Doesn't Afilter also do this or has it been obsoleted by javAPRSSrvr?

APRS PCsat Operations Note:
PCsat is now almost back to maximum eclipses but is holding well and fully
operational (in the Sun)..
She is most vulnerable in the dark. Please do not send any packets via
PCsat at night.
Responding to packets in the dark has a high probability of causing a reset
and this will lose the current parameters from which we cannot recover
until MAY 18th!
The good news is that during the northern hemisphere's afternoon passses,
she is in excellent shape with the sun directly on her best (+Z) panel.
Similarly, go easy on her in the morning when she is trying to recharge...

Is the 144.39 frequency specific to the United States? If so, are there
standardized frequencies in use elsewhere in the world? Also, is there a
map or diagram somewhere online that shows the global coverage of the APRS
network?
Thanks.

Subject: Topo Map Opinions Needed
From: Vince <heffer@mindspring.com>

Hi All,
Saw 'National Geographic Back Roads Explorer' in a local store and am
wondering if anyone has used the maps for APRS - in my case UI-VIEW. The
maps are limited to 1:100,000. I have Paint Shop Pro so making copies for
my own use is not a problem
Three questions - does the mouse pointer show lat/lon, are roads shown on
the maps, and how small can I resolve terrain height (e.g. can I see the
height of my street)? One or more of these questions may seem dumb, but
I'm still learning here :)
If you know of a free, on-line source of topo maps that would be helpful
too.
Thanks,
Vince

Now that everyone knows where this gentleman lives....take a look at a
topo of his area. He lives right up against a mountain (in J'ville...Go
Game Cocks! ;-) and probably has huge holes in that area. I know that I
will appreciate relaying off your house when I drive by J'ville!
You go Keith ;-)
To bad that just down the road from him used to live one of the fathers
of packet radio in this area. (Jack Blair N4KMJ ...RIP) Nice man if you
never had a chance to meet him. He and AB4KN here locally turn me onto
APRS :-)

Hi folks,
If you check out the Alabama area, you'll find for my
county and general 20-30 mile area, I appear to be the only mobile.
That's one reason I'm putting this up right now. My base station CAN
hit the next digipeater for wide (WB4GNA). I'm on a fixed income and
spent my 40 bucks available for this month getting the older TNC. I'll
probably have to do with this for a while. The main reason I put this
up was to support me around my town, Jacksonville, because there are
areas that the other digipeater can't read my mobile readily. Based on
what you folks sent back to me, which by the way, is genuinely
appreciated by the neophyte to APRS, I'll set the following today:
Leave myalias as relay
Turn off the HID, every 9.5 is it's setting.
Set btext packet at 15 minutes or so.
I'm still abit confused about the UNPROTO setting.
I don't right now think I'll flood anything locally.
I appreciate all the help on this. Later, when I can afford it, I'll
get a better TNC up and running. But please help me get this one to an
acceptable configuration for now.
73 to all. Keith. AG4AC.

Most places in Europe seem to have standardized on 144.80. Finland is
(has?) moved there from 144.825. Norway/Denmark are moving from 144.8125

APRS Users:
Since we represent the majority of HAM radio that still uses PACKET, we
need to do our share to help support the next DIGITAL satellite that is
BUILT and READY for launch this spring. AMSAT is still short about $64K.
(see http://www.amsat.org )
AMSAT only has about 4000 members (less than 0.1% of HAM radio), yet,
those members contribute to the satellites at the leading edge of our
hobby and our hobby's future. Even if we dont use satellites ourselves,
we all get some mileage out of the accomplishments of our brethren and the
benefit to our hobby.
There are 20,000 of us on FINDU. If only 11% of us sent in a $30
contribution, then AMSAT would reach its goal and we will have a bodacious
new PACKET satellite to replace the dying PCsat in the next few months...
Afterall, we pay $40 a MONTH for our PHONE, $40 a MONTH for our Cable.
$40 a MONTH for our cell phone. $40 a MONTH for our internet access.
Think about what all you get for a one time $40 contribution to the next
AMSAT digital satellite that has the potential to support APRS for the
next 10 years!
Phone in your contribution by credit card to Martha (the only employee of
AMSAT North America) at (301) 589-6062. Tell her to mark you down as an
APRS contributor. (the current majority of AMSAT memebers want analog
satellites for voice QSO's so we need to show them we want DIGITAL birds
or this may be our last)... "Show 'em the money!"

My ECHO-APRS web page http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/echoaprs.html
P.S. but only 5% of APRS users are on this APRSSIG, so either 100% of us
on the SIG have to contribute $60, or get out there and convince your APRS
buddy to contribute his share... <grin>...

BIG difference between the two. AFilter takes the full APRS Internet Stream
and filters only what you want to the client. I still takes a FULL pipe of
data to your computer AND from the server.
JavAPRS is a filter that is implemented by the SERVER and only send to the
user the data requested. The DRAMATICALLY reduces the bandwidth required by
both the server AND the client.
