Dave Sloan would like to recall the message, "Precision Mapping OCX Error".

I just tried to open the Precision Mapping Window again. IT OPENED! I had
made no changes and the only thing I had done was send the below message
asking for assistance! I love WINDOWS!

There's a VERY good reason for split PLs.

I volunteer at a Boy Scout camp, and they put up a repeater for their UHF
business radios. But the terrain resulted in poor coverage.

However, they were two sides to the 'valley'. The physical setup was such
that low power FRS radios can work from anywhere on one side to anywhere on
the other. But 5W sometimes has trouble working two places on the same
side.

With split PL, they could have set up two SMALL repeaters. One on each
side of the valley. And set the radios so that there were two 'groups',
one for each side. Then program all the radios so that the PL works the
repeater on the OTHER side of the pond...

Why a 'split' PL? You use three PLs. An east side transmit PL, a west
side transmit PL, and a generic receive PL (so everybody can hear
everybody...)

The added advantage is that now everybody works low power, and batteries
last longer too.

Someday I'll learn to check things before send an email to the list. I am
now getting a window for Precision Mapping but I lose the road detail when
I zoom in (my CD isn't accessed when I zoom in) I know that this problem
has been covered before. I looked in the archived messages but couldn't
find the answer. If someone remembers the resolution I would appreciate
knowing what I need to do!

I use the term CTCSS to refer to the receiving of a tone and PL to refer
to the transmitting of a tone. I guess the way most rigs label it is
actually "CTCSS" and "TONE"... for RX and TX....

You can only use Voice Alert on a rig that has the TNC connected to the
discriminator or audio prior to the CTCSS Squelch circuit... otherwise
your TNC wont hear anything except another local voice alert station.

Yes, I meant "most" dont....

Anyway, bottom line is that we dont want to hear home station's packets
24/7 transmitting on VOICE ALERT...

Actually, the D700's have separate selections for CTCSS and for TONE, but
when you set CTCSS, the TX tone is also enabled. You cannot separate
them.

The reason for wanting to RX with CTCSS but not transmitting tone is what
would solve the problem of home stations who want to listen for Voice
Alert, yet not be transmitting their packets 24/7 on Voice Alert...

No, because if you remove the requirement for the *, then you capture
everyone's UPLINK's whether successful or not. THis would make the WEB
page useless for showing successful packets.

The solution is to simply set up an IGate somewhere in the country that
listens to the downlink directly. It only takes one...

Dave,
Check your WinAprs setup to see if you have correctly specified the drive
containing the Pmapxx\States directory and data. If this drive is not
available etc, street detail will not appear.

Well, the APRS bug hit me again. I want to put a tracker back in my truck.
Going to AES Monday.

Here's the situation:

-I already have a KPC3+
-I can't afford a D700.
-FT1500's are on closeout
-they have (had) a used IC2100
-I would LIKE the radio to be (if not hidden) mounted in the back of my
truck

--thus I need something that can either auto-power-on or just be left on,
and have it turned on and off via relay... So a hard power switch,
not a softkey I have no real reason to beacon when the truck isn't
running... Im thinking along the lines of wiring a relay to the ignition,
so whenever the truck is running, the tracker will be operational.

-I have given up on /\/\ or GE commercial gear for now.... My time is worth
money, and I just don't have the time to try and retune a commercial rig, I
don't have SPACE for a syntor or rangr, and with all these 2M only rigs
cheap, I figgure this is an easier way to go.
-I would LIKE the radio I install to be PC programmable, since it will also
serve as an "in a pinch" voice rig (in Rolla, we do things like Rally
communications, so in those cases, I could put in the rally freqs as a
backup...)

Ideas, comments, etc?

Thanks
Ken, KC9UMR

I haven't used the IC2100 but use the FT1500 in several digipeater
projects. They work great. While they look like a soft key on off
switch it acts like a hard key. When power returns, it comes right back
on where you left it. It also has a lock feature that I like so I set
all the settings, turn the lock on and then accidental button pushes
don't mess anything up. It uses a standard 6-pin mini-din plug for the
tnc connection that is not affected by the volume/squelch dial on the
radio.
Plus, with the FT1500M going for $xxx it's hard to beat.

Bruce, KQ4TV
