"Pion". Not heard a chess piece called that before Phil. An interesting
word. Mexican\Spanish "Peon", English "Peasant". No doubt there are
variations in other tongues. I do not know what the origin was, the root
word, possibly "pe" or "on" means something in Latin to denote one working
for another perhaps? Chess. Invented in Persia, modern-day Iraq. The
denouement or final move being "Checkmate", allegedly from the Persian
"Chakamat" (Sic) meaning "The King is dead". My father taught me how to
play it over 45 years ago. I gained great enjoyment from playing it
although no expert, I spent many hours learning some of the intricacies of
the fine game. I even bought an electronic version some years ago. Sadly,
now I do not play as time gets shorter and more things take up my time.
Not many play it these days I feel. Good luck.
