Anyone have a good email for winaprs authors, I have been trying to get a
problem with the wx alerts password for a couple of months now and now
responses. I upgraded and the the function stopped allowing me to send
skywarn notices for the area.

They monitor this list. Go ahead and post your question. If they don't
answer your question, someone else will.

Please note that the current APRSMax 8.46 is dated Jan. 19, 2000, mak-
ing it, by far, the most durable version of APRS ever released. This is a
testament to how well it has worked for all of us that use it as well as to
the author. When I last had it QRV, it had been so for a solid two years
on a DOS-only box (a Compaq 486-20 laptop with color display I bought for
maybe $35 at a hamfest) without so much as a single lockup or reboot.
BTW, rumors of my disappearance have been greatly exaggerated. I sim-
ply no longer have the time to completely peruse all the various APRS lists
I'm subscribed to. But I am still above ground, and have not assumed room
temperature! 73

Well, the original 220 plan seemed to be the biggest waste of spectrum
perpetrated for a while. Wasn't it supposed to be bought and paid for by
UPS? (Big "brown" aka OOps package smashers!) If I remember, they snuck
some ex-CEO into the FCC to implement their nefarious plan...yeah, it's
coming back like a bad dream now...
Then they abandoned the plan, and 220 and went to cellular, leaving the
frequencies in limbo, except for some cr*p narrowband stuff, (one place I
worked at had the radios, and they stunk for reliability) and now the 220
stuff can be had for peanuts at hamfests, however worthless to ham
interests. Nice, real efficient use of spectrum folks...real nice...
We get the shaft, they get whatever they want, even if only to waste it.
Color me p****d.
So this time, they get Canada to launch the first volley....neat...it's
beginning to smell a lot like BPL.

Before Stan, pop's his cork over these messages -
Yes, you have it correctly, there is a very good probability, of all of us,
loosing *primary* use of that band.
When the U.S. lost the bottom 2 Megs of the old allocation, I was in a
state of "panic" ... as I run a high speed digital trunk (back bone) on
221.5 MHz. between our nodes and servers; some 4 years or so now, I thought
that being very close to the U.S. boarder that I'd be in real trouble.
As it turned out, because we use directional beams, and generally QRP ( 2.5
~ 3 watts ) this covers over 90 miles BTW, (since the noise floor is so
low), with a 99.995 % availability at 19K2 b/sec. Our then DOC, told us to
proceed, "as you were there first", and I've been doing so every since.
If I read the Canuck proposals correctly, there will be room for
"grand-fathering" and even a proposal to make the bottom end, as well as
the top end, "Amateur primary".
You guys and gals, should really try this band ! It has all of the
propagation of 2M (Ev, you paying attention ?) with the low noise floor of
70 cM. Perhaps even better, as we're "primary" and it's not harmonically
related to any other band.
For those of you who are interested, from a Canuck perspective, please see

Everyone,
I have been trying for some time to get my mapping correctly setup on
Xastir can somebody tell me what they think is the best method to
accomplish this.
I want to enable tiger maps, display NWS warning areas at least
outlined, prefer filled in.
I need to know how:
1) Should the CWA/c_12my03.shp file
-Draw filled?
-What map layer? (Currently everything is on 0)
-AutoMap?
2) Should me NWSshapes/w_10de02.shp file
-Same questions as above
3) Shoulw my ZONES/z_16ap03.shp file
-Same questions as above
Also, then is there anything specific in enabling tiger maps.
Currently I have tiger maps working and/or APRSDos maps and that is all.
I know there is an Xastir list, but I couldn't find the info.

Have you tried or do you know about the Xastir forum on Yahoogroups? I
think it is still very active and informative..

The NOAA map files go directly into the
/usr/local/share/xastir/Counties directory. They won't show up in
the Map Chooser at all, unless you also copy or link them into your
maps directory. Some people do so that they can also use them as
maps and not just as weather alerts. The county shapefile is useful
for that.
Compile Shapelib into Xastir so that the weather alerts will work.
You'll automatically get filled shapes when alerts are active, and
the type of alert is written across the area as well. The area is
tinted instead of drawn over in a solid shape, so you can still make
out any maps underneath. There's a togglebutton on the Map menu
that enables/disables the alerts.
All of this should be spelled out in the INSTALL and README.MAPS
files, combined with the help system in Xastir itself.
>Also, then is there anything specific in enabling tiger maps.
There should be a "tigermap.geo" file listed in your maps directory
(if you're running a recent version of Xastir). Enable it in the
map chooser, and make sure you have ImageMagick and either libcurl
or wget support compiled in to Xastir to enable the internet
mapping.
You can also use TIGER/Line map data that has been converted to
Shapefiles, then don't have to rely on the internet mapping stuff.
I use that for street maps while mobile. An up-and-coming Xastir
feature through another set of libraries will allow using TIGER raw
data directly, so you'll then have three different options for using
the tiger data.
