Howdy,

I am working on a findu.com form, I still have a bit of work to do but you
can get the idea.

I'm not sure of how this form will be used, but in some cases, maybe
people are interested in pixels, but more often, they are interested in an
"area" around the target of interest. APRS defines this area with a
simple STANDARD term called "RANGE SCALE".

Because it is a simple and universal way to convey the "size" of the area
of interest. The definition of RANGE SCALE was fundamental to APRS and I
am deeply disappointed that other authors ignore it and so we have no
common way to refer to "areas of interes" across platforms.

de WB4APR, Bob

P.S. No matter what the size, pixels, shape, aspect ratio or antying
else, RANGE SCALE simply means the distance from the center of the map to
the nearest edge. This way, if EVERYONE is looking at the same "RANE
SCALE" then they will ALL be guaranteeed to see the same area and all
contacts within that RANGE SCALE of the target.

Please, lets get this standard implemented in all APRS applications. Give
feedback to your favorite author to let them know the importance of this
unifying concept in APRS...

I didnt mean for my comments to sound like they were diredcted at you
(and I fear they did). I am just frsutrated about the general state of
software not using some of the common APRS fundamentals...

I'd make one that reads"

"Create a map with Range Scale of XXXX miles around station YYYYY
  or location LAT/LONG XXXX/YYYY"

Or something like that...\>

That's not what those parameters are trying to set. The scale (ie range) is
probably automagically selected, Andrew's parameters are for how many pixel
wide and high it occupies on the screen. IE is the GIF 320x240 or 640x480 or
800x600.

Use Xastir or use GPSMan directly? No need to reinvent the wheel.

Curt how do I use xastir to download a track ?

I have installed all the perl modules

GPS:: etc

I used track-get.pl but the script came back GPS timed out, so I checked in
windowz with hypertrm and serial connection is ok. ie I get nmea flow in
nmea mode.

And yes it is in GARMIN GARMIN mode

Cheers Andrew vk4tec

You install GPSMan and gpsmanshp, configure/recompile/install Xastir.
You'll see new options under the Interface menu for downloading tracks.
Xastir will create a Shapefile maps for each download.

You can also use GPSMan directly, bypassing Xastir. In that case you get a
choice of storage formats for the data.

I haven't used track-get for a while. Last I did though it worked
fine. I use Xastir/GPSMan these days.

I'm curious.. if you've had no trouble with UI-View, and plenty of trouble
with WinAPRS, why would you want to switch?
