Nothing particularly new here, it's the same system used for ELTs and EPIRBs
for years.
My biggest concern with APRS emergency beacons is the lack of centralized
coordination for response. You've got no way of knowing if anyone else has
already responded, or what progess is being made in the response effort.
In our case, having a full-time coordination center isn't practical. Maybe
you could designate one person as the emergency coordinator each day, but
even that's questionable with volunteers. What we need, at a minimum, is an
established procedure on how to coordinate response. I've suggested before
that we have an electronic bulletin board at a well-known location where you
could post notes about emergency beacon events, but I'm starting to think a
better approach might be to integrate it more into the fabric of APRS.
Maybe all that's needed is a particular client behavior - for example, when
an emergency beacon is heard, all messages to or from that station are
displayed in a special window. When responding to a beacon, you just send a
message to the station with an emergency (even if it's not message capable)
stating that you're calling the callsign owner's home, or that you've
contacted the highway patrol, or that the beacon was confirmed as a false
alarm. Hopefully the network and clients are configured such that anyone
who sees the emergency beacon will also see the response messages.
Thoughts?
Scott

I know that I have asked befoer but still no answer
who is the party sending the aprs-1 messages telling users to
get a registered copy of their software?
This happened before 3-4 weeks ago and then stopped after 2 weeks
since I have been registered from 1999 something is wrong. Do any
other igate users have this problem ..

I believe Pete answered this question already
http://www.tapr.org/tapr/list-archive/aprssig/0310/msg00666.html
It appears you are not connecting with a proper password when using the
afilter program. You might want to check the documentation or author on
that software package. The igate is responding correctly to your
unregistered connection.
wilma can be a real pain, and she's slower than molassas in January,
but she does work

I loaded PM 5.0 with WinAprs 2.7.2 and boy am I disappointed. The acreen
won't enlarge to full screen and the icons are not positioned correctly
until you zoom in to about the 60 mile radius.
Anyway...Mr. Sproul please keep workign on it as you can. Thanks for a
great program, however... I want to go back to PM 3.0
Tried to re-activate the Older OCX and I get errors. Has anyone been
successful in going <-- back to PM 3.0/3.5 with WinAprs 2.5.1/2.4.7 etc.?
Thanks for the bandwidth.

For what its worth, I feel they have abandoned trying to get PM 5 or 6
working since they made WinAPRS work with the TIGER mapping system.
These maps are ok, time consuming and really stink as far as street
level tactical tracking.
My suggestion would be to just abandon anything greater than WinAPRS
2.51 and use PM 3.0

Has anyone purchased the Garmin iQue3600 and used it with APRS? This PDA
has a built in GPS.
Info at http://www.garmin.com/products/iQue3600/
I have a friend of mine that is interested in purchasing one of these PDA's
if it will work with his Kenwood TH-D7A(G). Has anyone done this? How do
you connect this PDA to the TH-D7? How do you like the iQue3600? Since it
has the Palm OS, what maps can you run with the APRS program?
Thanks,
