlaster (audio card) and my
IC-706mk2G and/or my IC-703 with equal success.

I built a voltage divider for the TX audio line using a 100:10 ratio
(100K/10K), the RX audio is direct from the XCVR.

I use the 13 pin miniDIN jack so I get fixed values.

For the PTT control, I anded the DTR/CTS lines via a 1N4148 on each line to
a 10K resistor then to a 2N2222A. I also put a 1N4148 across the C/E
junction to protect the transistor. E to GND, C to PTT. Like I said --
SIMPLE, any GP NPN would work... I also like MPSA13's if I do not get enough
voltage to trigger the transistor to an "on" state :)

The 2N2222A, three 1N4148's, and voltage divider (1/8w resistors) all fit on
the back of the DB9 that plugs into the serial port on the laptop or
desktop, with my audio leads exiting the DB9 hood to the soundcard. The
other end of the cable has the 13pin miniDIN plug.

I have also tested this setup using a Belkin USB > SERIAL adapter.

I happen to have some shielded 4pair flat silver satin wire left over from
my job, so I like using this stuff, but I would guess that any CAT5 cable
would offer the same shielding.

I have used this same setup on my FT-817 before I sold it in favor of the
IC-703, used it on my old TS-440SAT, use it on my current primary station
IC-706mk2G and my manpack/portable station, IC-703.

I get consistant good reports, I have never had a problem.

I am sure that others milage may very, and that some consider me insane for
not spending money for transformers or ripping a modem apart for
transformers when I do not have to.

I do own a RIGblaster M8 and a NoMic for testing... I am considering selling
them since I do not need them.
