But I can't, it is bedtime...I do have the cutting cgi working, but it
doesn't grab maps if an edge is within the displayed area:

http://mm.aprs.net/toporama.cgi?lat=44.53817&lon=-79.67067

This will return a geo file, with the image temporarily saved to disk, and
can then be used by a geo compatible program, like plot.cgi:

http://findu.com/cgi-bin/plot.cgi?call=*&geo=http://mm.aprs.net/toporama.cgi?lat
=44.53817|lon=-79.67067

Still need to add scaling and grabbing parts from multiple images, but if
the edges line up the way I think they will, the end result will be a
seamless topo map of all of Canada...

But first, sleep...

I did read your message but did not take any note of its sender, only its

So my opinion is shallow is it ?
You consider it acceptable to voice your opinion that Steve is wrong but do
not think others should say they see nothing wrong in what was proposed.
It appears to me that you do not like anyone voicing an opinion that
differs from yours.
Maybe I'm a more trusting individual that you appear to be but I do not see
the hidden agendas and conspiracies that you obviously see.

It works with mine with no problems. Just make sure it's NMEA output at
4800 (or 9600 if you prefer).

The 50k mapset is up and running, specified by set=50 (there is always a
way to specify height and widthof the image, haven't mentioned it until
now, defailt is 640x480:

http://findu.com/cgi-bin/plot.cgi?call=*&geo=http://mm.aprs.net/toporama.cgi?set
=50|lat=44.59333|lon=-75.72933|width=800|height=600

I've also added the ability to center the map on a callsign, rather than
requiring a lat/lon:

http://findu.com/cgi-bin/plot.cgi?call=*&geo=http://mm.aprs.net/toporama.cgi?set
=50|call=ve3iwj

Nice how this digi is placed directly on top of the tower symbol on the topo
map, eh?

That will be it for the weekend, going to spend some time with the YL and
some friends, and forget computers exist for a while...

Just playing with it and found that it works great for my town:
et50|call=va3slt>

Dryden, ON which is about 100km south west of me doesn't get displayed
properly, I don't get any map image in either 50 or 250 scale:
et50|call=va3udp>
<http://findu.com/cgi-bin/plot.cgi?call=*&geo=http://mm.aprs.net/toporama.cgi?s=
et250|call=va3udp>

The map and geo files for this area are available, though:
am/b250k/05/052f.geo>

Regardless, I am impressed! Outstanding work!
Thanks,
Adi

OK, think that is fixed. Root cause was the stupid way they subdivide
grids, odd rows go left to right, even rows right to left, turned out all
my test cases were even...

Let me know of any other problems anyone finds...

Hi Laura:

Your reposted my private email to the APRSSIG? I was hoping this thing would
go away, hence the reason I e-mailed you privately for some clarifications.

On Sat, 21 Feb 2004 11:33:43 -0000, Laurie - g6isy wrote:

His original proposal/wording would have limited custom/self generated maps
just to use of "aprs.net", and even if that wasn't his intent, that is what
it said. His new wording/later revision now allows them to be used for any
APRS purpose, including outside of aprs.net. If you can't see the far better
value in the later wording I can't help you, but more then one person
involved with APRS GUI's has written me thanking me for bringing this up, not
that that was the reason I did it.

Do note, Steve also was openly soliciting comments, and that is exactly what
I did, regarding the wording. Sorry you didn't like it.

>>Are you and Steve in business or something to make money off other

>No.

Well, that is my mistake for being sarcastic in a private message. Honestly,
I see so much of this "hit and run' stuff on the reflector... one liner's,
where I would like to know what is really inside someone's head, but don't
want to belabor it on the reflector, that often this is the only way to get
these hit and run poster's to respond privately.

In your case, I judged you wrong, and apologize, since clearly I never
thought that, and the comment was made solely to ellicate a response from
you. I guess I got my wish. None-the-less, it does need to be stated for the
record, that you re-posted a private message to a public reflector.

>>Or is it you just didn't bother to read the message, but instead
>>just looked at the sender?

>I did read your message but did not take any note of its sender,

OK, well, see above. If you can't see the better value, and clearly language
for all of APRS in Steve's later proposal, I can't help you.

>>Help me out here, I am trying to understand these kind of shallow
>>"attaboy" responses.
>
>So my opinion is shallow is it ?

It certainly didn't have any supporting facts. I also voiced that to you in
private e-mail, and frankly if I had known you wanted to start this whole
thing up again on the reflector, I might have not even bothered.

>You consider it acceptable to voice your opinion that Steve is wrong

I think wrong is not the right word. I suggested a way that I thought would
help APRS more, that is, not restricting the custom generated maps to
APRS.NET but just making them public for all to use (and no, GPL has nothing
to do with this). The fact that, at worst, Steve took half the suggestion
(making them available to all APRS as a whole) I think at least validates my
point and made it worth bringing up.

>but do not think others should say
>they see nothing wrong in what was proposed.

I just asked why you didn't support Steve's later proposal, that is, to make
the custom generated maps available to APRS as a whole, as opposed to
APRS.NET. Your response is you agree equally with both, even though they are
considerably different meanings.

Don't confuse a blind "attaboy" with an opinion. There is a considerable
difference in the final wording. Now the submitted custom maps can be used by
any APRS GUI author and hosted locally on your computer. This is a major
contribution to APRS and Steve should be commended for it. The fact that you
or others that want to paint me in a bad light, is a cross I am willing to
bear, as the end result is worth it.

>It appears to me that
>you do not like anyone voicing an opinion that differs from yours.

You really didn't express an opinion, you just agreed with someone without
any supporting comments.

>Maybe I'm a more trusting individual that you appear to be but I do
>not see the hidden agendas and conspiracies that you obviously see.

Nothing is hidden at all here Laurie. I've been very clear with my opinions
and reasons behind them. The ability for someone to recreate a project in its
entirety, should there be a sole source failure ("hit by a bus"), is of great
value. After what happened with MapBlast, and the disruption this caused in
the APRS community, I would think this value would be self evident.

With the changes to the TOS that Steve made on the mapserver submission page,
I'm confident this now won't happen, and it also enhances the value of the
APRS GUI applications as well. A win-win in my eyes.

Now, if you still want to portray me as the Fox Mulder of APRS, then so be
it. I really think we should move on here, and if you have anything else to
say to me, reply to me in private e-mail (like I did to you in the one you
re-posted to the SIG).

Thanks

Jeff wb8wka
