Hi all,
I'm running a Windows 98, WINAPRS 2.7.2 through an AEA PakRatt and a
Peet Bros. Ultimeter 2000. Frequently it indicates gusts of 10 MPH even
when the sustained wind speed is higher. If you've ever spent a winter
in Wyoming, you know that gusts of 60 are more the rule. The raw packet
indicates the 10 MPH gusts. Any suggestions?
Also, if I forget to reboot the computer at least once a week, the
system crashes. I'm wondering if Linux would do a better job for hands
off operation. What Linux version and Xastir (or whatever) seems to be
the most robust?
Thanks & 73,
Steve

Microsoft does have .NET version of the MapPoint service. It provides a Web
Services (XML/SOAP/WSDL) interface to their mapping data.
Surprisingly, some of the demo programs they offer are written using Java
and Perl.
I wonder if anyone "with stature" has proposed anything to Microsoft about
supporting the Amateur Radio Community.
It could be good PR are for them, and give them a pretty cool application
to demo to potential customers.
I mentioned it to Steve, but I'm sure he is buried under e-mail.
They do provide a 30-day eval account.

IMHO, it will be very hard to beat Linux for reliability. I've had systems
go more than a year without a reboot. The reboots are normally because of
a failed UPS, or some sort of physical move of the PC.
Another choice would be Windows 2000 (or XP). You'll find these two far
more reliabile than Win98.

I'd suspect anything like this would be filtered through the Bill and
Melinda gates foundation. See:
http://www.gatesfoundation.org/AboutUs/LetterFromBillMelindaGates/default.htm
and it appears they do not accept unsolicited proposals, so you might need
a insider as you suggested.
It also appears Ham Radio (primarily rich old white men) are really not a
target market of this foundation. That is not to say APRS couldn't change,
but APRS and APRS like systems would need to expand beyond a ham only
audience IMHO.

It works if you use the same program running all the time for a dedicated
purpose. When you use it for other things they all crash. My XP is no more
reliable tha ME. although 95 was the worst. 3.11 was ok. I had Linux on
this machine for awhile and it still crashed if I was using my various ham
and mapping programs. Most of the people I have heard that say Linux is
more reliable have not tryed it, they just heard it from some one and are
repeating it. If I leave APRS on all the time it eventually crashes any
computer I have.
