Strange. What are the 200 marine freqs? VHF?
As far as I know there are only 40 some odd. See the list at:
http://wireless.fcc.gov/marine/vhfchanl.html
There is only one of those that is digital - Channel 70 (156.52). You can
now buy a full coverage marine VHF HT which also includes channel
70, presumably with some sort of internal TNC. You even get a "call sign"
called a MMSI. See the details at http://www.boatus.com/mmsi/info.htm .
They are called "DSC ready" but the Coast Guard won't be listening until
sometime after 2005. The plan is to eventually eliminate the analog voice
Channel 16 as the call up & distress channel.
Interestingly, ch 70 is also authorized for general purpose calling &
public correspondence.
Want to have a go at it?

Tested, it doesn't work. Several receiving stations were tested against a
transmitter running 100 ms txd. All with squelch circuits lost the packets.
Too many radios running squelch circuits still. Not all of us are running
tncs capable of running open squelch. It's got to be 300 or more!
That's life.
So if you want to loose your connectivity to the APRS network, lower your
TXD.

Channel 70 will carry your "digital" call sign, GPS position, and water
depth if you add it all. That way you can contact boats in your area for
information and/or emergencies.

You know... It hit me as I was driving down the road today. Amateur Radio
has been praised by the Department of Homeland Security as being one of the
front liners... Well, they have been giving States and Counties lots of
monies to update their equipment to prepare for terrorism. Why can't we get
some money to update our stuff? I'm not talking about a million dollars so
every amateur involved in RACES (or ARES) can get a shiny new D700 and GPS
to use on APRS but some of the centralized equipment (i.e. servers and
software) might be able to get a helping hand. This might require a
National organization of some sort being the receiving (or asking) entity
but it would seem that with the monies being available to all these other
organizations we might be able get a little.
Just a thought.

No that's not life. That is people who are too lazy to make sure their
radios are optimized for packet radio. Sorry I can't sugar coat it for you,
but those are the facts Jack.
So, contact the people who have squelch set and educate them. Don't make
your network cater to the lowest common denominator since your make
everyone go to the lowest common denominator.
And while you at it, make sure their TX audio level is not tuned for
maximim smoke.

Call me old fashion, but I don't think a little technical excellence is too
much to expect from people that have studied for a amateur radio license.

I think my old StarTac probably had about 100 yards cumulative kicking
distance on it by the time I had to replace it!

SAR is definitely one of the areas we need to push if we're trying to get
corporate support. It takes work, though. Our SAR team is doing much
better now that we've got people dedicated to going after grants and
donations. The local Indian casino just donated a nice new vehicle. I
really think that if they were approached right, at least one of the mapping
companies would be willing to work something out.

Was this ever the case? I thought vicinity.com's terms of service pretty
clearly prohibited what findU was doing, at least as of a year or so ago
when I first checked.

Just to nitpick, isn't PL a Motorola trademark? Though CTCSSEASY doesn't

For the first two years there were no terms of service, when they placed
them up they allowed everything findU did except the track cgi, which took
the image and then modified and retransmitted it. Otherwise, all that findU
was doing was deep linking, and the terms of service did not prohibit that
(unlike the TOS on expedia now).

Regardless of who's making the actual HTTP request, I think it could be
argued that findU's mapping interface as a whole constitutes a 'derivative
work.'
You specifically state on your front page that you're not releasing your
source code because people have approached you about commercializing it. Do
they understand that the map engine isn't yours? When I go to KFC's store
locator and see a Mapquest branded map, I (rightfully) assume that it's
because KFC has a legitimate business relationship with Mapquest. There's
no way for the average user to tell where that map is coming from.
