Was the findu weather radar dependent on vicinity.com too? I can't say that
I use findu.com often enough to know what its features and data sources
are.

I prefer a site called:

A variety of sources.

The US street level data is US Census TIGER data. Right now it is the 1998
dataset, but at some point I'll probably get and download new data.

NEXRAD imagery comes from the Iowa Enviromental Mesonet and possibly Gerry at
TAMU.edu soon.

Most of the other data is from a variety of sources. Mostly govermental
agencies and free GIS data dumps.

All of it is stored on my machines and under my control. The images are
rendered by my machines so they don't rely on other company.

Well, from the comments I get from my users, most seem to prefer the multiple
maps.

Not really, maybe I didn't make the idea clear. I'm not talking about a
single source of maps, I'm talking about a wide array of maps of varying
types. For example, let's say there are three "maps" in the system, Bob's
dosAPRS world map, which contains very little detail, but a general outline
of the world. Then there is a palmAPRS map of Paris, and finally, the
aprsworld map (which would essentially be represented as a single
nationwide street level map).

A request comes in for Philadelpha, it is served up by your code.

A request comes in for Paris, it is served from the palmAPRS map.

A request comes in for a map covering London...the only thing the server
knows about is the world map, so it serves part of that up (which of course
zoomed in at that level would be worthless.

Of course, the idea is the system has many more than 3 maps, and can pick a
decent coverage for any given area.

There is nothing wrong with the aprsworld maps, but they are a US only
solution. Yes, I know you have some data for the rest of the world, but
that is not adequate, any more than APRSdos maps are adequate over the US.
People expect more. Obtaining street level shapefiles over the entire world
is not a realistic possibility, given the budget of APRS, namely $0.

However, many areas have detailed maps in one of the APRS formats, and the
idea is to combine all of these into a single system. While it will never
be as pretty or complete as MapBlast was, it is the best solution I see for
our predicament, at least until an APRS users hits the lottery. If anyone
has a better solution, I'd love to hear it...

How about contacting the web mapping providers (Microsoft, Navtech,
Vicinity, et al) about donating their services? Amateur radio is by its
very nature non-commercial. Perhaps a provider could even get a tax break
by providing their services to a qualified non-profit organization? Or
maybe they'd be willing to provide access in exchange for a big sponsorship
banner. The New Economy ain't what it used to be, but eyeballs still count
for something.

I can answer that as far US symbols/signs, I deal with signs in my job from
time to time.

The sign/symbol for hospital is blue background with a white H.

If you should ever need to look up standard US road signs, here is the place,
the US federal Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices:

http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/kno-2003.htm
http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/pdfs/2003/pdf-index.htm

The exact file/page for the symbols used on signs like hospitals wheel chairs,
is here in PDF format:
http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/pdfs/2003/Ch2D.pdf go to page 23

These may give the authors some background when revising their icons.

Hellllp.

I have been tearing my hair out for a week or more trying to get UI-NWS to
play nice.

The problem is NOT UI-NWS, I'm pretty convinced of that, the problem is in
the feed from the Java filtered port on the servers, but I don't know how
to fix it.

Our local weather service is LOT in chicago. North of us is MKX in Milwaukee.

I CANNOT get NWS messages from these two locations from any server I've
tried. I can get NWS messages from everywhere else (it seems) but not these
two (and maybe a few others). I use the terminal screen/logging and Debug
logging to search for LOT or MKX and don't ever see anything from the
servers even though I see lots of other weather server messages.

I've tried every variation of filters I can think of. "t/n" b/LOT* nothing
works. (Tried b/LOT*,MKX*,ILX*,DVN* and didn't see any traffic from any of
the prefixes).

If someone igates the message out on RF, and I receive it, then UI-NWS
picks it up, no problem.

I have UI-View running on 3 different machines. Connected to different
servers, none of them see LOT messages.

Has ANYONE else ever seen a similar problem ? Does anyone have any ideas
for troubleshooting the problem?

We're having lots of weather events (snow, etc) so there's a lot of
advisory/watch/warning traffic. I just can't see it.

Extremely frustrated

I use p/FWD/SEC to get the Ft. Worth and Space weather. I would
recommend using p/LOT/MKX to get your areas. Make sure that the server
is understanding the command (look at the html status page at port
14501). I do not use UI-View so I can't tell you the exact format for
UI-View, but the server is looking for "filter p/LOT/MKX" without the
quotes.
