The Radio Shack Digitraveler is quite useful for this. It is easy to hack
and put into tracker projects. If you can find any around, pick them up.
They were being closed out last summer for $29. Check out my posts and
pictures of the hack on the yahoo group Kenwood_TH-D7.

I have heard of many people hacking the DeLorme Earthmate, but I've not
done this myself.

The Sky Diamond 6 solar tetroon flight has been postponed due to
unfavourable weather conditions. We hope to have the flight sometime next
week.

Yes, there is. If you put the TH-D7 in APRS mode and upload the following
text then Bob will get a message (use Hyperterm in 9600 baud 8 bits no
parity and enable local echo and attach line-ends to see what you are typing):

AMSG 00,WB4APR,Hello Bob how are you?

Note: use 00 for this, the use of

AMSG 01

will give you the contents of the message stored at slot #1. The number can
be 01 to 16 for the TH-D7 to read out all 16 message slots.

The problem is that with sending messages this way, the message is send as
one block of data, not interactive and you can't see what you are typing.

A skilled PIC programmer should be able to do something with this under the
following conditions:

- Require the use of a memory channel for APRS.
- Let the TH-D7 show the memory name for that channel

The program could assemble an AMSG string and show interactive feedback to
the user of the typed characters using the "MNA" command by changing the
memory name. I guess this will also work with the TMD700 and even the
TS2000. For the TH-D7 you can still use the SMC-34 additional mike
alongside the keyboard.

Alternatively add a display to the keyboard interface, but that spoils it a
bit, the TH-D7 already has a display. If you program both channels A and B
as memory channels you can even have two lines to play with...

One problem is that responses are queued in the TH-D7, reading them out via
the serial line doesn't clear the message icon on the screen. When all 16
message slots are full the TH-D7 starts to reject messages. The only way I
know to clear that is to push MSG on the keypad and go to LIST. I guess you
have to do that anyway to read the responses to your messages...

Leftover is a brave sole to build this neat interface, count me in as beta
tester...

Kind regards,

Henk.

I'm trying to create Satellite objects on my Xastir system, but this
packet won't parse. Other than the fact that it's a couple of days old.
