The reason for the all 0's is that it gives you more clock edges to
sync to, so you can sync up more quickly on the receive side. Some
TNC's send zero's, some send flags, which I found out when I was
playing at that level some years ago, also with an XR2211.

Yeah, that makes sense... it's just not the way it's described in the spec.

At this point, the digital waveform coming out of the decoder looks to be
the same as the one for the KPC-3 output, so I'm getting close. The FCS is
correct, everything matches up bit for bit with the KPC-3, but it still
doesn't decode in AGWPE. Either the timing is off a bit or there's
something else I'm overlooking. The frequencies can't be too far off
because the 2211 gets it just fine, and the spectrum compares closely with
the KPC-3. Maybe it's time to invest in a real digital storage 'scope.

If anyone wants to take a look at the packet, it's at
http://www.opentrac.org/test.wav. By setting a radioport on AGWPE to the
stereo mix input, you can have it decode locally generated audio. If anyone
can tell me what's wrong with this signal, I'll buy you a beer at the next
DCC. I'm calling it quits for tonight, though.

I sent this email to k4mqf at the address reqistered at QRZ and it
bounced... maybe someone in his local area could talk to him?

***********************************************************************
I copied this packet at 4am local time....

K4MQF-2>APRS,KD4ZB-3*,WIDE4-3,TRACE4-3,qAS,KD4BNQ-1:!3811.19NN07746.02W#PHG8
440 Spotsylvania, Va Digi_2

Why do you have the trace in there? Shouldn't you run either wideN-N or
traceN-N ?

I see this kind of thing all the time as I travel the USA. I agree, it
would be better to run one or the other, but it seems to be impossible to
get everybody together on this.

The worst examples are things like WIDE7-7,TRACE6-6, and I see those out
there, too.

The following was the first packet received on the PCSat 1206z pass over
the UK:-

12:07:50R KB1GVR>APU16K,PCSAT-1* Port=1 <UI Len=36>:
=4436.18N/06826.92W-Hello via PCSAT

The Station List showed the following details:-

Callsign Type Latitude Longitude Miles Bearing Last Heard
-------- ---- -------- --------- ----- ------- ----------
-KB1GVR* Home 44.36.18N 068.26.92W 3045.8 288 Sep 15 12:07

I wasn't in the shack at the time so was unable to reply.

Not bad for a little old bird! :-)

Why is an object for current hurricanes that have the potential to threaten
the US (or anywhere) not uplinked by someone such as the NHC or HWN?

I know that there are plenty of places on the net as well as NOAA/NWS Radio
to find this info so please don't waste your time telling me about them.
However these online products are not an option if all you have with you
while mobile is an HT/TNC & GPS or in an area with poor reception of NWS
Radio, and yes, there are places along the coast (like Cumberland county in
SNJ) that the NWS acknowledges have poor coverage.
