Subject: Findu & map feature request

First off - my hats off to Steve, Jim, and whomever else has been involved in
getting the maps to work for the time being on findu. Outstanding work!

Jim -

Is it possible to add state boundaries to the overview maps (the third one
findu displays)?

Thanks!

Travis County (Austin) RACES did this with their ARCHES system. Paid
to put packet stations in area hospitals. Some of us here in Dallas
area are looking at 802.11x installations.

Nuff said. It's a production FTP server that got hammered 24x7x365 until
it was retired a month ago.

That's 3.5 years....

How long a box stays up depends a lot on what you are running on it. If
you run buggy software that doesn't release memory, segfaults and such
you will crash regardless of platform.

Anything can be argued, most things have been argued here at one time or
another!

I don't agree with that position, but there is really no point on arguing it
now, this is past history.

If you want something to argue, here's a current case:

http://www.canaprs.net/locate.php?stn=k4hg

The parser does not seem to work for me, but the point is the maps. Many
people have sent me this site as an example of where maps still work. It
turns out, if you look at the source of the web page, that these maps are
coming from a company called mytelus.

http://www.mytelus.com/maps/index.jsp

Now, on this web site, they have no terms of service that preculde
canaprs's use of mytelus. Yet the maps include a copyright notice from
MapQuest, and on mapquest.com there are very restrictive terms of service,
that clearly do prevent this use of their maps.

It would have taken me all of an hour to convert the entire findu.com site
to mytelus maps, but I chose not to, because I think that would very
clearly violate the intention of the copyright holder, and this is simply
an oversight by mytelus. It is certainly debatable though, the only way to
know for sure is to do it, get sued, and have a court settle the issue. No
Thanks!

On the other hand, findU's data is embedded within hundreds of other web
sites, and none has a business relationship with me. Many sites use a
method called cross-linking, where sites without any actual relationship,
exchange almost invisible links (usually single pixel images). This is done
in order to increase rankings within Google, though they have gotten
smarter about it, it is a continual war between the linkers and the
searchers. Many web sites embed data from other sites in their pages
without a business relationship, the courts have been split on the subject
of deep linking and framing, with some saying that a prohibition against it
in terms-of-service (and even after cease and desist notice) is not
enforcable. That is the reason companies with mapping sites are using
encrypted URLs for the maps. You can embed the map, but you have to take
their ads with it.

As to your specific question, I suspect they do know the engine isn't mine,
because I have gotten many requests over the years asking for the
documentation for the MapBlast links. (I told every one to figure it out
for themselves, it is pretty easy.)

>There's
>no way for the average user to tell where that map is coming from.

True, but for the average user, the whole internet is pure magic! If I get
another notice from someone saying my computer is infected by a Windows
virus because they got one with my return address on it, I'm going to
scream. Ignorance of the masses is not an argument I see as being
pertinent.

Subject: Weather Station Question

Hi All
Is there a way to send APRS Weather formated packets with out using a PC.

The reason I ask is I have a friend that wants to set up a solar powered
APRS weather station and does not want to use a PC if he does not have to.

Let us hope we never witness the "Silence Of The Hams"

Was that for a BNC or SMA connector??

For SMA. ANd it was too small. I think my next build will use the pin out
of a standard DB-25 and then FILE it down to fit the SMA. The important
thing is that I don't want to possible stretch my SMA at all. Today I
used that antenna standing on a street corner to make an autopatch when I
couldnt even bring up the repeater on the rubber duck.

You can use the Ultimeter weather stations which you can go directly to a
KPC-3+ or similar TNC and it will work! KF4OTN-4/6 is setup this way... No
computer.

Has anyone located the Onstar module in a Chevy 3/4 ton (or even a 1/2 ton)
4-door pickup with the current body style (the truck is around a 2001)?

Thanks and 73 - Matt

Hi Eric
Thank you for your quick response.
But I should have mentioned is that the Weather station in question
is a davis. Yes he does have the data module.

Here is the original question again but with davis included.

Hi All
Is there a way to send APRS Weather formated packets with
out using a PC using a Davis Weather station with the data module.

The reason I ask is I have a friend that wants to set up a solar
powered APRS weather station and does not want to use a PC if he does
not
have to.
