I have tried a couple of things and this is what I have found out. I have
always been able to connect via TCP using the APRSERVE.TXT to the
www.aprswest.net 14579 APRSWest Western States coverage. The other
day I commented out this entry and added clspco.firenet.us 14579 which
is a local server ran by a ham here in Colorado Springs. I was able to
connect without any problem. After running it for a couple of days I
noticed that I had lost my connection. When I tried to re-connect to the
clspco.firenet.us I received the message that "TCP failed to open". I shut
down restarted and the same result. It was at this point that I sent my
first email about this problem. I just edited the file to open
www.aprswest.net and it is working correctly. However, when I edit it back
to clspco.firenet.us I again receive the "TCP open failed" message. I guess
that I'll contact Lee who runs the server and see if the problem is on his
end.

Thanks & 73,
Dave N0EOP

Good link, but where do you find servers.ini ? WinAPRS uses
aprsxtra.txt , and the original question was about WinAPRS 2.6.1. Right???

Correct me if I'm wrong. You are using a Windows machine attempting to
connect to these servers using WinAPRS. The error message is coming from
your operating system (MS) not WinAPRS. The correct format using Winaprs in
APRSERVE.TXT should be:

aprswest.net<tab>14579<tab>APRSWest Western States

The www added to the prefix, is not necessary.

In Ui-VIEW32:

aprswest.net:14579;APRSWest Western States

Seems to me TCP is failing in your operating system. What version of
Windows?

Are you closing your connection before attempting to connect elsewhere?

It should appear as a question mark or maybe I think the better ICON is
the DISH.

>Where does it get the zulu time from?

From the UTC question it asked when you started up and the Daylight
Savings time switch. You should have ansered -5 for EST and toggled
DST to standard time. I belie you can toggle it with the alt-S OTHER
DST command... then SAVE

Glad you are on the air!

Hello

I need the wiring diagram for a KPC3 and a Radio Shack HTX 212 or 242. The
Cat # is 19-1125 or 26. THE DIAGRAM ON PACKET RADIO DOT COM DOES NOT
WORK!!! If anybody can help please let me know.

The issue Dave ran into was due to a problem at the server end and has been
corrected. In most cases, it you have trouble with one server and not
another, it's probably a good idea to contact the server's sysop directly.
A message to the group can likely get lost in the noise.

One item regarding port 14579 on the FireNet Servers - that port is not the
same as port 14579 on other servers. FireNet port 14579 provides only
active WxSvr objects and other weather-related objects. It is not a history
dump or a regional feed. See http://clspco.firenet.us for information about
the ports offered by that server.

Subject: PSK31 APRS: A Request for Relay to APRS sig

Hi Stan,
Though I'm no longer a member of the APRS sig, I've had a thread forwarded
to me about PSK31 use. Since PropNET uses PSK31 (and UI-View, too) I
wondered if you would be willing to post something to the list to help
clarify some misconceptions for the crew there. The note is below.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

PSK31 us used every day with APRS software called UI-View. As a result, it
is important to clear up some misconceptions on this topic that have been
recently floated to the APRS list.

When PSK31 is used to launch "frames" (in quotes, because the concept of
frames is different when AX.25 is not involved), one simply does four
things:

o Include a Preamble to allow time for RXers to find the stream and lock-on
o Assure the *payload* is as short as possible
o Include a 5-byte overhead for CRC (error) checking
o Use PSK31 software that will scan a waterfall, locking-on to streams

Once these components are included, PSK31-based APRS becomes a reality. It
is used every day on 28.131 MHz USB (transceiver display frequency) +
1500hz PSK31 audio.

FAQ's
=====
How do I get more information about participating?
  http://www.PropNET.org and take the hyperlink for PSK31 (there's AX.25
  activity, too).

A 20-second PSK31 transmission consumes a lot of the channel capacity.
Don't stations QRM each other a lot?
Not at all. TX's take place once every 5 minutes, for about 20-seconds.
Natural differences in accuracy between transceivers spread signals out
  +/- 200hz from 28.131 USB + 1500hz. With a 63-hz single-stream
bandwidth, the 400-hz sub-waterfall can support a LOT of signals. On
the off-chance that two signals are exactly on the same frequency, the
PSK31 middleware (software that encodes UI-View information into PSK31
audio and vice versa) includes a Carrier Detect mode to minimize QRM.

There is no error detection on PSK31. How do you get UI-View to properly
decode a received stream?
The PSK31 "middleware" that is used includes an option to include a CCITT-
based Cyclic Redundancy Checksum (CRC) at the end of each payload.
Likewise, the receiving station has an option to look for that and ignore
any transmission without valid CRC...or to accept whatever it gets,
ignoring the CRC. This is similar to AX.25's PASSALL function.

What does a PSK31-based APRS transmission look like if decoded?
The payload looks a lot like AX.25 APRS. It happens to be sandwitched
between a preamble (the first line) and a CRC (^ABCD). See three
  examples below:

  A minimal PSK31 frame: FOR INFO: HTTP://WWW.PROPNET.ORG
                             WB4APR>CQ:[fm19xx]^ABCD
                                    ^^
This conveys no useful information, yet
                                    consumes airtime.

  A better PSK31 frame: FOR INFO: HTTP://WWW.PROPNET.ORG
                             WB4APR>hy:[fm19xx]^ABCD
                                    ^^
This says that the transmission was
                                    originated on 10-meters. H=HF, Y=28-29MHz
                                    according to the PropNET protocol

  A robust PSK31 frame: FOR INFO: HTTP://WWW.PROPNET.ORG
                             WB4APR>hy:[fm19xx]PHG9200C6/^ABCD
                                               ^^^^^^^^^^
                                               Based on Bob's newest variable
                                               length PHG protocol. An on-
                                               line calculator is available:
                                http://www.apritch.myby.co.uk/phgracalc.htm

Why are you clogging up my PSK31 waterfall with all of these unattended
PSK31 signals?
Two points: 400 hz out of a very large band is hardly "clogging up" a
waterfall. :) On the other hand, on bands where APRS operation takes
place near traditional PSK31 activity, such signals are used to determine
band openings in progress...allowing for human communication to be sought.
A good example is 6-meters, where activity is on 50.290+2500hz (at the top
of the waterfall for 6m PSK31 enthusiasts. When streams are observed up
there, then the band is opening...work the DX!

Evhen Tupis, W2EV
