ANTARCTICA/GERMANY Guten Morgen!
stoerungsfrei hier an. Im Log habe ich folgende Stationen notiert:

Datum: 2. August 2009

Observatorien bieten.

ARGENTINA Nautel to Provide Eighteen 25 kW Transmitters to Argentina.

Hackett's Cove, Nova Scotia Nautel Limited has been selected by Radio
Nacional de Argentina to provide eighteen NX25 AM transmitters for
locations in provinces across the country. Delivery of the transmitters
began last month and will continue through early 2010.

The Nautel NX25 leverages Nautel's advanced NX AM transmission platform to
provide a 27.5 kW (maximum) power output in a compact footprint. Offering
industry leading efficiency, outstanding linearity and robust solid state
construction, the NX25 offers exceptional reliability and low maintenance.
The company's exclusive Advanced User Interface provides an onboard
instrument grade spectrum analyzer and full control both locally and
remotely using a web browser.

Radio Nacional de Argentina selected the NX25 for its transmitters in
Bariloche, Santa Rosa, Esquel, San Juan, Santo Tome, Viedma, Santa Fe,
Tucuman, Bahia Blanca, San Salvador de Jujuy, Rio Turbio, Catamarca, Rio
Grande, Salta, La Rioja, Formosa, Mendoza, and Santiago del Estero.
"Nautel is thrilled to work with Radio Nacional de Argentina on this
important project," said Gerardo Vargas, Nautel's Latin America Sales
Manager. "Their choice of the NX25 confirms Nautel's ability to provide
robust, reliable transmitters for locations ranging from coastal urban
centers to remote mountain locations."

11133.5 While scanning the bands, I ran into a Spanish language program
on 11133.5 LSB. I heard several Radio Continental IDs and a web site
address in .com.ar, so it appears that the Argentinan 11 MHz feeder
program has moved to 11133.5 LSB.

Pretty good signal into New Hampshire at 2300 UTC on Jul 30.

AUSTRALIA 2368.486 Radio Symban, 1215, Surprised to find this with non-
stop Greek vocals. Either tracking CD's or running a loop, no
announcements heard. Excellent S9+50 but I'm only 900 km's from the xmtr
site in metro Sydney. 30 July.
(David Sharp-NSW-AUS, dxld July 30)

Radio Symban - new site?
My thanks to Mauno Ritola for advising me that Radio Symban, Australia
might now be back on the air on 2368.5 kHz.

I was able to hear this station 24 hours ago & it is still running a test
broadcast now.

A few months a go I advised that this station, according to ACMA radio
frequency records, had changed registered SW TXer sites from Peats Ridge
(Gosford) to Marrickville (Sydney, suburb). This "appears" to have now
happened and the station is now back on air.

Today I received a email confirmation from the station advising that they
are indeed on air, but testing with 50 W only - I presume that this site
of Marrickville (Victoria Lane) is correct, but as no accuracy of site
coordinates is specified on government frequency register so the site
could be anywhere around the general area. The station also didn't confirm
the site, but says they hope to go to full power very soon.
(Ian Baxter-AUS, SW TXsite July 30)

Thank you very much for your email. We are extremely delighted by your
report and comments and we must admit we are very surprised that our
signal was heard in your part of the world considering we are in test mode
for a few days and are only transmitting at 50 Watts. There is nothing
else attached to the system as yet, which causes us to strongly believe
that our new aerial and when our new transmitter is connected soon to
replace the 50 Watt, we expect big things. Please stay tuned as there is
big changes due to Radio Symban, we are sure you will know when this
happens. Again many thanks and we look forward in hearing from you.
Enjoy...

Regards, Angelo, Radio Symban - Sydney Australia.
(Ron Howard-CA-USA, dxld July 30)

R. Symban 2368.50 kHz. I'm hearing the Sydney Greek station Radio Symbam
back on the air, on 2368.5 kHz. A good signal here in Northland NZ at 0708
UTC today, 30 July, and very good at 1930 UTC recheck.

BANGLADESH Bangladesh BETAR disposes old SW & MW transmitters.

Bangladesh Betar has issued tender notice to dispose off two of its
transmitters: 100 kW MW, Make: RCA , Model: BTH-100B 100 kW SW, Make:
Continental, Model: 418A-1

Both these transmitters served the Shavar transmission centre of
Bangladesh Betar. The SW transmitter was presently non-operational, as per
TDP this was installed in the year 1968.
(Alokesh Gupta-IND, dxld July 23)

BENIN I received the following information from James Burnett, the
regional Engineer for TWR Africa, regarding the status of the TWR
shortwave relay in Benin:

There is not much progress yet on getting the Shortwave from Benin going.
We are presently waiting for the powers that be to grant us a license and
then, Lord willing we hope to proceed. The 100 Kilowatt AM station on 1566
kHz is running well. So this is still a year or two away.

currently off air. Weak signals noted this morning.

CHINA At 1516, on July 25, found most of the CNR-1 echo jamming
frequencies were also accompanied by Firedrake music. 9455 (RFA), 9670
(VOA), 11585 (RFA), 11625 (RFA), and 12025 (RFA) all had both FD and echo
CNR-1. Heard solo CNR-1 echo jamming on 7130 (RTI), 7185 (RTI) and 12110
(VOA). Solo FD on the usual 8400, 9000, 13970, 14430 and 15150.

At 1414, on July 28, noted strong Firedrake combined with CNR-1 jamming on
11990 and 12040, both against VOA.
(Ron Howard-CA-USA, dxld July 26/28)

ChiCom jamming check July 26: at 1235 on 15255, echoing CNR1 ID, no sign
of victim, VOA Chinese via Philippines, except SAH which could as easily
have been between two jamming transmitters; then xylophone music.

At 1237, Firedrake alone, poor on both 8400 and 9000. At 1308 also poor on
13970, 1310 just barely audible on 14430. 1354 good on 15150 and \\ the
Firedrake portion of 12040.

Back at 1308, found CNR1 PLUS Firedrake on 12040, good signals also
against VOA Chinese via Tinang. Usually we don't hear both CNR1 and
Firedrake jamming on same frequency, but Ron Howard first reported such
mixtures July 25.

At 1350 on 11805 also CNR1 plus Firedrake. No echo from CNR1, however, so
perhaps the echoer was switched to Firedrake audio feed. 11805 is yet
another VOA Chinese outlet, this time via Thailand, as like a spoiled
child, the ChiCom yell as loud as they can to keep from hearing what they
desperately need to hear; meanwhile their own slanted side is pervasive
and unimpeded on SW into the USA tnx to their Canadian comrades.

Firedrake July 27: at 1313 fair on 8400, and also at 1319 on 9000. At 1329
nothing audible on 13970; at 1334 very poor with flutter on 14430 and
15150, no other solo Firedrake heard. But Firedrake mixed with CNR1
jamming was again the case at 1324 on 12040 and at 1326 on 11805. CNR1-
only jamming at 1327 on 11785 mixing with target also in Chinese.

Firedrake check July 28: at 1247 on 8400 and better on \\ 9000. At 1308
poor on 14430, better on 13970, best on 15150. At 1311 on 17470 about
equal to 15150. At 1315 also good on 11300 \\ 15150 and still at 1354.
11300 is more erratic, but when it's on must wreak havoc on East African
aero communications, including probably Chinese planes trying to contact
ATC, but it's far more important to the ChiCom that Sound of Hope be
jammed, than aeronautical safety be enhanced. At 1358 Firedrake fair on
13500, another non-daily one; and believe I heard a brief snatch of FD
around 15412 but went off at 1359 before I could downpin it; there was a
het, and previously has blocked V. of Tibet varying around here.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld July 28)

Firedrake music noted at 1230 UT on 13970, 14430, and 15150 kHz against
Sound of Hope TWN program.

Against RFA Mandarin at 1500-1700 12025 kHz, 1600-1800 UT 11795.
Against RFA Tibetan at 1600-1800 11585 kHz. July 29.

Another buzzy distorted audio, like odd satellite feed frequency noted
against Orzu-TJK relay, RFA Tibetan program 1500-1600 UT, and RFA Uyghur
1600-1700 UT.

5030.00 China National Radio One, 1030-1045, Noted a male and female in
Chinese Language comments. Signal was threshold during the period, but
checked 6175 kHz and noted \\ program, so this helped pull out the signal
on 5030 kHz. Was hoping to hear Malaysia here, but that never happened.
China was fair by 1045.

6175 China National Radio One, 1040-1050 With steady Chinese language
comments from a male and female. Much of this sounds like news with break
aways to other individuals who comment. Signal here was fair and mixing
with a Portuguese language station which turned out to be WYFR which went
off the air at 1045. Much better, since China is in the clear now with a
good signal.

6150 China National Radio One, 1047-1055 Thought I'd check this freq to
see what China was doing here? Noted a \\ signal with 6175 kHz here. CNR1
was the dominate station on this freq, but a second station underneath is
heard, which probably is Taiwan? CNR1 is definitely doing its' job if they
are here to block Taiwan.

No. 3 in Xianyang nahm am 21.

DXern in Mitteleuropa beobachtet.

Mittelwellensender.

Maybe Alan know the Kunming details ?
Image looks like of site with 3 independent frequency masts ...
WRTH list show 990, 1088, and 1242 kHz also.
(wb, SW TXsite July 25)

I m not sure what other frequency/ies this site transmits, actually. I
suspect WRTH is wrong to list 990 kHz for this, but the other two that
Wolfgang mentions are possiblities, as well as Kunming PBS 1350 kHz.

Wolfgang's e-mail prompted me to have another look for the Yunnan PBS
shortwave site (Yunnan No 7 Transmitting Station) at Shalang, and voila I
think: now high resolution in
G.E. at 25 09 53 N 102 40 41E
with some modest SW antennas to the north-east. This must be the site for
6035 kHz towards Vietnam and 6937 kHz towards remote parts of Yunnan.
(Alan Davies-INS, SW TXsite July 25)

Nice SW find - thank you. I didn't know about this station reference (i.e
(Yunnan No 7 Transmitting Station) at Shalang or the Shalang name. In the
Excel files I obtained the name of Lantau for this site from an article
that the PTWBR did in one recent edition. I never did find the location of
Lantau though.

Do you know how long has these SW domestic freqs been in use for from this
location? The reason I ask is that on G.E. the SW antennas aren't seen in
the Dec 11, 2002 image, but then the image clarity of this earlier image
isn't the best either, maybe the antennas are there ... ???
(Ian Baxter-AUS, SW TXsite July 25)

I'm sure 6035 and 6937 have been in use since before year 2000. And I seem
to recall there used to be another weird frequency around 6.9 MHz.

Recent data from China suggests 6937 kHz should be 20 kW ND while 6035 kHz
is 100 kW 147 deg. Just possibly the antennas nearest to the building that
look like small curtain arrays could be recent additions for Jamming
purposes.
(Alan Davies-INS, SW TXsite July 25)

Dec 11, 2002 image shows dimly the antenna mast, but suffers by sunset
colour ... Best image of Sept 20, 2007, but SITE was much, much earlier on
air? Let's say 1967 - 1970 era...

History of 70ties:
MALAYSIA History - A few points on some of the inactive stns.

Voice of Malayan Revolution/Voice of Malayan Democracy.
The correct name of the original party was the Communist Party of Malaya.
The CPM did not initially recognise the division of MLA and SNG into
separate states in 1965 and kept the name it had used since the time of
the British Empire, referring to both territories. The CPM later split
with the second group calling itself the Malaysian Communist Party.
However this second party also split. I will check my records on this
later to see which group bc Voice of the People of Malaysia.

Also according to the writer Bertil Lintner "During the 1970s, S The
Communist Party of Malaya's Suara Revolusi Malaya ("Voice of the Malayan
Revolution") bc from Hengyang south of Changsha in Hunan province", not
Kunming as stated, the party had offices in Kunming but the tx was
elsewhere. Perhaps this was also the case with the CP of Thailand's Voice

I guess heard here in Europe on 6670 and 8998 kHz then, wb.

DX history of 2003:
CHINA/MALAYA CHIN PENG'S MEMOIRS ON THE VOICE OF THE MALAYAN
REVOLUTION.

Chin Peng, the former Secretary General of the Communist Party of Malaya
published his memoirs recently. Chin Peng joined the Communist Party just
before World War II. After the war, he assumed the leadership position in
the party. It was while he was party leader that the 12 year Emergency was
declared in all of Malaya (1948 to 1960). For the communists, this
amounted to nothing less than a declaration of war by the "enemy". They
were soon forced to operate underground. This not only meant that members
have to conduct their activities in a clandestine manner. In the
environment of anti-colonial liberation wars at that time, it also meant
that the communists were to form armed units which would operate from the
jungle against govt targets.

Chin Peng devoted almost one chapter of his memoirs to explain the
operation of the CPM clandestine radio station, the "Voice of the Malayan
Revolution" or "Suara Revolusi Malaya". Chin Peng had first sought the
help of the North Vietnamese to establish his clandestine station in 1963
as the Communist Party of Thailand was already operating their clandestine
station, the "Voice of the Patriotic Front" from there since 1961.

The Vietnamese agreed to the request, but suggested that Chin Peng seek
help from either China or East Germany to provide the transmitting
equipment. Chin Peng explained that as the Sino-Soviet split was already
fully manifesting itself at that time, it would be prudent to request help
from China. China did not agree to the request initially. It would take
six years before the Voice of the Malayan Revolution came on air.

Chin Peng says that the station commenced broadcasting from a military
area in Hunan province in China in November 1969 using a 20 kW tx on two
"wavelengths". Initially, the station broadcasts in Mandarin, Malay and
Tamil with three announcers for each section. Chin Peng claims that the
announcers were not members of his party and that the broadcasts were well
received by communist members and sympathisers in Malaya and SNG (hmm,
does this mean he received reception reports?).

Later on, the station received requests for broadcasts to be aired in
various Chinese dialects. Chin Peng did not say what other dialects were
added (I had seen a TV clip from that era which featured a broadcast in
Cantonese). At its peak, the station employed 30 announcers.

China was at this time in the throes of the Cultural Revolution. Despite
this, the station received regular deliveries of Malaysian and SNG
newspapers in English and Chinese, as well as "The Times" of London, the
Melbourne "Age", "The Economist", "Asiaweek", "Time" and "Pacific
Affairs". Amazingly, children of station staff continue to receive
academic education even though all other schools were closed in China at
this time.

The station's broadcast continued without incident until 1980. In that
year, Lee Kuan Yew, who was then Prime Minister of SNG had visited Beijing
in what many view as a very successful meeting with Chinese leaders. It
turned out that Lee had requested Deng Xiaoping to shut down the station
as soon as possible. Vietnam had invaded Cambodia a year earlier.

The ASEAN countries had supported the participation of the Khmer resistant
movement in the United Nations although the US was against it. ASEAN was
trying to lobby support from African and South American countries for its
Cambodian resolution and it was felt that it would be a difficult task
unless the station stopped operating from China. In the circumstance, Chin
Peng could only accede to his host's request. The Voice of the Malayan
Revolution aired its last broadcast from China on the evening of June 30,
1981.

That is not the end of the station. It commenced broadcasts using a mobile
tx from the Thai-Malaysian border the following morning using a new
callsign - "Suara Demokrasi", the Voice of Democracy.

Suara Demokrasi was to broadcast for another few years. On December 2,
1989, the Communist Party of Malaya signed peace treaties with the
Malaysian and Thai govts, ending more than 40 years of rebellion. Under
the terms of the treaty, the party would be disbanded and the radio
station would cease broadcasts within one month. Chin Peng did not say
when the final broadcast was aired.

Chin Peng's autobiography "My Side of History", edited by Ian Ward and
Norma Miraflor is published by Media Masters in SNG 2003.

RNE sendet
bereits jetzt vom heimatlichen Kurzwellenzentrum Noblejas (Toledo) vier

Ausstrahlung.

Offizielle Einweihung war am 18. April 1991. Nach Angaben von
Stationsleiter Edgar Esquivel sendet man derzeit in drei Sendestrecken 12

INDONESIA 4750 RRI Makassar, 0955-1020 UT. Noted music until 0958 UT
when a male and female comment in Indonesian language. At 1000 UT the
Qu'ran is presented by a male. This continues until 1005 UT. At 1006 UT a
female begins to comment. Her comments sound political from the tone. The
signal remains fair until about 1014 UT when it really peaks to a good
level. At that time music is being broadcast.

9680 RRI Jakarta, at 1007-1020 UT, Noted steady music from tune in. Some
comments and canned promos between the tunes. Signal is good.

9525 Voice of Indonesia, at 1010-1020 UT, Noted a very weak signal here
this morning. Can barely a male in comments, and not sure what language
his is using either. Signal was threshold.
(Chuck Bolland-FL-USA, hcdx July 26)

4749.93 RRI Makassar, 1000-1015, Signal has faded in completely yet, but
noted a person in Qu'ran type reciting. At 1004 UT a male comments in
Indonesian language. Again at 1008 more Qu'ran reciting Finally, at 1012 a
female opens the broadcast with comments and music. In the meantime, the
signal is fading in from a poor to a fair.
(Chuck Bolland-FL-USA, hcdx July 30)

4749.95 RRI Makassar, July 29, 0950 - weak signal at tune in, but rapidly
strengthening to fair levels as 1006 UTC sunrise in Makassar and 1107
sunrise in Memphis. Female announcer until 1000 UTC ID, then recitations
from the Qu'ran lasting until 1012. Female announcer back playing songs,
male with long monologue from 1030. ID by female at 1100 then news.

After poor African and LA conditions noted this morning, this was a nice
surprise. Other possible 60 m.b. Indo signals observed: very presumed RRI
Wamena carrier on 4869.93 and tentative RRI Jambi on 4925 with occasional
threshold audio, hampered by CODAR and much stronger R. Educacao Rural
4925.25 with prompt *1000 UTC sign on.

Thanks for your observations! Nice to see a log of Makassar with the exact

often even at Asilomar Beach.

3976.056 RRI Pontianak, 1310, pop vocals, discussion between a man and a

This part of the band is pretty "sloppy" with white noise and bubble
jammers but this was still readable in LSB. 30 July.

KENYA The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) is to stop using short
and medium wave frequencies so as to save on costs, writes Dennis Itumbi
for journalism.co.za. Information Permanent Secretary Dr Bitange Ndemo
said the frequencies were consuming too much power and were already
overtaken by technological advances.

The national broadcaster has also committed to reduce its power bills by
at least Shs. 25 million ($330,000) as a way of dealing with its debts.
After a meeting with the Parliamentary committee on Energy, Communication

conducted so as to make it more competitive.

HLA on 5000 kHz has not been audible in Japan, so there is a possiblity of
the tranmission stop. But there is no mention about this in their Korean
homepage.

As for thier QSL, please have a look at my homepage

60 kHz radio-watches, sold in Japan, are also usable in South Korea. Then
generally there seems to be the less need for standard time signal on
shortwave.

National Association of Shortwave Broadcasters <www.shortwave.org> die

weltweiten Kurzwellensendungen miteinander abgeglichen.

(Dr. Hansjoerg Biener-D, ntt Aug 1)

9530 DWL DRM, maybe test of reception in HFCC conference location
Dominican Republic.

In

SUDAN/UGANDA 4740/4750 During a routine maintenance and resupply trip
this week, the Radio Peace technical team plans to fine tune both of the
transmitters which carry Christian broadcasts to tens of thousands of
people in South Sudan, southern Darfur, the Nuba Mountains and North
Sudan.

In the process, engineer Livingstone Kiniaru will change the frequency of
the 4750 kHz shortwave transmitter to 4740 kHz to avoid an interference
problem that has been created by another broadcaster in the neighboring
country of Uganda. This rather simple adjustment will allow the Radio
Peace programs to be heard clearly in five languages once again across its
coverage area in South Sudan and southern Darfur.

Pray that this technical procedure will be successful and that both
Livingstone and mechanic Sam Sele will have safe travel to and from Radio
Peace this week. Also, pray for our transmitter operators and security
crew who live at the broadcast facility in South Sudan.

Auslandsdienstes.

Bei einem Aufenthalt bei Radio Damaskus hatte Kris Janssen Gelegenheit zu
einem Interview mit Asad Zarai, dem Chefingenieur der Kurzwellenstation
des syrischen Auslandsdienstes in Adra.

Frage: Radio Damaskus benutzt heute verschiedene Plattformen zur
Verbreitung seiner Programme: Kurzwelle, Mittelwelle (fuer Hebraeisch und
Russisch), Satellite (Hotbird, Arabsat, Nilesat) und seit kurzem Internet
<www.syriaonline.sy/radio.php>

Frage: Wie viele Kurzwellensender stehen denn eigentlich in Adra? Asad

Frage: Mit welcher Leistung?

UKRAINE/Former USSR History. Remember "Soviet Woodpecker"

Hallo!

Empfangsanlagen.

VIETNAM 4739.60v Radio Son La had been one of the stations I regularly
heard about every day, before their usual 1400 UT sign-off time, but as I
observed in Feb. and reported again in April, they were not on-the-air
back then. This is still the case now. I have not heard them at all during
random checks in the 1245 to 1400 UT time period. Last actual log I had
for them was back on Jan. 30, 2009. Has anyone heard them during any other
time period, after mid-February?
