The singer was Charlie Drake, a little fat comedian with a high pitched
voice. The line in the song which,maybe, annoyed a few Brits back then
was:
"I'm a big disgrace to the Aborigine race,
My boomerang won't come back."
No one saw it as any big deal back then. The song was mildly funny. Things
have changed a lot since those days and it would probably be banned now.
On that topic, a South African folk singer, I forget his name, decided to
move to England. The story goes that, before they would let him in he had
to make a public apology for his song which went "Ach dedi ev we muss;
niggah bols und liquoruss" a song about two little boys nagging their
father for some sweets popular in SA at the time.
I expect the song is still stored in an archive somewhere but modern UK
rules on the crime of 'racism' would get someone a big fine and a jail
sentence if they attempted to play it.
There's a thought, do they talk about "Native Australians" in Oz now?
p.s. Apologies for my attempt to write the words to the song. I only ever
heard it and can't write Afrikaans - mijn Afrikaans is niet so goed.
