As much as I hate another Powerpole thread, I feel it might benefit some to
know that another good source for APPs is www.mcmaster.com , the
McMaster/Carr online catalog. Scroll to the Electrical section and select
"Multipole Connectors", then go to Page 675. At the top of the page you'll
find shells, contacts and complete sets.

At $x.xx (USD) for a 30A shell/contact set ($x.xx at qty 10), I bought a
hundred sets (fifty pairs). And yes, I've used most of them. Usually ship
next business morning -- mine were received in a few days. (This was before
I met Ken, whose www.powerwerx.com is another good source, as already noted
here.)

McMaster/Carr lists a wide variety of industrial items ("over 400,000"), but
they seem to be happy to sell small quantities to individuals, and they
accept credit cards.

The usual "just a satisfied customer" statement applies.

Subject: Shutoff timer?

I know there were some good circuits presented here a while back, and I
can not find the printouts of them..

I am remembering they were NE-555 and would hold a relay closed for
power to the tracker for maybe 3 minutes and then drop out..

Can someone point me to or send me the circuit again??

Thanks in advance,

Robbie

Bob, I must strongly (but politely) object to this idea.

In order for our network hierarchy to work, all digipeaters must repond to
RELAY and some to WIDE. If you alter the expected behavior of RELAY, then
you are effectively cutting off one of my legs. Let me explain... I want a
packet to bounce out three hops in the local RF network. At the first hop
(direct to a WIDE digi), it is possible that my packet could be IGATED and
never digipeated. The network would have just stolen my packet from RF and
guess what.... a path of RELAY is what I had to use just incase I was out
of range of a digi and happened to be in range of a home user. Or it is
possible that my packet will be routed north when I had intended for it to
go south or in all directions.

This becomes a catch 22... a damned it I do, and damned if I don't.... If I
don't use RELAY as my first hop, I may not get into the network, If I do
use RELAY as my first hop, I have a better chance of getting into the
network, but now my packet may be "stolen" away from RF or have it's path
altered so that it does not reach my intended audience. This is a bad
implementation of a good idea.

Since smart digi's such as DIGINED can do preemptive digipeating, why not
use a normal path of RELAY WIDE, and those who want to ensure their packets
get dynamically routed to an IGATE just add IGATE to the end of their
path.... so if I were to intend my packet to go out 3 hops
omnidirectionally, I could use RELAY, WIDE,WIDE , but if I wanted it to get
to an IGATE, I could use RELAY, WIDE,WIDE,IGATE and I would expect that
along the way some smart digi would alter my path. Of course the first
smart digi which saw IGATE in the path could preemptively alter the
path. Meanwhile, I can use the existing "dumb" network infrastructure to
get near a smart digi. And people wishing to NOT have their paths altered
would still be using RELAY in the first hop. People who specifically
include the word IGATE in their path are in effect saying that they desire
their path be changed dynamically.

Also, if you are going to say that it's "legal" or "permissiable" to alter
someone's path if they use RELAY in it (as everyone SHOULD do), then you go
against the philosophy that we can't weed out stupid paths b/c the user
_might_ just know what they are doing. All along you have objected to the
network fixing things and pushed for user education... and now it appears
that you are advocating forcing people to have their paths altered by the
network... taking control away from the users.

Another way which has been suggested in the past (you know who you are, I'm
sorry I can't remember the name), is to say that a packet transmitted with
NO PATH is intended for an IGATE.

Please, please reconsider this one.....

Wes
