Subject: Mangled TT3 from KB7PUX-7

This came up on the CA APRS list.
http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/raw.cgi?call=kb7pux-7
KB7PUX-7 appears to be a TinyTrak3 sending uncompressed position reports
with timestamp, course/speed, and altitude. Trouble is, many of the packets
are mangled. For example:
KB7PUX-7>APT310,WIDE2,qAR,AE6JN:/A81852z3430.39N/11719.31W>222/00W/A=002873
Note the 'a' in the timestamp field, the the 'w' in the speed.
Interestingly, this seems to happen regardless of what IGATE it comes
through. I've seen the mangled packets on the air myself. And I don't see
any other mangled stations in the area, which is usually a symptom of a bad
PASSALL setting someplace. There's another nearby station running the same
configuration on a TT3 and he's showing no errors at all.
I'm curious if perhaps it's got a noisy connection to the GPS. Since NMEA
employs an 8-bit checksum, that means it's going to fail to detect about 1
error in 256. My Garmin puts out one full NMEA report every two seconds, so
that's potentially one undetected error every nine minutes - enough for a
tracker to look like it's working, maybe.
Byon - does the TT3 verify the NMEA checksum? In what way could it be
expected to fail given corrupted inputs? Could the encoding routines
produce the kind of errors shown?
SIG - assuming the output of the device is valid (maybe someone local can
verify), how is it we're seeing runs of very similar errors coming from
multiple places?

I'm going there in a few weeks. I'll report my findings.

I put all my info about Milemarks on my APRS errata page. Its about the
6th link down in the list.
http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/aprs/errata.html
There is a map example, my MILEMARK.TXT descriptive file and a copy of my
Basic source code used to display them... and the MM.DAT file itself...
though I had to save it as a .TXT file for your browser to let you get it.
Just rename it to MM.DAT before use.
Anyone should be able to take it an be able to overlay the mile marks on
any map. Again, my only objective was to overlay a one mile ambiguity
circle in the vicinity of where the mile mark should be to guide the
user where a non-APRS station might be that reports his position by
milemark.

Subject: d7a GPS Cable?

I'm looking for a few varieties of GPS cables for the Kenwood d7a. Does
anyone sell good sturdy cables to connect directly from the d7a to the
Garmin Etrex series?
Perhaps custom cables to connect directly from the d7a to various PDAs as
well?
I've built some, but would prefer something more sturdy than my Radio
Shack connectors and various adaptors.
Thank you.
