I agree. As I noted before, the original use of APRS DX spots 10 years
ago was back when all of APRS was USA and so the ONLY calls one ever saw
in APRS DX spots were foreign, and then the concept worked VERY WELL.

Now that I think about it, I think the FIX is simple:

[ If a DX SPOT contains a USA call, then DONT PLOT IT. ]

I would support this rule...as a universal simple immediate patch to
APRS... because I see now that DX spots from EUROPE about USA DX is
messing up the concept...

Yes, but SOME TNC's send all UI packets to BEACON regardless of the
setting of the UNPROTO GPxxxx TOCALL... Which is exactly why this is
needed.

I think it may even be all Kantronics...

Thanks to you all for your responses to my question.

I missed the option for using the KPC3+ because Kantonics does not list the
2 port feature in their specs or instructions - though it is listed as a
version 8.3 "feature". Discovered how to set up the GPS port via a link on
the PocketAPRS site.

See you all down the road.

Perhaps a different solution makes more sense - set a radius around the
current station location where if the DX spot is within the circle
defined by that radius, the DX spot will be ignored - not considered as
DX. And let the user decide what's not DX for them.

Somewhere I obtained a file entitled "APRS Quick Start for the Kenwood
TH-D7A(G)". The document suggests you use the -7 to "let people know you are
using a TH-D7 and the Msg screen is small!!" That maybe why you see -7's
that are not flying around :)

The APRS Spec version 1.0.1 was issued in Aug 2000 and does not appear to
have changed since then. Is there a process to modify/update it? If not,
maybe there should be. The
SSID table sure is a candidate for review.

I totally agree with a different net for DX Spots. I like to use APRS to see
what is around me, not a bunch of random objects.
Combing DX spots and Propnet could create a pretty cool system.

Anyone know why the TNC seems to be constantly setting Unproto?

Subject: aprs balloon tracking in Southern California
From: "Russ Chadwick" <russ@wxqa.com>

X-Message-Number: 35

In about two weeks, there may be an aprs-equipped high altitude balloon
launched from near Ramona, California with recovery near Borrego Springs in
Southern California. If you operate an I-gate within a hundred miles or so
of this area and would be willing to help with aprs tracking to provide near
real-time positions to the FAA, please contact me.

All that is required is to change the frequency of your radio from 144.390
to either 144.340 or 147.555 MHz during the duration of the flight since the
aprs tracker on the balloon will use one of these two frequencies.

This is similar to what we do for Colorado balloon flights. Here is a map
of the I-gates that we used for the last two EOSS flights here in Colorado,

http://www.wxqa.com/IGmapCO.gif

Using data from these I-gates relayed through findu.com, the FAA Denver
ARTCC was able to relay balloon positions to pilots throughout the flight.
They used this page,

http://www.wxqa.com/cgi-bin/balon1.cgi

or this page,

http://www.eoss.org/findu/

Also, could someone who is familar with the FAA VORs in the Southern
California area contact me and tell me the ones that are the most used as
references for aviation around the Ramona, California area. I will use
those in the balloon tracking pages above.

True... Except for those TNC's that dont send UI packets except to the
fixed TOCALL of BEACON (such as an old KPC-3).

But though rare, I do not favor taking something out of APRS that
supports older users if there is no particular beneficial reason to do so.

Placing an ICON on your KIDS PC desktop to shown them "where DAD is" only
takes 3 clicks of a mouse and is so easy I cant believe I just got around
to it!

Yea, I know, I'm too dumb to own a PC....

But bring up MAP.FINDU.COM/YOURCALL and when the page appears:

Right click, select CREATE SHORTCUT
Click on "this will create a shortuct on your desktop"
Then click on the ICON and change its name to "Where's Dad"
wow, that was easy...

We have had APRS in the family for many years, and yet the kids and MOM
have never used it to find dad because "you can take a horse to water but
you can't make him drink..."

But having just ONE desktop ICON click do the whole thing should raise the
ease-of-use factor.

I'm embarassed that I didnt know that configuring a desktop shortcut to
bring up a specific web page was so trivial until now! duh...
