Curt,

This is GREAT info!! I wish I had seen it earlier.

Why is this data (or a link to it) not on the TAPR APRS site??

Wonder if any one has seen a HF/VHF/UHF transceiver which is computer
programmable has 200+ memories, scan VHF & UHF with PL/DPL, and of course
can be connected to a TNC for APRS. In other words a D700 with HF. The
radios I've seen lack scan, memory and computer programmable. Tnx.

The closest thing that I have seen is the new Kenwood HF radio. It does NOT
have the onboard TNC but will do all the rest of the stuff, I think.

I just looked on Kenwood.net but they don't have it up there, yet. It was
on the back cover of January 2004 QST I believe. Cool looking radio!

All,

I have downloaded version 1.2 of aprs-ce.exe (3.840KB Dated 1/1/03
12:00AM). I run this program and I get a install window with three
buttons, setup, cancel, about. I select cancel and it the program starts
extracting all kinds of files - but I can not find them anywhere on my hard
drive. I am extracting them on my desktop computer (no on my wince
device). What am I doing wrong?

My second question relates to using a pc with the Kenwood D700 to display
aprs stations using an aprs client. I have connected a computer running a
terminal program to my D700 and when it is in TNC APRS mode nothing is
received by the computer terminal. If I change to TNC PACKET mode then I
start seeing the aprs packets come across. So good so far, but I now
notice that the GPS indicator on the D700 is no longer flashing and I can
not figure out how the GPS data gets to the aprs client on the pc. I did
look through the D700 manuals and did not see the answer.

Thanks in advance to all who reply.

73,
Rick

Sorry for the delay but I got drawn into a friends problem. Your
suggestion is the info I wanted.

Thanks

The problem is that you apparently don't know how WinCE devices work.
The installer doesn't install anything to the main PC. It uses
Microsoft ActiveSync (the main utility used to communicate with Pocket
PC devices in order to transfer data and programs into them) to transfer
the install package into the pocket device where the setup then runs.

YOU MUST HAVE ACTIVESYNC WORKING CORRECTLY AND COMMUNICATING PROPERLY
WITH THE POCKET DEVICE BEFORE YOU EVEN ATTEMPT TO INSTALL APRSce.

If you don't have ActiveSync (it's a Windows add-on you need to download
from Microsoft) installed on your system, or don't have the pocket
device connected, the installer just unpacks a bunch of files to your
system TEMP directory, and then immediately erases them when it can't
find the pocket device online.

The Kenwood APRS radios have two distinctly different operating modes.

A) The "PACKET" mode acts just like a radio connected to a
traditional external TNC program. Everything received is sent out the
main serial port to a terminal or APRS program running on an external
computer.

B) The "APRS" mode activates what is essentially an internal terminal
program that uses the radio's front panel as a dot-matrix display
device. This terminal program creates a specialized APRS-aware "smart"
terminal capable of displaying APRS messages and position reports in
text form. It is also capable of automatically beaconing posits on
transmit, either from hand-entered lat/long or from a GPS receiver
attached to the special GPS port. All stand-alone with no external
device required.

The flashing GPS indicator is part of the BUILT-IN "APRS" functions of
the D700 and TH-D7. When you switch to "PACKET", the internal APRS
terminal program is shut down, including the GPS status monitor. If a
GPS receiver is connected to the special GPS port, the GPS data stream
is automatically echoed out the main DB9 serial port, interspersed
between lines of raw TNC receive data.

If you monitor the data stream with an ASCII terminal program,
periodically you will see a line of text and numbers beginning with
$PNTS or something similar. This is the echoed GPS data. External
(PC-based) APRS programs that explicitly support the D700 and TH-D7
know how to separate local GPS data from TNC received-data packets in
this mixed-data stream, based on this special header. [ Normally,
PC-based APRS clients would expect TNC and GPS data to be coming into
the computer on SEPARATE serial ports. ]

I just uploaded Wmaps31.zip to TAPR. (DOS maps)

Only change was adding a 32 mile map for Philmont Scout Reservation area
in Northeast New Mexico. I have no detail inside the reservation, but can
add it if someone will send me a paper map.
