Over time the conductive surface can wear away. Sometimes conductive deposits
end up over the tracks causing problems or as in your case, they just stop
being conductive enough to work.

It's worth keeping old remotes simple to use as a donor of conductive bits etc.
although your fix seems elegant. 

You didn't fancy using the duff remote as a reason to upgrade to some monster
