I just got notification of this blue tooth adaptor from parallax.com in my
inbox....
http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=30068
Wondering if it will allow my kenwood radio to connect to the GPS wirelessly...
or the laptop to get GPS data while the kenwood talks wired to the gps....

Am I missing something? I have a ADI AR-146 in my van and just bought a
used ADI AR-147 for the house. In my van (146) I use the audio off of
the mike jack to feed the TNC. I am trying to do the same in the house
on the 147 but can't seem to get any audio off of pin 6. Did they change
between models? Too tired right now to tear into it and don't have a
schematic handy.
Thanks,
Robert

It's going to be a very expensive replacement for 8' of serial cable since
you will need two of the devices at $100.00 each (one for each end of the
link) if the target computer, radio, etc doesn't already have Bluetooth
capability.

Ahhhhh ... of course. We have such a low number of Igates and satellite
users that the logic didn't occur to me.
(I plead too much Christmas shopping and present wrapping!)

Is there any other way to check the downlink capture ?? I know that I got a
beacon or two while in NC yesterday morning, no digi coverage on this
section of I-95 but I did hear the sat and know I got 1-2 position reports
digi'ed. The night before (Friday) I was also out of digi coverage and
THINK I got a good packet in but I am not sure.
When I got to the hotel last night I checked the web page and I don't see
my call on the web page.

It's the least expensive BT cable solution I've seen.
Normally $250/end.
It's pretty ludicrous, since the whole point of BT was a LOW COST cable
replacement. They've managed to make a pretty good imitation of a
government project out of it, adding in everything they could think of, and
making the protocol very complicated.
They aren't making a huge profit at $99, either. The BT chipsets are
relatively expensive, so in small quantities, you pay a lot.

I know this isn't exactly an embedded solution but this D-Link
USB->Bluetooth adapter cost only $49 at xxxxxxxxxxx and
even less on the web.

That's the problem.
The PC card stuff is mass produced, and less expensive.
You can get BT embedded in modems and such cheaply also.
But you can't get both ends cheaply.
The embeddable units should talk SPP, and should work with the PC cards or
other BT adaptors just fine.

Motorola's introducing new chips in the HC08 line with Zigbee support...
sort of like Bluetooth, but slower and longer range. Since I'm already
using an HC08 in the OpenTracker, I'm hoping the next version will give me
wireless capability without much extra hardware. At the very least it
should be possible to configure the device without a cable hookup. Not sure
yet what else I might do with it.
BTW, the OpenTracker now supports SmartBeaconing(tm). Now if the beta test
boards would ever get here I could start some real testing...

I had one response to my prior question (Thanks Jacques) but I think most
people are like me and have the SIG in Digest mode. I ended up having to
take the audio off of the speaker jack...which is what I didn't want to
do (want to be able to monitor off of the same radio without wiring up a
bunch of other stuff to do so). The ADI AR-146 will accept it off of the
mic jack. The manual says pin 6 is audio out...but it isn't on mine.
Anybody have a schematic or know if and why they took this off of the
147?
Thanks,
Robert

This is the reply I got today from the maker of the USB TNC. Hopefully it
will answer some of your questions.
Subject: RE: TNC - Request for product information
Dear Sir,
Thank you for e-mail.
We are under final tests phase. We will be very happy to offer you our
product, as we will finalize our tests. More news (including manual) we will
send you by the end of December. Final product is scheduled to be ready for
sale by the mid/end of January. Price is xxxxx Euro. About your question,
please find our answer below:
From one side there is an RJ45 with 8 pins:
- 2 pins are external power supply (optional) "+" and "GND"
- 2 pins is GPS receiver (tx and rx)
- 4 pins are Radio Interface (tx, rx, ptt, gnd)
Please note that GND is common also for GPS.
USB connector is dedicated for the computer interface (data receive and
transmit). It is also used for battery charging. Battery could be also
charged form the external power supply (optional). Battery are included in
the same small box with TNC (and of course with the same introductory
price), presented on the web page. So, you will have 8 cables coming out
from the RJ45 side. This TNC, because batteries are already included, could
work independently from power and computer. Could also work powered from USB
or external power supply. Selection is done via software or automatically.
You do not need to open your device for any reason.
Please do not hesitate to e-mail us with any questions.
With Kindest regards
Ioannis Mourtsiadis
