The best Website for information on Radio Australia is under Australian
Broadcasting Corporation. It lists 9.475 as directed to Asia but
"sometimes heard in Europe". The Website has a complete list of
frequencies, times and target areas, which are mainly in Asia.It also
states that there are relay stations in some foreign countries. There is
also a broadcast on Satellite3.
There is no information that I can find on that site about the location of
the stations, but I believe that the high powered station is still located
at Shepperton in Victoria, the HQ of Radio Australia. I am told too that
there are still transmission sites at Tennant Creek and Katherine in the
Northern Territory running about 50 KW targeting neighbouring countries,
Indonesia etc..The Telstra White pages give a telephone number in
Kununurra in the Kimberlies for Radio Australia. I rang that number and
was assured that it was "certainly not Radio Australia". Apparently a
local station with a fancy name.I have been unable to find any other
information from Telstra about phone listings which seems rather strange.
The site at Carnarvon is no longer active and has not been for some years.
Datwin is also closed. Certainly the Carnarvon buildings and a huge
antenna farm are still there. From memory of my last visit to Carnarvon
the antennas are directional wire antennas. The site has several acres of
wires. Whether Lyndhurst is active now I would not know but I cannot find
any reference to it. Perhaps someone in Victoria could confirm.
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE.
