Subject: An HF mystery solved.

If you spend a good deal of time playing on the HF bands you will have heard
all sorts of noises. One probably more than most will be a Russian
ionosonde "chirpsounder".

It doesn't sound anything like the usual ionosonde and can easily be mistaken
for locally generated crud !

Have a look at www.signals.taunus.de and scroll to the chirpsounder section.

The link is called RUS-CHIRP.

Then download the CIS chirpsounder .wav file (76.6Kb).

The chances are you've heard it many a time without even realising it !
