guys, I am reading this in digest mode since I was able to become employeed
again. I agree with most of what Pete AE5PL has stated. I am one of the
senior digi operators in the DFW area and am directly responsable for 2 wide
digis and a relay (recently demoted from wide to digi).

I have reduced the beacons on all 3 digis that send the location to 45
minutes with a discrete path (no aliases at all). I pointed that path to
hit the largest coverage digi next to W5NGU-3. W5NGU-3 is a WX station in
addition to a digi and sends WX every 5 minutes. I do not have control over
that timing since it is a t-238 kit. The path for that beacon also is
discrete and goes to a single digi and no further.

I did these mods to W5NGU-3 for 2 reasons, I can hear NGU-3 direct and
happen to be the Denton County IGATE, the digi I bounce the wx and beacon
off of covers most of the DFW area and does not require any further hops.
NGU-3 responds to relay and widen-n.

KC5GOI-11 bounces off only NGU-3 since it is the most north western digi in
north Texas. It gets the users on I-35 into ngu-3 so it can act as a wide.
goi-11 responds to both relay and widen-n.

KC5DPC-3 is the demoted digi and responds to relay only. It bounces only
off of a descrete path as well (ngu-3) when it beacons location and wx data.

My igate is in control of all rf activities at my QTH (goi-1) and has a
descrete path for ngu-3 the w5gdc-15. Not a hope further. I igate out WX
data from my station, specific stations and NWS info via it. Using WIDE
will cause 3 digis to respond and probably collide out, thus the discrete
paths.

I run relay,wide1-1 in my truck, relay, wide on the pocketAPRS setup. This
way I can roam the DFW area and not worry about getting back to the internet
and I know people will hear me. All it takes is 2 hops and Fort Worth hears
me from Allen.

I recently added 4 stations to my LList (version 8.2 roms, earlier roms
require LList and suplist) due to abusive paths. I will not knowingly allow
my digis to pass on abusive paths by other stations. I have the right to do
this as the admin of my digi. I agree with DDOS anology on abusive paths.

I have preached for years now that digis and fixed stations should use
discrete paths. Discrete paths improve your odds of getting out, not to
mention in an orderly fashion.

This is what works in the DFW area. This took time to evaluate and
discussions with the other friendly players. I suggest that people eval
their situations every 6 months or when a new digi appears or one
disappears. What works here may not work anywhere else. Anyone driving in
the DFW area can correctly expect to be able to hit a digi with relay, wide,
widen-n.

I have programmed my digis in the manner due to the overall activity in the
DFW area. We are slammed. 5 watt rigs are getting stomped on. Hidden
trackers are out there and were made hidden trackers due to channel
saturation. I have lost track of how many station are in our area. DFW has
had another growth spurt on APRS. I welcome that increase with open arms.

I have been discussing with the other officers in the DCARA that we should
take our events (with Skywarn being the exception) to a different channel.
Denton County events are already on the touchy edge for coverage and a
saturated channel increases the problems. No were is it stated that every
APRS packet has to be on 4.39. The group in Colorado that had the 2
balloons in July were on 144.34. I am planning to setup the digis to be
switchable. Two are crystal rigs one is not.

Wide and Trace should not be used at the same time. Relayn-n SHOULD fail to
work on a correctly configed digi but I am willing to be someone has placed
relay in the uiflood parameter.

The age old problem in this hobby still exists. How to approach a new user
(not matter if it is a mobile or digi or well intended igate) without
truning them off? I have tried to help newbies just to get the brush off.
I have not given up but the objective is tough to achieve.

How about this scenario:

(EOC frequency) "165 to EOC, I'm 5 west of 170 on Lake Rd. Got a farmhouse
that took a direct hit from the twister. At least 5 injuries with people
trapped. I need Rescue and a couple of ambulances. Advise the battalion
chief he might want to put MediCopter on standby."

"EOC to 165, Rescue, MEDIC -1 and at least 1 ambulance being dispatched at
this time, confirming you are 5 west of 170 on Lake?

"165, 10-4"

In the EOC the amateur radio liaison goes up to the EM director: "Bob, I've
got a ham with APRS out with 165, according to the map screen, he's 5 west
of 170 on Pine Ridge, not Lake."

"EOC to 165, confirm you're on Lake Rd, APRS shows you on Pine Ridge."

"Oh hell, that's right! Yeh, we're on Pine Ridge."

And don't tell me there won't be confusion over locations during a
widespread emergency. I've heard it. You should have heard some of the
radio traffic on law enforcement/public safety frequencies in the Oklahoma
City area the night of May 9th. Our local FD ambulances, RESCUE unit,
paramedics and battalion chiefs have started carrying GPS units so they can
provide accurate locations. APRS is a step better for us hams.

Yes, 1200 bauds is correct.

BTW, I think this is the last day of 100% solar illumination until the
next period 16-31 December,

Go look at Google for the NANOG user mailing list - north american network
operators group. It went from a dribble of messages to a flood gate
breaking in minutes once this went public. I have no idea how Verisign
could ever keep this in place.

Sorry to be off topic, Mr Moderator, but this is, as noted, almost too hard
to believe.

I agree whole-heartedly, Greg. I guess your posts states in much better
words what I was trying to get across in my posts. Making blanket
statements as "facts" or "rules" to apply to the operating procedures
for all areas of the country or world just doesn't make sense. Every
area has different goals and different needs and those should be taken
into account by that area's operators.

Well said.
