Subject: ******* CONTEST THAT KEEPS GOING ON AND ON AND ON AND ON.

[lots censored]
Well too much time wasted bickering. If you guys and gals would quit having
a ******* contest I need lots of help with my D7A(G) with all it's new
features. For several days I have not seen too much that is informative. I
had a First run D7A and this one is so much different that I can't believe
it. I need help. I have not seen anything on this ssig that would help me
with this new radio that is so amazing. I use it with a Garmin GPS III
which means I can go on foot to search for something. I have map on the GPS
and APRS built into radio. Doesn't get any better than this. The basics.
Can anyone answer a few questions for me.
1. When I go to my position in the menu why is it that I have POS1 POS2 and
POS3.
2. I now have waypoint with a setting of 9 digits NEMA or 8, 7, 6, or off.
And mile What is this for. Is it how may digits will be reflected back to
my GPS when it shows waypoints. It will only take 6 digits as far as
waypoints that it will show.
3. I see it has time zone UTC setting. I may have it set right at -5:00 CST.
4. What are the finer points of setting up and using the MSG group ie:
ALL,QST,CQ,KWD. How would I set it for an emergency when I need to be
tracked to the sight of the crash or tornado. I know you could track
N0OOR-7 ok. But lets fine tune this. I think KWD would be only data from a
Kenwood radio. CQ would be used possibility for contesting. CQ CQ CQ sounds
familiar. I forget what QST stands for I think a magazine. Would the ALL
setting be all APRS packets? As I go through the menu I now have reply
message and auto reply on. Simple enough. Temp and mile ok.
5. Now the UNPROTOCOL. Mine came from the factory APK002. I could not find
myself on the internet. Changed that to APK001 and it is ok now. What are
all the possibilities that I could use this for on this radio. I just know
that it stands for Kenwood.
6. I don't understand all the talk about WIDEn-n or WIDEn-N. What I do know
is when I beacon out RELAY,WIDE that I show up on the internet in 2-3
seconds and I can find myself on the Google search which shows me on a map
which is one of the main uses for this program. Type N0OOR-7 so you can
see, in Google that is. I think the use for widen-n might be used if you
were in the desert and you wanted your signal to reach the internet or get
relayed maybe via HF. Looking at the math please don't use it unless you
can prove to yourself that you need it. Enough said.
7. Status text not to get confused with POS COMMENT. We have again a choice
of TEXT1 TEXT2 and TEXT3 I think I understand how 1 might be used but how
or why TEXT2 and TEXT3. OK lets keep moving.
8. Icon ok I think I might have that one, but simple as it might be I am
using the little truck icon 8 if you have any problems keeping up just d/l
the Manuel from Kenwood ok.I wonder if I should be a -14 or -7 after my
call. Which is back to the only major problem that I see with APRS. The
realm of some things not known.
9. What is and how do I use POS AMBIGU? Which I have set to off. If someone
can explain this one great.
Now can someone explain some if not all of these features to me and how I
can use them them. If so then you are using your brain for something
positive instead of seeing who has the biggest ****, well I thing you know.
Now I have given some things for the geniuses to get to work on so they can
really shine like they are wishing to. Now a good answer to any of the
questions is a chance to shine and do something to further APRS for the
better use of this aspect of the hobby and all of the features of this
radio to it's full potential. So please let me know as soon as you can.
Please no one who thinks that what they think is how the law should be
because this is not software that I am asking about but same good working
hardware that was encoded on some definite rules.

It is one thing to debate an APRS-related topic here on the SIG and as far
as I am concerned, you can debate the topic until the horse drops dead and
is hauled off to the glue factory, but do NOT let the debate get personal.
Name-calling and personal attacks on people you disagree with do not belong
on this SIG. APRSSIG subscribers include children, teenagers, ladies, and
gentlemen, so please act appropriately.

Yes, thanks. And I am a very grateful user of MAP.FINDU.COM. And one of
the things that I, as a user, would like to see on the MAP.FINDU.COM web
page is the standard APRS "RANGE SCALE". It is so easy, that it only took
me about 1 minute to add it to your HTML source code.
See the RANGE SCALE version of the map.findu.com/wb4apr-9 web page:
http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/findu.htm
I simply added the range scales in the upper left corner of each map...
It would be a nice addition to the page and would convey to the user the
approximate size of the view using the standard APRS lexicon of Range
Scale for compatibilty and commonality with other APRS displays...
No, its no big deal, but it is the accumulation of these simple things
that add up to cross platform user familiarity within APRS
It doesnt need to be red. I only made them red so that it is easy to see
what I added.
Thanks
Bob

Hello Bob,

Simple translation:
1) An icon and its key attributes are atomic; i.e. you cannot have one
without the other.
2) You do not need to show all icons, but if you don't, make shure the user
is aware that he does not see the whole picture.
From 1) follows also:
3) *If* you show an icon then show it completely, i.e. including all its
key attributes.
4) Never show icons without its key attributes, the user cannot guess if
information is missing or simply not there.
----------------------
For Steve's "toxic cloud" example this means that that person would only
want to see the weather icons, but that these icons carry information about
their age, accuracy, speed and direction and whatever key attributes the
icon may be asociated with. This makes sense to me because that way he can
make a good assessment of the current weather condition and make a
prediction where this toxic cloud will move to.
This also means that key attributes should be realy that, if an attribute
it not interesting in some cases then chances are 99% that its not a key
attribute. In that sense I can imagine that the creator of an object is not
a key attribute (doesn't have to show up always on everybodies screen all
the time) but just an important attribute that only the people who are
dealing with the object are interested in.
I hope this is an acurate summary.
Kind regards,
Henk.
