Hello Dave,
I road the bike to work the other day and was showing off how the tracker
works, net, etc. etc. and when we checked the air photo, nobody could
recognize any land marks??? Turns out the photo was dated May '94

BalloonSat VI Launch Announcement!
An APRS equipped balloon is planned for launch this morning.
Who:
University of Alabama Students - (University of Alabama - Huntsville)
What:
BalloonSat VI (last few balloons ~110,000 feet elevation)
APRS on 144.39 MHz (KI4DWY-1) using vertical antenna at .5W.
144.34 FM low power beacon
When:
Saturday - April 10, 2004 at approximately 10:30am.
This is the anticipated launch time. Times may/will vary to resolve
pre-flight issues. There is a remote chance that rain shower could delay
or cancel the launch possibilities this morning. Any updates will be
broadcast as APRS bulletins from the launch site.
Where:
Huntsville, Alabama
National Space Science and Technology Center
NSSTC is near UAH in Huntsville, Alabama off of Sparkman Drive across
from the UAH campus. Just follow the congregation of APRS tracking mobiles.
Launch Site lat/lon:
34 43.48
86 38.78
Where they could land:
Today's landing site is extremely dependent on many factors. Since this is
a test for the communications payload, it is likely that a cut down command
will be issued at 50,000 feet to limit the distanced traveled. The balloon
is not expected to rise higher because this is mainly a test for the
communication package to demonstrate the package will respond to commands
from the ground control team.
However it could land east of Scottsboro or Ider, AL.
Since these weather balloons can reach altitudes over 100,00 feet the line
of site radio range could be over 450 miles in all directions. However,
today's travel is very dependent upon issuance of a cut down command from
the ground team. Thus, the altitude is not expected to rise above 50,000 -
60,000 feet since it will be controlled.
You may want to listen for a direct radio signal from the balloon payload
to see if you can hear it directly. Any reports of direct reception are
welcomed to see how far the signal propagates via direct radio signal.
How to track the balloons on the Internet without APRS software:

In an upcoming Simulated Emergency Test (SET) I will be setting up an APRS
tracking display at the Command Center. I am relatively green to this type
of operation, and I need advice on setting paths and other elements of APRS
in the communications plan.
The scenario assumes that the existing APRS infrastructure sill be
available and functioning normally. The infrastructure includes multiple
WIDE digis located around the periphery of the area to be covered. I plan
to set up a RELAY digi at the CC for the purpose of tracking specific
participating mobile units in the region. The RELAY will be near the
center of the region defined by the WIDE digis. I want to be able to track
and display ONLY the participating mobile units, and ignore the routine
APRS traffic throughout the area of interest. The mobile units may readily
be outside the area of coverage of the RELAY digi, but within range of one
or more WIDEs, and will need to use the existing infrastructure. I cannot
change the existing parameters of the WIDEs.
I will be using UI-View32 (ver 1.99) with either a MFJ-1274 or MFJ-1278B
TNC. I need advice about what BEACON, PATH, and UNPROTO settings (for both
the RELAY and for MOBILE units) will best accomplish this purpose.
I receive this list via digest, so a CC: reply to <callsign> at arrl.net in
addition to the list will be appreciated. Thanks.

One way that I have found is to go to maps.msn.com --
Type in the address that you are desiring and when msn brings up the map,
the GPS coordinates will be in the URL line. Here is an example:
http://maps.msn.com/(zcbkbabtfuncwyyefm121q55)/map.aspx?L=USA&C=37.61465%2c-77.2
3914&A=7.16667&P=|37.61465%2c-77.39214|1|Tangle+Pond+Ln%2c+Mechanicsville%2c+VA3
+2111|L1|
Can you find the coordinates of this address?
37.61465 and -77.39214
Does this help?

From time to time there has been info here on weather stations. I am
thinking of setting up a Vantage Pro weather station for use on aprs.
I can't seem to find out whether or not the console can be directly
connected to the computer without the dataloger. Would appreciate you
Davis people letting me know.

Kurt,
Tnx for the reply, but I already have weather display and I don't want
to interface it with a tnc, just the computer to geneate the wxnow.txt
for use with ui-view.
