Kenwood makes them. Its off the shelf. Its called the Visual
COmmunicator, VC-H1. It like a big speaker-mike that plugs into any RIG
(VHF, UHF, HF, whatever). The VCH-1 includes:
1) Full NTSC standard color Video Camera
2) Full NTSC standard color monitor
3) 10 snapshot memory
4) Character an dcallsign overlays
5) SSTV to NTSC converter
6) NTSC to SSTV converter
and it all fits into a handheld thingy about the size of an HT.
Notice. It IS ALSO a FULL ATV station if you just plug it into an ATV
transmitter. I think Kenwood FAILED miserably in marketing this wonderful
device. They only called it an SSTV thingy. It is MUCH more. Especially
since anyone with a soundcard laptop can now RECEIVE it directly...
This whole concept of integrating APRS and SSTV is under the APRN
(Automatic Picture Relay Network) concept posted on my APRS web page:

Someone asked what would be the correct settings for a DIGI with out
WIDEn-N. SO this is my shot at it:
UIDIGI RELAY,WIDE,SS,XXXX
UIFLOOD OFF
UITRACE OFF
MYALIAS YYYYY
One other thing we should do for OUR network, is to insist that all OLD
WIDE-ONLY digis be REMOVED from service. These do not do
call-substitution and therefore cannot do any DUPE elimination. And we
can no longer afford to use them in our national network.
Notice that by removing any WIDEONLY TNC's we no longer need the
distinction between TRACE and WIDE. Thus we can have another local
UIDIGI call such as for SAR, or your COUNTRY name, or whatever. ALso, the
MYALIAS is available also. (Better check to be sure that your TNC does
callsign substitution on the MYALIAS call.. If it does not, then do NOT
use it)...
In the above list, XXXX and YYYY are available for local use and SS is the
state abbreviation.

Just a note: Look for it on EBay or on clearance from some of the online
vendors. It's a discontinued item. As Bob said, Kenwood did a lousy job
marketing it.

Hi Mark,

I believe we have to quit thinking CHEAP. The difference between CHEAP and
RIGHT is not big. Probably just a few hundred dollars. For far too long
(since the beginning of Amateur Packet) we've done CHEAP and had the
performance we paid for. Let's turn a new leaf, do it RIGHT and make this
work even better.

That's THE step we need to take. Getting something like this that's small
and reliable and robust enough to survive the winter on a mountain top is
going to be the real challenge.
>(this would work with Digi-Ned NOW!)
Right. A few tweaks to Digi-Ned and we'd be in business.

Sorry to bother people with beginner's questions but I am just starting out
in both ham and APRS. I only passed my basic test at the end of August for
a VHF/UHF license.
I will be purchasing an Icom IC-T90A (first weekend of October) and have
already purchased a Garmin eTrex Legend. My computer is Windows XP but
because it is a fairly new laptop it does not have a serial port. I have
not had any luck with serial to USB cables and hubs.
Where to I go from here in getting my basic rig organized and connected to
the computer? What are some software suggestions and what additional
hardware do I need.
I have been searching on the web for a couple of days but most of the things
I have found assume more knowledge than I have.
Thanks and 73.

Plus:
Cheap is boring.
How about a small computer, an antenna no higher than 99 feet per node, and
11 dB of gain, and a baud rate of at least 9600, and four channels of TDMA
synced to the GPS second, using a sound card? Maybe WiFi to the control
station... (Run electric, not coax).
If we build it they will come (tm) :-)
Jo
P.S. The http://www.soekris.com link is pretty neat stuff. Thanks!

I tested this Bob... For a KPC-3+ v8.2 and up.
UIDIGI RELAY,WIDE,TRACE,xxxxx (up to 4)
UIFLOOD disabled,28,NOID
UITRACE disabled,TRACE,29
To change UIFLOOD and UITRACE send UIFLOOD % and UITRACE %. That will
disable all the n-N's from being processed by the tnc. The digi will ignore
all WIDEn-N's and TRACEn-N's. However, will respond to WIDE,WIDE etc. It
will still respond to RELAY's and TRACE. In high traffic areas, it will
sure reduce traffic.
Like I said, I tested this at one local digi (the nearest one to my
location). It basically takes it out of the picture, until locals take the
responsibilty and modify their plug n play WIDE5-5's to something like
RELAY,WIDE,WIDE.
Mobile travelers could use RELAY,WIDE,WIDE2-2. The key would be low-level
local digis running RELAY only.
KISS...
UI-View32 allows your fixed station to function as a low level RELAY digi
in KISS mode. UI-View32 in KISS allows the tnc to act as a modem. All
commands come from program software, not the tnc program. In KISS mode, the
tnc simply passes all received data to the computer. The computer program
is responsible for all processing of that data. The program can make all
decisions concerning routing, digipeating, and other control decisions. The
major advantage operating in KISS is that many old style tnc's understand
KISS. YOU have FULL control from YOUR computer program. Many older tnc's
work great in KISS mode. No need to spend extra bucks for a tnc if you
simply are going to run it in KISS. Besides, you can do far more with
up_to_date APRS programs, than waiting for tnc builders to catch up to our
program technology.
I should also note that UI-View32 should always operate in KISS mode, to
take advantage of the digipeater options and other neat program features.
Did I plug Ui-View enough? <g>. I have operating my Igate with the program
for over a year... I have never seen a program error. The support is
fantastic. The Ui-View forum has over 2300 members on Yahoo. All questions
get answered, usually within minutes. The program author, Roger Barker, is
the forum moderator. It is the best documented program with F1 pop-up help
files everywhere, that pertain to the screen you are on. The latest program
feature is a built-in webserver. http://webserver.kb7zva.com
Enough already :)
