Subject: Don't be too surprised

Hello Bob,

Don't be too surprised if you get a lot of messages from people
accusing you of sending them a virus... below is a log entry from
several attempts where an Australian IP tried to spoof your address to
send something to our addresses. This is consistant with a virus
that is scanning internet files found on the infected computer for
addresses to use, both as the fake "source" and as the target for
futher infection.

In any case, you can tell people that the real infected computer is
"down under"...

Yes, that would never work. My idea was to base it only on Keyboard or
mouse activity in the last 10 minutes (if enabled).

You are correct, thanks.

A word of caution about the Antenex NMO-mount GPS antennas. I have
experienced several times when the unit has simply stopped working,
apparently due to heat. My vehicle is black, and with the black puck up
there, under the Texas sun, it quickly became *hot* internally. Usually
hitting the freeway causing some good air movement across the antenna would
resurrect it. I had it replaced under warranty a couple of times and
experienced the same problems with all of the units.

Radiall/Larsen came out with a GPS NMO puck to compete with the Antenex
model. They shipped me a sample which seems to have no issues with heat -
it's been through at least one summer without a failure. It's also a bit
more streamlined in appearance. They would be my choice for an NMO mount
these days.

How do I get the Kenwood in the vehicle to take the GPS data and specify
lower case? or are we just considering base stations at this time,
assuming all mobiles are manned? Or maybe consider lower case to be the
"unattended" instead of upper case? That way my d700 and the magellan
gps have no qualms? Just a thought.

Depends on who's software you are using. APRSdos shows all digis as green
(except WIDE only) and with any overlay character from 0-9 and A to Z as
required by the spec. Some other programs don't...

Overlays are a very powerful feature of APRS that was not implemneted
fully in some popular client programs. The following ICONS can have 36
different overlay characters:

DIGIS, CARS, Trucks, Vans, Diamond(gates), Triangle, Boats, Circles,
Square, Civil Defense, ARES/RACES, and recently I proposed the WAYPOINT
ICON..

This can lead to CUSTOM/UNIQUE ICONS for almost 400 separate stations
withough having to clutter the map with callsigns...

I have had mine for over a year now and I have had NO problems at all with
the unit. I live in South Florida and my truck is outside all the time,
never in a overhang or garage, granted it is white and not black. Now my
GPS is another story, the GPS 3 mounted on the dash has suffered some LCD
problems and I am on a GPS 5 now. I am very lucky that the GPS is paid for
by my employer if not I would be very mad, there is no way to keep it cool
down here and still be visible, got to go on the dash itself.
