Has anyone hooked up an Icom IC-2720 to a Kantronics 3(+) TNC? I'm having
trouble getting it to work.
Thanks,
Don

That is one definition. What other people do is differentiate between Free
Source, and Open Source. I have opened the source, but I have not made it
free. The Open Source Initiative has their definition of Open Source. I have
my definition of Open Source. It is left up to the reader to decide who is
correct. Many programmers differentiate between Free Source and Open Source.
Under this definition most of the source code on ftp.tapr.org is not Open
Source. But I would argue that most of the people feel that most of the
software there is Open Source. Much of it dates from before the Open Source
Initiative definition anyway :-)

On a similar vein, I object strongly to GNU/Linux. Why should GNU add their
name to Linux just because some of their utilities are used with it. If I
write a program (such as a compiler) that is included with most distros,
does this mean I get to call it VK2TDS/Linux?

In this months CQ there is an article on the Wi-SYS 7110 APRS Location
Beacon. A GPS/TNC combo would be the best to describe it. Has anyone seen or
used one of these? At $xxx.xx seems like a good deal. Mfg website is at
www.wi-sys.com

If $xxx for a transmit-only tracker is a good deal, I think I need to
re-evaluate my pricing structure. =] Admittedly, they've got a very
professional looking package. But an OpenTracker or TinyTrak3 will cost you
about $30, and a GPS module $60 or so. With the exception of 9600 baud
transmit, I don't see any major difference in features.
My next project's going to look a lot more like this thing. One of my main
constraints, though, is board size - to keep the cost per board down I
really need to constrain the PCB dimensions to fit the PCB house's panels.
Right now I'm working with a 3.9" by 3.15" board, which pretty much rules
out stuff like the reconfigurable jumpers. There's just no room.
Interestingly, I just came up with the same layout with the RJ45's on front
and back. Mine's got the serial ports on back, though. Still not sure
about including a 6-pin DIN.
I think I'll follow this message with a new thread to get an idea of what
people would like to see from a new, open source tracker.
Scott
