This has been dicussed many times.
The problems are:
1) PSK31 is 10 times slower than even 300 baud HF packet (40 times
slower than the usual VHF packet); even a simple posit takes 10-15
seconds to send. This means the channel capacity (number of stations
that can be supported) is extremely limited
2) There is no error detection or correction to ensure valid data at
the receiving end. With normal AX25 packet, even an unconnected packet
(as used in APRS) goes through an error detection process at the
receiving end. It will not be passed out of the TNC (hardware or
software) to an application if it is somehow defective. [ Unless you
have the passall "junk" mode turned on in a TNC.]
3) The tuning accuracy requirements for PSK31 are so precise that
trying to transmit beacons "in the blind" to a receiver that doesn't
transmit back would require 10 or even 1 Hz display resolution and an
extremely-accurately-calibrated, high-stability TCXO in the user's radio.
All that being said, there is a group of people that are doing this. An
activity similar to APRS, BeaconNet, transmits PSK31 APRS-format data on
10 meters. The purpose of BeaconNet is to monitor propagation, not
track the positions of mobiles. As a result, nearly all the the
transmissions are made by a handful of fixed stations and most of the
users just listen.
They are using an application written by G4IDE (the author of UI-View)
called PSK31 Server. This is a waterfall-display-type PSK31 program
that looks very similar to DigiPan but has the added twist of a built-in
TCP/IP server and interface. You configure the Internet connection of
any standard APRS program to connect to your own IP instead of one "out
there" on the Internet. [ Most of the users are using UI-View. ]
G4IDE is no longer supporting the program -- it was really just an
experimental quick hack -- but it is available in the archives of the
Yahoo group " ui-view_PSK31 " and from the BeaconNet website at:

This is a simple one. Open the servers.ini file in notepad, and add
the list of servers from http://www.aprs-is.net/APRSServers.htm
Please don't use the Tier 1 servers. Only connect to the Tier 2
servers, and use the one that's closest to you for the best feed.

Good link, but where do you find servers.ini ? WinAPRS uses aprsxtra.txt ,
and the original question was about WinAPRS 2.6.1. Right???

I tried using arizona.aprs2.net, on port 10154, and I found that my
positions were not being fed back into the internet stream. I haven't
tried to troubleshoot it, but it was pretty weird. I kept at it for over 9
hours before I gave up.

As to the second paragraph... it should not be out of the realm of the
Capabilities of HAMS to address this issue... yes it would make the
String longer... but ECC is well understood by the satellite folks...
2) There is no error detection or correction to ensure valid data at
the receiving end. (Snip)
As to the third paragraph.... there is software out there eliminates This
issue... there is PSK software that actually searches through the Whole
audio "passband" (what's on the waterfall)... looking for a signal, And
when it see's a signal... it looks for a "header" text string and Places
what follows into a message buffer/file. No tuning required other Than
having roughly the same audio "passband". In fact, the same Software is
capable of looking for 10 simultaneous signals... and the Associated header
(user selectable)... and then writing the received Data (string length
limited or with termination string) for all 10 Signals... to the
buffer/file. Radio tuning becomes almost a non-issue.
3) The tuning accuracy requirements for PSK31 are so precise that trying
to transmit beacons "in the blind" to a receiver that doesn't transmit back
would require 10 or even 1 Hz display resolution and an
extremely-accurately-calibrated, high-stability TCXO in the user's radio.
My two cents...

So we need to use only the GRIDSQUARE format about 14 bytes.

By using an upper case callsign and mixed case Grid square, then syntax
checking can detect a lot of errors and with some heuristic software can
make a good guess at fixing some of them..
All I ever asked was that PSK-31 authors include the provision for an
operator to enter his LAT/LONG (or grid square) when he customizes his
program so that he can click on "Send Grid" at anytime in a QSO and then
the software on the other end will capture the grid and we end up with
APRS type informaitno being gleaned from the QSO.
THis can then be fed to the users APRS program for display...
But the PSK-31 crowd is so anti-APRS that they cannot see how simple this
is and how it does NOTHING different thanwaht they are already doing, but
just uses a satndard GRID notation so the receiving software can capture
it...

I just ran a couple of tests vs. arizona.aprs2.net:10154 with APRS+SA
and it works just fine. I first used AE5PL-LT as my call and it did not
show up in findu. However, I was getting into APRS-IS as verified by
monitoring a different data stream connected to the APRS-IS core
servers.
I changed the call-SSID to AE5PL-9 and I was seen in findu. Findu
apparently does not record non-numeric SSID's even though they are valid
for APRS-IS use.
