Java, wonderful stuff. Cross platform independance, farout!

But... the language compiles to a virtual code. You need a Java VM (virtual
machine) to interpret the virtual code. So it runs on any computer
that you have a VM for. But as the VM interprets the code it's not quick.
Also, the language can access the hardware. You need to have extensive
libraries that provide the hardware access functions, these are normally
written in C/C++ for each machine/OS. Of course the libs provide the
same functionality for each machine so you can run graphics code on say a
Sun or a PC or a PDA.

Cross platform portability is cool but has it's price. I use it as I
cant be bothered to learn Windows programming. I can write most
of what I need in Java and run it on either my Linux or Windows machines
without worrying.

If you want to leanr more, (and there's lots and lots and lots) check out
the original source... http://java.sun.com
