Jim,
I like both of your points:
SAR is a special case that it makes very good sense for.
I'm not sure what vehicle stopping has to do with corner pegging, but
perhaps it is part of the algorithim. Then again, certainly not a new packet
for every time a car stops (stop sign/traffic light etc)? Is a delay
threshold considered? Otherwise stop and go traffic would be worse than
being lost making lots of turns. <g>
Hence, setting default to off, as Scott sugggests in his reply satisfies my
concerns completely.
Thanks for your exceptions.

Shirley you must be joking, right?
Following the logic in what you said, we could also avoid the clutter by
everyone reducing power to 50 milliwatts, too. Or...we could just turn
everything off and there would be no clutter either.
Unless I'm missing something obvious, on freq digi's are what makes the
network a network instead of two cars and/or a house occasionally being able
to hear each other.
Believe me, you would only have had to watch a misconfigured corner pegging
aprs radio run one time, before you became quite concerned about it being a
"mainstream, commonly implemented" feature.
Just to put things into perspective (in case your remarks weren't
tongue-in-cheek), I don't find mobiles beaconing every 3 to 5 minutes, or
home stations every 30 to 60 minutes, or weather stations every 30 mins, to
be "clutter". I do consider many and multiple packets from ONE MOBILE every
minute for three straight hours, clutter...and that's EXACTLY what
happened....I would consider that clutter even if there were NO digipeating.
As Jim pointed out, special use for SAR is entirely a different matter...but
this guy wasn't doing SAR, he had no idea what he was doing....and that's
exactly what I worry about when a feature this prone to cluttering the
network is let loose. Again, as Scott pointed out, the default for his will
be OFF....that takes care of the concern I had and what led to me starting
the thread.

Do to the unstable condition of the worlds weather at this time..Sandy
Claws has requested that all amateur operators be especially vigilant
this christmas season. Be aware of others in need around you and help
out where you can.
Reminding each of us that radio is a hobby, family is always first, but
in the event of an unforseen emergency step forward with determination.
If all of us seek to make even one small part of the world a better
place then soon others might catch on to the idea!

Smartbeaconing can determine when your vehicle is stopped and reduce the
beacon rate accordingly. I've got mine set to reduce the beacon interval to
255 minutes when my speed drops below 5mph.
Eliminates those pesky mobiles that beacon every 30 seconds while parked.
There's all sorts of advantages to Smartbeaconing. Corner pegging is just
one "feature".
Another feature adjusts the beacon interval based on the speed of the
vehicle. In stop and go traffic the beacon would be slowed down as the
distance travelled would be less.

To put things into my perspective, I find mobiles that beacon every 3 to 5
minutes with no change in status to be clutter. They convey no new
information. There's nothing worse then a mobile parked in somebody's
driveway beaconing away all weekend.
Weather stations that beacon every 30 minutes do convey useful information
and I welcome the up to date weather reports.
A mobile travelling through town beaconing every minute with a change in
course also conveys useful information. A mobile just beaconing every
minute is clutter to me.
Keep in mind that Smartbeaconing is very configurable. My high rate of
beaconing is every 5 minutes at a top speed of 60mph. Any speeds below that
retard my beacon rate back. Once I'm parked I beacon every 255 minutes.
In town my beacon angle is set to 30 degrees and I do have corner pegging
enabled.
In general, I probably beacon a lot less with corner pegging enabled then
most dumb trackers that beacon on a fixed interval.
Of course, there's people who believe that beaconing should be set to a high
rate to enable mobiles to see each other in time to start a voice qso with
voice alert.

Not going to find a whole lot of good boys at Leavenworth, I'm afraid. =]
Is this tied into the NORAD tracking?

There is nothing in the smart beaconing that would determine if a tracker
has stopped and it would not send a posit indicating such.

I'm planning to add that to my implementation. Like when you fall below the
low speed threshold for at least one minimum (high speed) beacon interval,
beacon once before going to low speed (stopped) rate.
