Good point, Mark. One of the biggest communication problems I remember
after the F5 tornado cut across southern OKC was the fact that all the
street signs were gone. An active APRS group would have helped
immensely during the clean-up operations, I am sure (and may have).

We also use APRS positioning as verification of position for many of our
spotters during SKYWARN events. And, of course, positioning is used
extensively during non-emergency public service events.

What are being called nodes, are actually DIGI's in mode cases. I see on
my map 12 nodes in my surrounding area. They are all DIGI's as they do not
have any 'network' interface what-so-ever!

snip!

That is a great example. Voice traffic where it needs to be and tactical
APRS traffic at the same time!
Sure glad you did not try to abuse APRS trying to send the voice traffic
over APRS!!!!

Here's something to look at -- I connected to the KPC-3 in my truck and got
a node listing. I suspect you might get similar results anywhere in the
country. I think two things are happening. First, people are say9ng
"node" when they mean "digi". But second, I think there are quite a few
nodes out there, too.

So....

We have:

Weather Stations
Gaging Stations
Resource Tracking

What else can APRS tactical communications provide?

I use it for keeping track of vehicles such as the Red Cross ERV (by dumb
tracker or objects).
Objects for important sites such as shelters, EOC, functional gas stations,
etc.
Also add info to the Beacon Text such as beds open (Shelter), diesel
availability (Fuel Station),
SMS for ONLY info that needs to be logged, such as the above info plus
anything of importance.
Road closures, downed trees, etc.

Incidentally, none of this type of stuff should be gated to the net in my
opinion, and the paths should be kept short enough to cover just the
affected area.

The visual aspect of APRS makes it a wonderful tool for emergency
management. I just wish I was a little more knowledgeable on some of the
things it can do. I'd like to be able to draw polygons to show affected
areas of tornadoes, floods, chemical emergencies, etc.

Shoot, I'd be more inclined to ask "What can APRS _NOT_ do?"! In all the
courses I've been taking on Emergency Management, I keep telling myself
"APRS can do that!"

OK spider (is that your 'handle?'), A network ties things together. It
is an organized grouping of resources. APRS stations form a network.
Always happy to shed some light, if you have any other definitions I can
look up or provide for ya, drop me a note.

I'm off to go install a NODE for Nextel on their NETWORK.
