As I remember, most balloons I've seen had wiki baskets that people rode in.
Oh, that's wicker....

Nevermind.

No advantage I see, as the b2v.aprsca.net site will do the same. The only
thing I have not quite figured out yet is the mileage table. The official
site also uses full-color street-level scale maps. Nonetheless thank you
for your support of the race!

We seem to be having a nice 2 meter opening this morning, check this out:

That's 1232 miles for 6 hops. Not too bad!

Not quite, there is more that must occur in loading the javAPRS page...you
must download the javAPRS application, the checkpoint file, the tiger
server must create and send the map file, your computer must start the java
virtual machine, and connect to the data server.

On a fast Univeristy connection, the map appears 15 seconds after the page
loads, in another 5 seconds the stations appear. On a slow dial-up
connection it would take even longer. Of course, after the first time it is
faster as the applet and some other things load from cache.

>The only thing I have not quite figured out yet is the mileage table.

By knowing where the checkpoints are, findU can place a team on the correct
leg, and estimate the distances between team and the two checkpoints, it is
linear between the checkpoints, so it does not take into account the twists
of the mountain road (my requests for a more complete set of points, as I
used for the Mississippi River Challenge, have not been answered), it is
not perfect, but is can at a glance show where all the teams are. That can
be hard to do from the map, as there are so many trackers there that any
scale which can show the full course is jammed up with overlapping
trackers, you need to zoom in and follow the course to see all the
positions.

>The official site also uses full-color street-level scale maps.

Actually the use of tigermaps would be of concern to me, especially if you
get big loads. The tiger server can take 15 seconds or more during peak
periods to produce a map. The event occurs on weekends, so there will
probably be light loading outside of your application, hopefully you will
be OK.

As to street level maps, one of the things I've come to realize is that Bob
is right about simplier maps being better for APRS (at least for some
uses). The purpose of an APRS map is to provide context for position
reports. In this particular case, the context is the course and the
checkpoints. In my opinion, anything more distracts people from the
essential information. In the case of the TIGER maps, I have no idea what
the pink areas are supposed to convey, I'm guessing the greens are parks
and the yellows are incorporated areas, but none of that information
enhances my understanding of where someone is.

This situation is different than a person driving through a city, in this
case the street level maps can be of considerable help in providing
orientation.

I'm not trying to cut down javAPRS (I created it after all ;-) or your
page, just pointing out that there are some advantages (and as I stated in
the original post, a disadvantage) to findU. People should pick the one
that works best for them. No matter how you watch, this is one of the best
APRS events of the year, everyone should take a look, it is very cool, my
congrats to the guys that pull this off so well every year!

Yeah, great. 184 stations heard within the last 2 hours at my location
near Dallas. Don't you just love those TRACE7-7's. Really helps those
of us who try to use APRS for local operations.

I added WIKIServer to my web site.

There is a Balloon Event page started as well as an APRS event page started.
I am not a wiz at web pages but these pages allow a vistor to edit the pages
to add their events, etc.
Hopefully, the Ballon people will use it to add balloon events from all
over, so that when there is an event, people can have a one stop location to
find out. Same goes for APRS events.
If it's used, I'll stick it on a real server!

Enjoy!

Not related....but was thinking about it...

In the last 3 days, 14 hours, 50 minutes Firenet has processed 5,746,001
packets!

Just to give you an idea of how many packets are flying by!
