This may be a good time for a reminder to the list membership as to the
correct way to identify network appliances with multiple functions.
In order of importance, what should the icon be, followed by the overlay
and any other special functions (and how are they identified?). One
example of many possibilities is: a TraceN-N digi, with WX, an IGate and
sitting at an EOC.

This is not an OBJECT, this is an ITEM, the payload of an OBJECT starts
with ";", an ITEM starts with ")", as your packet does, The Kenwoods do not
display ITEMS, they do display OBJECTS.
Modify your packet to (note: OJBECT names are always 9 positions wide while
items are variable length between 3 and 9 characters, so I have to adde an
additional space to your 8 character wide "146-895 "). I also added a space
before "Morris", now it shows up nicely on the TH-D7 screen:
1:Fm KC2RLM-1 To APRS <UI pid=F0 Len=49 >[18:24:39]
;146-895 *101133z4050.00N/07431.00W$PL 151.4 Morris Cty
The DHM value is a dummy, I filled it with the current time. Alternatively
use 010000z for "no time". You need to have a timestamp for an OBJECT. If
you leave the timestamp out, the TH-D7 will not show the object but will
show your own call at a completely wrong location. I hope this helped. For
more information see pages 57, 58 and 58 of the APRS Specification v1.0.
Kind regards,
Henk.

Maybe such a station should transmit the symbols (not "icons"!) in turn and
the client should show them side-by-side? If you filter for either only
EOCs, WX or DIGIs the non-relevant symbols can be hidden. Just an idea...
Kind regards,
Henk.

Hi Ev!
This has been discussed before. It was my understanding that the MAP SYMBOL
that should be transmitted that is to be displayed on a map should represent
that stations primary purpose at that time.

No, this kinda violates the original basis of APRS, beacuse each of these
different position reports would then be considered a "change" from the
previous one, and APRSdos treats NEW or CHANGED information differently
(with more urgency and priority) from OLD non-changing information (one of
the fundamental rules of APRS that some client programs do not do)
So if we want to move to multi-level ICONS, then we wouild need to add
something to the protocol. Which I dont thinnk would be a good idea.
Opening that can of worms would then have some people adding all of these
to their staitions HOUSE, BEAM, HF, ATV, SSTV, IGate, ARES/RACES, SKYWARN
and so on.
I think the original concept of ONE ICON per station (in real time), is
still best... remember, APRS is not designed to be a 24/7 do everything
net. It is supposed to be LIVE and at any instant, the ICON should best
represent what that operator is currently engaged in. If not, then he
should change it. It only takes a few key strokes...

I see where fuel cells are becoming reality soon in the consumer, or at
least, close to consumer, marketplace. So maybe it's time to start
a Fuel Cell discussion in groups that are appropriate.
With power densities, at least for the fuel, approaching 20 times that of
a LiIon battery, they could have lots of promise. But there's a lot of
flies out there too.
But on a technical note, do the new fuel cells have the same issues
the cells of the past had with complicated startup procedures? I
know in the past once started they couldn't just be turned off an on.
But then, in this day and age of uC, I suppose that can be handled
easily. Assuming they have a standby battery source.
Anyone know how they do this?
Any other wierd operational parameters of the new fuel cells that might
impact how we could use them?
Mike

IMHO, they will die a horrible death commercially, because you'll never get
one on a commercial flight.
I know there are other uses, but that's probably the one with the most
money behind it.
There aren't that many people with money, out in the boonies where they
can't use a plug, towed dynamo, or vehicle inverter, or solar panel.
