People
I am looking for some WAV recordings of APRS and Packet... I am sure that I
have seen some on the net somewhere... and I would rather not have to
re-invent the wheel if they are freely available.
Many thanks
Darryl

I donot know of a web site, I am sure there are some, perhaps
http://www.rv-coach.com... but in our Airstream motorhome, the standard
configuration is three batteries...
One battery is for the "chassis/engine", then there are two batteries that
are paralled for the "coach/house battteries".
Each system is connected to the charging system thru a battery isolator. I
also have a remote control (relay) that will tie both systems together if
for some reason the chassis battery failed and I could not start the engine
OR the coach batteries failed and I could not start the generator.
The generator will also charge the batteries.
I have a "converter" AKA a power supply for the 12vDC system AND an inverter
for the 110vAC system. I am limited to what I can run off the inverter, I
can run the TV and some lights... mainly because the inverter sucks down
electrons! (if I want to run both roof mounted AC units, I need to fire up
the Onan 7k genny :)
I cannot wait for the next field day :)
I need to get a station set up so I can play radio while driving/riding and
add a RV icon to the map.

There's a good digital modes sampler at http://www.kb9ukd.com/digital/.
Just one 1200 bps AFSK, though. You could always set up AGWPE to generate
some packets, and capture them off the stereo mix... I did that when I was
debugging my tracker, and could also play back WAVs for AGWPE decoding.

This was also common practice for HF fans in the old large vacuum tube days.
Before the smaller tube rigs of the 60's. Older ARRL Handbooks had info on
how to do this.

Sorry to disagree, Bob, but my experience has been the opposite of yours, not
unlike Wes and David. My 2 year-old battery in my van croaked after several
months, from a single deep-cycle discharge due to my tracker. My truck's
battery did the same thing.

And, you may have been lucky. I was not. Twice! As David says, YMMV.
But, for sure car batteries, as a whole, are NOT designed for deep-cycling
at all.

I have had great success with a device sold by West Marine called: BATTERY
COMBINER-50 AMP West Marine item # 143268. It's not cheap $79.99.
Extremely explicit instructions come with the device.
In my case I have 3 station batteries that are charged from either the
alternator or a 3 separate battery charger on my sailboat. This special
charger monitors the #1 battery voltage which controls the stepped charging
current. The other 2 battery's voltage is slightly lower somewhere .5 to .7
volt.
I race my sailboat in long distance open water competitions and
consequently cannot use the prime mover. So I must run the 6KW genset for
20 minutes every 2 hrs to keep the batterys charged. The
autopilot/hydraulic system is a 12volt power hog, consequently I found out
the hard way that my laptop didnot like drops in voltage when the autopilot
made corrections.
As a consequence I installed a 4th, type 27 Marine deep cycle battery that
powers nothing but the laptop, the Icom marine M800 SSB, the Icom VHF M602,
my Kam'98 and GPS. I have this battery connected via the "Combiner" to the
#1 station battery. The laptop must run 24/7 to provide the navigation
course and control to the autopilot. The M800 provides 150 watts of voice
to race officials and once an hour to 30M APRS. Of course we are constantly
badgering back and forth on VHF to our friends on the other sailboats.
I have not had one single dropout since I installed the additional battery
and the Combiner. I don't know precisely how long this additional battery
would last under the loads that are being applied since it is the autopilot
battery that controls the need for charging.
The Combiner is a tad expensive but I can testify it works fantasticly well

I learned something new today about Reversed solar cell damage:
I think everyone who works with solar panels is aware of the shadow effect
which means that a shadow across one cell reduces the power out of the
entire panel as if the whole panel was in shadow (the current out of the
entire series string is no better than the worst illuminated cell).
But what I never realized before is that the shadowed cell then is driven
in reverse, and reverse bias heats the cell and at voltages over 5 volts
can do permanent damage to the cells. This is usually not a problem in 12
volt systems where the difference between the open circuit voltage and the
battery charge voltage is only a few volts (say 18 and 14). But in 28
volt systems, where the open circuit voltage is say 36 to 40 and the
battery is 28, then the shadowed cell will see 8 to 12 volts reverse
voltage, and that is enough to permanently damage the cell.
Fortunately, it takes a while to do it, and since satellites in orbit and
the moving sun for terrestrial cells nominally keeps the shadow moving,
this is not that big a problem. But a drop of bird byproduct that
permanently blocks a cell for long period of time will kill the cell and
the panel...
I knew about the shadow effect, but never realized the potential for
permanent damage.
Just FYI
