Thanks to all for the info on the 9612.

I think I have enough info to check the TNC out further.

Stephen,
In Ui-View, there are very slight color variations for some of the symbols
that could conflict with a background color. However, they are close enough
that one can easily figure that out. We had trouble with the ICP symbol and
a white background...so the white part of the symbol is a few shades off
white.

I just came across the Lassen SQ GPS receiver. Does anyone here have
experience with one of them <http://www.trimble.com/lassensq.html>? I am
curious about where to buy and what the cost...

That got me thinking. I've seen several threads about small transmitters
and radios here off and on. Did anyone ever find a small compact
synthesized RF package that puts out a Watt or two? Something reasonable
priced and suitable for a small portable APRS setup?

Email their sales address. They gave me the name of a regional supplier and
said that it's about $xx in single quantities. That doesn't include the
antenna. I have several sets of the little connectors they use to get
data/power in/out of the device. It was just free samples, but if you end
up playing with the SQ (I didn't get one, just almost did), I can send them
to you.

Been running the 'new' version of APRSDOS 861, after a long time, the path
"KA1GJU-3,NS1RA-1,WIDE2-2"is showing it's still current (hit the tab
button), but digi doesn't respond when xmited to. When going into terminal
mode using "Ops, Comm, Tnc" and hiting "U" for unproto, the TNC says APRS
"UNPROTO APR861", not my usual of "UNPROTO of APR861 VIA
KA1GJU-3,NS1RA-1,WIDE2-2".

Is there a bug in 861 or is it supposed to drop the path after hours of
unattended ops?

YES, that is why there is version 863 posted only a week later. It fixes
the PATH bug..

I'm advising someone on setting on an IGate that's going to be located at a
repeater site. The IGate setup is no problem for me, but I'm not sure about
the digipeater setup. If they're using the same TNC (a 9612, I think), will
it do its digipeating job while in KISS mode? If I was building such a
system myself, I'd just have digi_ned do that part, but that may not be what
they're going for.

Define "everywhere". Is the white 'H' on a light blue background a U.S.
symbol or an international symbol? Seems to me that a house of some kind
with a cross on it means hospital in more places than the symbol we use on
signs around here.

In Xastir we currently have a white building with a red cross on it.

That sounds a lot like our hospital symbol. Perhaps a lean-to with
space for an overlay character would suffice and get the "shelter"
point across?

Ours looks like this:

  NO
  SYM
  YET

Seems pretty descriptive.

Not unless the program using KISS know how to digipeat; i.e a
full-function APRS client like UI-View or APRSplus that can both I-gate
and digipeat at the same time...

Its an issue with APRSdos. I used to use the alternating path function
(which I believe was recently removed) and had to quit using it because
aprsdos would "loose" its path.

Try this: Set a path with the U command. Then do it again. Watch the bottom
of your screen where the paths are shown. Once in a while, the path isnt
there. Why? I suspect APRSdos remembers what it sees from the TNC. From my
experiments, it appears to be a timing issue where APRSdos sends a command
to the tnc to change or read the tnc, and doesnt get the data at the right
time (its been several years since I did this - my results are a bit fuzzy
in my mind). Since it doesnt see anything, it remembers "nothing". When I
looked at it last, I snooped the actual serial lines to see what APRSdos
was seeing/doing. Its not a tnc issue - I've tried MFJ1270, PACCOMM 5.0,
and KPC3, KPC3+ and KPC9612 and they all do this. It may be related to
APRSdos taking the tnc out of conversation mode to command mode where its
loosing it. If APRSdos did KISS, this never would be an issue.

My location on the FindU site shows me a couple miles from my true
coordinates. The following shows me near Fawn road but I live on 5th St in
downtown (village) Dresden.

http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?call=KC8BEW

I have checked it other sites and programs and I am shown at my correct
location. Just curious as to the position change.

BTW
I don't have it as bad as KC8TDS. It shows him in the middle of the
Atlantic and I know He doesn't like boats or planes.
