Yes, we defined all this for APRS sometime ago including the formats
and they are on the list for implementation. It would sure ba awsome!

The Yeasu VX-2R tiny HT has a 30 deep channel memory for just such a
"local" list that it derives b y scanning all cahnnels in use. Now if
someone would just decode the CLONE serial port format I bet we could write
into those memories! de WB4APR

One of the big things we're hoping to do with OpenTRAC is to define a
repeater data element that'll provide that sort of information in a format
that can be used to automatically program a radio. Hopefully static
objects like that could be intelligently queued by the digi and transmitted
together in a block to limit bandwidth usage. A small external device
could probably program a D700, but the hope is that manufacturers would
build in support with new radios. You could drive into an unfamiliar area
and have a special bank of channels auto-programmed, showing repeater
callsign, frequencies, CTCSS tones, a short description, and maybe icons
showing things like autopatch, ARES/RACES mode, and so on. Even range and
bearing if your radio's got a GPS.

I think this would be an awesome feature to have on a radio. Beats hauling
around an outdated repeater guide and manually entering frequencies. So far
I've had no luck getting manufacturer input. Not that we necessarily have
to get it, but I'd rather have their input during the design phase to make
sure it addresses their needs. If anyone out there has contacts with these
people (in particular, Yaesu, Icom, Kenwood, and Alinco) please let me
know!

I don't know what causes it, but my Garmin GPS III has displayed that same
message on occasion when mobile with my D-700. It could be what Bob
described, or (I suppose) it could be something else.

Does anyone have an extra Power/Data Cable for a Garmin GPS-2+ that I can
buy? I somehow lost mine in the move from the Jeep to the Truck and want to
get my APRS back on board. I still have the cable that plugs into the D700.

Where are they defined? I can't recall seeing them in either the spec or
your erratta page.

This web page:
http://home.comcast.net/~sllewd/

Has info on the format used for the VX-5 and VX-1, which may lead you to
some VX-2 info. There is non-Yaesu VX5 and VX1 software available, which
generally works better than the "ADMS" series Yeasu sold. That may have
changed, as the ADMS is now an internal product for Yaesu, instead of being
a 3rd party arrangement.

I've used a VX-1 since they came out. Great for some appications - one is
in my kit as a test HT, with a Baycom modem and dos software. Makes testing
APRS digis, or other 1200 bps packet stuff, easy and compact.

Granted, this class of HT is not for many situations - low power, poor
antenna (it works on 144-146, but not much outside that range), tiny
speaker with low audio, etc. Not your first on-site disaster HT. But for
many uses, and as a "always carry" HT, which can scan stuff way outside the
amateur bands, it is very useful.

Bob - how does the VX-2 do on battery life? The VX-1 does great, and the LI
battery is the way to go. I now will not buy any HTs that don't have LI
batteries.

I see the error message on my Streetpilot III and GPS V. It appears
to be caused by my TinyTrack III. I just hit the enter button and move
on. As far as the local repeater freqs, I put the repeater info in the
KPC-3 Digi as a status.

I've noticed that you can query APRS stations, Weather stations,IGATE,
etc.... so why don't we just add a 'repeater query'. (Perhaps D700's
cannot do queries, I don't know as I don't own one).

For each local repeater, there could be ONE dedicated aprs station that can
respond to a repeater query.

If you want, you could then set your mobile to do a repeater query when
entering a new area... idealy, with a bit of hardware/firmwre, this could
then program your radio with local channels.

Subject: Very early prototype of APRS Map Manager
From: Steve Dimse <k4hg@tapr.org>
Date: Mon, 9 Feb 2004 15:35:18 -0500
X-Message-Number: 23

A rather productive two days, resulting in a (very early) protoype of the
proposed APRS Map Manager system being available. First, you can look at
the database structure and sample data set at

http://www.findu.com/mapping/db.txt

All that is in the test data are the south FL, US, and world APRSdos maps,
and three radars for FL (MIA, EYW, and TLH). The first thing working is the
user interface for the maps. Say you are looking for a map of Miami, you
could check for coverage this way:

http://aprsmm.aprs.net/cover.cgi?lat=26&lon=-80.5

You should see 5 maps come up, sorted by the approximate level of detail in
the map (in meters). Clicking on the file name will give you the map or geo
file, as appropriate, and clicking on the decription shows the map.

When Jim finishes the geo support we talked about the other day, APRSworld
will appear on all queries in the area of the US (with a low detail number,
indicating small details are visible) and for the entire world with a large
detail number. Adding this support takes two entries in the database. Any
dos map can be added to the database with a single entry, and new kind of
map (e.g. WinAPRS or palmAPRS) takes a single entry to tell the code how to
handle it. A new map type requires NO additional coding in the APRS MM
code, and once the entry is added to the APRS MM database, all applications
using APRS MM will automatically support them!

Still a huge amount of work to go, next up is getgeo.cgi which will repond
to a query with the single map that best matches what the user requests.

Again, a very simple demo, but imagine if every APRSdos, WinAPRS, palmAPRS,
image map, and so on were entered into the database...even at this
primative coding level, it would be very useful! I'm getting excited about
the possibilites...

If there is anyone that has mapdrawing code (or wants to write some) and is
interested in supporting this project please contact me. I would much
rather leave support of additional map types to others, it is not my forte,
and I can contribute more by concentrating on the infrastructure. It would
be nice to have someone beside the usual suspects get involved!

Even if no one steps forward, I will eventually support at least WinAPRS
and palmAPRS maps, maybe more, but it will take a long time for me to get
that done. Please, someone, help!

Even if you are not a programmer, you can help, I need librarians (so far
just one offer for the Carribean), and everyone can start collecting dos
maps for inclusion! No need to worry aboout other types yet, unless someone
comes up with some code...

Steve K4HG
