Laptop 5V USB power is regulated by internal power supply that is a
sync-buck from the battery. Thus, you can expect pretty stable 5V unless
the 5V gets loaded down by excessive current. Thus the 2 diode trick
could suffice. However, using the LM regulator or even a resistor and a
3V zener is not a bad idea.

VBG. My 30kV 0.003uF caps sit with straps on for that reason.

Very. do you have a web page?

Yes. That happens so seldom that I don't consider it a problem. Of course
the newbie setup error of making your house and your mobile(s) have the
same callsign/SSID makes things interesting.

Trying to determine whether a station is mobile based on icon (I mean
_symbol_ darn it!) is fundamentally flawed as well: You can't depend on a
user to set the symbol properly. People choose their symbol for all kinds
of reasons. I've found it an unreliable indicator. Setting a flag based
on more-than-one-position-heard has been a much more reliable indicator for
us.

Look up mobile and moving in the on-line dictionaries. The definitions of
interest are so close as to be nearly one and the same.

No, it is right now reviewing several things:
1) the proposed additional WAYPOINT symbol
2) the inconsistency in some programs with regard to the WHEELCHAIR symbol.
3) the proposal to add an OPERATOR ACTIVE bit
4) the proposal to add a PRIORITY bit

Wow, I move my station all the time. If I am at home, my WB4APR call is
there. If I am on travel at either of the two grammas, then my WB4APR
station is there.

If I am at work, and want to get APRS mail there, then I fire up there.

I repeat. The criteria for MOBILE as a "definition" is by the subset
of SYMBOL characters that I defined as "MOBILE". The determination of
wheter a station MOVED or not is simply that, a "MOVED" station and we
should be careful not to confuse the two... in any APRS client.

I appologize that until recently, I did not realize that other client
programs did not have the list of the "MOBILE" subset, because it never
made it into the spec... Here it is again...

Mobiles if any of these Primary symbols: '<=>0COPRSUXY[^abefgjkpsuv
Mobiles if any of these altrnte symbols: /0>AKS^nsuv
  Weather if any of these altrnte symbols: (*:<@BDEFGHIJTW_egptw{
Digis if symbol is #&I <== notice this includes HF and Igates too

Again, this is not a requirement, but it is a selection criteria when one
wants to view a "selection". I am not demanding the everyone use this
criteria, but I offer it to anyone that wants to have the same consistent
definition of what constitutes a "mobile" SYMBOL in APRS...

This is independent of MOVEment, past, or present. MOVEMENT is another
excellent selection criteria, but different. That is my only point.

I haven't seen any traffic on the spec list in ages. Is it still going?

I'm glad to see that you're still taking a lead role, Bob. A lot of
projects in the open source community (the Linux kernel, for one) have
demonstrated that it's important to have a single focal point. Left up to
committee, nothing would ever get done.

That's not to say I actually AGREE with your decisions, but it's better than
stagnation. =]
