Wow. This is amazing. I cant believe what im reading. Ham radio hacks have
in the past been about making cheap junk work, I agree full stop. However
before that, Amateurs were about Innovative ideas and coming up with
solutions to complex problems.
I try to also be one of the more innovative hams. I tend to have to build
things myself because ham radio have sank into a disgustingly backward
slump without any new innovation or ideas.
Im not trying to put anyone down but my gosh, this 8088-66Mhz crown is
really putting the brakes on technology. Its like and power station not
offering electricity because a few people don't have power lines yet. I
believe in innovation through integration, over cheap effectiveness when it
comes to new prototypes or ideas. No im not rich., but I do try to provide
useful technology and ideas out of my hobby and I believe there are several
thousand others just like me at AmSAT UK, Germany, and North America.
Support newer technologies and stop slow poke hams from holding back the
hobby. if we look forward we will all move forward, we might even come up
with some new ideas that may help gain the hobby some respect again.
Finally, I am a Ham Hacker and i do have some disposable income. Who says
these two cant be one in the same.

Sorry, didnt mean it to sound critical. But some APRS clones seem to focus
too much on the internet and are not as easy to use as-is in the field for
rapid real-time situations on RF when most operators are come-as-you-are...
Here are some examples of problems we had with some popular software we
tried to use before going back to APRSdos...
0) Would not run on older plentiful laptops, nor be loaded in minutes on
available PC's.
1) Did not do decaying algorighm so that new data is rapidly disseminated
and old data takes up less air time. (THink of this as SMART beaconing for
MESSAGES and OBJECTS)
2) Had FIXED rates which require constant juggling for each situation by a
knowledgible guru changing setups (not come-as-U-are and usable in all
situations as is).... Improper setups KILL the network until a guru drives
out to fix it.
3) Messages to ALL did not go to the "mine" list and users were not even
alerted to important messages to ALL. Same for Bulletins. Users were not
alerted that a new bulletin had arrived and reminded that they must read
it.
4) When RANGE was set to X miles, and a station is heard on RF that has no
posit, it was ignored.! MESSAGES, STATUS and OBJECTS heard on RF from a
station without a known posit SHOULD still be captured... until known to be
out of range...
5) PHG circles were not available for visualizing the relative coverage
range of stations. This is a fundamental function of APRS.
6) Velocity vectors were linear instead of logirithimic. Thus for walkers
they didnt even show up, and for aircraft they cover the whole map.
APRS vectors should be a minimum length (Always visible) even if speed
is zero. Then logarithmic up to about 2 inches or so for a 600 MPH
aircraft
7) Mobiles and objects did not automatically dead-reckon (that is, keep
moving between updates)
8) No obvious clues to the age and latency of objects and stations
(elapsed time since last update) to the casual observer
9) Symbols for moving vehicles like the numbered Airplane, car, and boat do
not point in the direction of travel! Fixed pointing ICONS are very
confusing to 1st time viewers...
10) Stations and OBJECTS were treated differently. Thus the Netcontrol nor
anyone else could assume tracking for a "station" that has lost its
radio... In APRS there is -no-distinction- between stations and
objects. If a station is wrongly reported for whatever reason, anyone
with better information should be able to take over reporting of it..
(until it resumes reporting)
11) Couldn't zoom fixed maps.
a) one should be able to zoom up beyond the borders of a
fixed map to check activity in surrounding areas
b) one should be able to zoom in on a fixed map to resolve
lots of stations all clustered into one area...
12) No smart ACKING? Smart ACKIng includes
1) a Delayed 30 second follow-up ack,
2) Timing based on the number of digipeaters
3) reply-acks included in line numbers...
13) ZIP-LAN not implemented. Could only receive on a ZIPcord LAN. ( Would
not send 3rd party format over the serial port so it could share the
single TNC at headquarters.)
Granted most of these have NO impact on people just sitting in their
basements watching the internet or non real-time grass growing. But in the
field as displays to new users and casual observers, these represent a
significant loss of APRS capability.

The HTX-202 works great. I use them for Solar Powered WX Digis here in SE
NH. The power consumption is low, gives out 5 watts on high, no software
on/off, and they're cheap!
If you're only sending out WX reports, then a rig w/power save is fine. It
will wake up on TX and go back to sleep when done....unless it's atop a
hill site where it hears many stations, then it will never go to sleep.
I run KPC-3, HTX-202, Peet Bros U-500 all on solar power. One 32 watt panel
and an old car battery. I have used a 35 Ahr gell cell too!
Typically these ol' RS HTX-202 go for $75 at flea markets.

What ever became of PMmap that John Blowski wrote? It was identical in
function to dos aprs, used PM maps and used KISS mode tnc only.
