There is a WX station about 56 miles from me that never decodes
correctly on my D7. The position comes through fine, but all I see is
the text representation ".../001g003t021#0000" on the display and
nothing on the formatted section. Or is it the D7 that is the problem?
Also, the WX station is broadcasting at 2 minute intervals. Any
suggestions for a broadcast interval for weather stations?
Here is one of the packets and what I think may be not decoding
correctly. Assistance in decoding would be appreciated:

explain the absence of wind direction...
Thank you!!

Anyone try decoding the packets from a Lacrosse Technology WX station? I
picked up one at xxxxxx tonight, $39.99USD for a temp/humidity TX with 2
RX devices. I figured I'd play with this one before purchasing the $99.99
setup with the wind indicator.
The temp/humidity TX broadcasts at a regular interval on 433.920 (I know,
hell for a 432 setup). I used multimon under linux to try to identify the
packet to no avail. It sounds like a pulse, rapid fire and if I'm
counting correctly there are 4, maybe 5 pulses. It looks like between
each pulse it drops key, the signal meter on my yaesu rig pulsed
accordingly. If there's interest I'll make a wav available. It'd be nice
to figure out how to deploy a cheaper WX station rather that offer a Peet
to the various powers (theft, lightening) that be.
Here's info on the TX

http://www.lacrossetechnology.info/faq/transmitters/faq_tx4.html
LMK if more info is needed. I wish I had a better idea of what I'm
listening to.

Hi Jeff -
I can probably explain this weather station. It's mine. And I wrote the
firmware and designed the hardware it is running on. :-)
The packet meets APRS spec, and is shown as valid according to aprsdec (my
gold standard). None of the Kenwoods will decode it however - the problem
of the Kenwoods. I didn't want to send many extra bytes of data just so the
broken Kenwoods would display it correctly. aprsworld.net, findu, xastir,
and possibly other APRS clients parse the packets correctly.
>Also, the WX station is broadcasting at 2 minute intervals. Any
>suggestions for a broadcast interval for weather stations?
Yes, this is my mistake. It's actually transmitting faster than that. I
accidentally left my test firmware installed in the weather station and it
transmits at 50 second rate. It was supposed to be three minutes, which
shouldn't have causes and undue stress on the APRS network up north. This
is causing me problems as well - the station is solar powered and the power
budget appears to be negative while transmitting that fast.
Unfortunately it is a 1000 mile round trip for me to go from Ames, Iowa to
Madeline Island, Wisconsin. I won't be able to do that until early January.
I intend to implement a mechanism so the transmit rate and other pertinent
parameters can be controlled by sending an APRS message to the weather
station. That could save many miles of driving, $$$, and cold winter nights
in an unheated cabin.

Your interpertation is entirely correct.

The "..." indicates that no data is present. I think this is right. Bob B.?

PIC is that station type. For more details of the weather station you can
visit:

Sometime I hope to document the weather stations better. There are actually
a handful of them on APRS. KB0VYO-12, KB0THN-2, K0NY-2 and a few temporary
test stations. KB0VYO-12 and KB0THN-2 are entirely stand-alone solar
powered weather stations.

How is the SHELTER list used with WinAprs? Is it used with any other
version? I checked the documentation for both DOS and Windows and didn't
find anything.

Aren't these simply PS-2 connectors? A PS-2 extension cable is what I use
to connect to my Yaesu FT-1500M. Just cut off one end and put on a DB-9 or
whatever you need to connect to the TNC.

Is anyone using the Garmin GPS 15H OEM receiver? This is a moderately
low-power (33 mA @ 12 vdc), very small GPS engine with RS-232 output.
How about the older Garmin GPS25 OEM engine?

It has no WIND DIRECTION. If it has a wind speed of 1 MPH, then it must
have a direction...

Wow, interesting comments:
1) The kenwoods do properly decode a valid WX packet
2) The example packet is *not* in conformance with the spec in that
it has a wind SPEED but has no direction
3) The fact that some other clients plot an indeterminate, non-compliant
wind vector is not necessarily a valid measure of "validity"
4) Damning the vast majority of MOBILE APRS users to no weather data
becasuse you personally dont use a mobile kenwood is not good for the
general APRS objectives and community..
You are sending a packet that contains a wind speed without a wind
direction. That is inconsistent.

Yes, but that is only for the positionless WX format where there is a
c... and s... field. In the COMPLETE format, there is no c... or s...
field. Those fields are FIXED length and without designators and are
*required* fields.
>The "..." indicates that no data is present. I think this is right. Bob B.?
Nope, not in the complete format...

Wow, what great assets, why do you not intend to support mobile users of
WX data?
