AFGHANISTAN Kandahar has me extremely busy, and I have little to no
spare time, even for dx'ing. I am going on three weeks' annual leave on
the 23rd, and will probably be heading back down to Kandahar on August
18th. Hopefully I will be able to start DXing again then. The rockets and
suicide bombs are intensifying down there and with the elections
nationwide around the 20th of August, things are gonna really get hairy.

On a side note, remember the pictures I sent of the Radio Solh antenna and
towers in Kandahar? Well, they have been completely dismantled and taken
away. Radio Solh there was been replaced by a propaganda FM station (don't
have the info at hand, will email it when I get back down to Kandahar).

AZORES [and non] Acores, 909 kHz, R. Club de Angra and 1566 Estacao
Emissora do Club Asas do Atlantico (plus R. Altitude, Guarda, here on
mainland) will most probably lose their MW permits, i.e. if the decision
hasn't been taken into force, on grounds of non-use of their frequencies.

Radio Lajes - A Voz da Forca Aerea Portuguesa, will hopefully be back on
MW soon, though neither on its previous, inactive, outlet on 648 kHz (was
650 kHz at least in the mid~late 70s) nor on the one shown in their
website, i.e. 1530 kHz, which was the frequency they originally planned to
move to. It's going to be on 1584 kHz, where the station seemed to have
operated in the past too. Power will again be 1 kW via the old, idle
transmitter.

Part of their future plans include DRM operation on MW via a new
transmitter and VHF-FM power increase from the current 0.150 kW PEP to 0.5
kW PEP. Besides that, split operation will be an option, i.e. VHF- FM,
internet and MW all carrying different channels albeit including some
relays of R. Renascenca, and with sport being carried via MW.

R. Lajes' audience is not confined to the Lajes airbase personel, nor to
Lajes or even Praia da Vitoria, the nearest town, but to the whole island
of Terceira at least:

BULGARIA Could you, please, help me to identify the location of two
transmitter sites on the photos, which I found on
<http://www.radiopanam.com/europe.htm> ? Thank you in advance.
(Lev Lytovchenko-CAN, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews July 14)

This Pan Am Broadcasting website and two picture images originate from
2006, and we discussed that location few years ago in DXers circle. But
the images doesnt fit with the known site photos.

At present PAB uses M&B sites in Germany like JUL, NAU and WER. But all
these are of different mast gear and look different. So, the 2 fotos have
nothing to do with the PAB transmitting sites.

150 kW is the power which uses Rimavska Sobota, but the G.E. image in
Slovak Rep looks totally different.

that 259 degrees antenna is visible in same USSR design, which was erected
during USSR-Sowjetunion era at Sitkunai on Lithuanian SSR. It's the same
type of antenna mast design.

But I gues maybe the two photos in question taken from Kostinbrod Bulgaria
site ? ? I guess the puzzle fit by 95%.

What was a pleasure to solve finally this problem! Thank you for so quick
response and for sending me the information. I found one of the pictures
identical to #1 in Kostinbrod Tx and #2 taken from different view angle.
So these pictures were taken in Kostinbrod, Bulgaria. But did ever
European Gospel Radio (EGR) transmit via Bulgaria for Europe? Why did they
put these photos as an illustration of their transmitter site? I have some
very blurry pictures (from YouTube) of antenna field in Rimavska Sobota
and I could compare their masts with the EGR. Yes, they look very similar
to the Soviet ones.

But in Rimavska Sobota between self-supported towers there are some tall
and thin masts. Definitely the pictures weren't taken from there. Actually
I would like to get some good quality photos of Rimavska Sobota Tx site.
Ones again thank you very much. Regards from Canada.

SWR2 Forum - Zum Beispiel China - Warum kleine Voelker aufbegehren.

FRENCH GUIANA 9790 / 9935 YFR.
Checking out a tip from Tarek Zeidan, Denmark of a religious station on
new 9935 kHz, July 12 around 2200 UT, I found 9935 kHz still going at 2340
UT check with Family Radio ID in passing, web promo. It must be brand new,
not in any listings, nor I think this time, in any update from WYFR via
dxld.

Following Brazilian reports of Family Radio on unlisted 9855 kHz in the
0000-0100 UT period July 15, I looked for it 24 hours later, starting at
2359 UT July 15: the tests via GUIANA FRENCH on 9790 and 9935 kHz were not
yet on, as Sackville DRM was ending on 9790 kHz, then weak signal on 9790
kHz and by 0001 UT July 16 \\ 9935 kHz was also on. This was about Family
Radio, but not the all-Harold Camping stream, which was even weaker on
Ascension 9835 \\ 7335 kHz. But nothing on 9855 kHz.

I thought I heard the announcer refer to "the late Harold Camping", but
surely not! He's got to last until at least Oct. 20, 2011. Googling for a
new obit, I instead found several sites by irate 'true Christians'
claiming Camping runs a cult with Family Radio, e.g.:
<http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/Wolves/harold_camping.htm>

Recheck at 0014 UT in case anything changed: no, still nothing on 9855
kHz.

Oops, word just in from Adalberto Marques de Azevedo: Previous logs should
have been reported as 9935, not 9855 kHz. Never mind. We already know that
9935 and 9790 kHz are via French Guiana.

GERMANY - THIRD REICH Several days ago I was recording FM signals here
in Subotica, and I heard interesting segment in the show called "Time
Mosaic" on Radio Belgrade 1. These segments are from that radio-show...

Every Wednesday and Saturday evenings from March 1941 till February 1943
the German Radio (Nazi propaganda) was transmitting musical program
"Charlie and His Orchestra" on short and medium waves intended to
listeners in Canada, USA and England.

You can download these 3 short mp3 files:

- Announcement (the beginning of the show)
- "Who's Afraid of The BBC"
- "A Man With The Big Cigar"

Here is the address: <http://www.radio4all.net/index.php/program/33412>
(Dragan Lekic-SRB, dxld 15 May)

Charlie and His Orchestra is a fascinating story. My buddy the late Brian
Smith and I avidly collected all sorts of WW2 audio, and have many of the
different arrangements by Karl Schwedler aka Charlie.

While jazz and other "degenerate music" was banned officially in the Third
Reich, Goebbel's propaganda ministry put together this band to appeal to
Allied tastes while delivering a defeatist message.

The propaganda is rather ineffective and heavy handed, anecdotal accounts
suggest Churchill found them hilarious. The music itself is top notch ...
they were all accomplished musicians. In a later era one might suggest
that they "rocked".

You can download many of them at
<http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=Charlie%20and%20His%20Orchestra>

Note: I don't know who posted them but Charlie/Karl was NOT executed by
the British. Various accounts suggest he just faded into the population
after the war, fearing prosecution, others suggest he immigrated to the
US.

To those of you who seek lost objects of history, I wish you the best of
luck. They're out there, and they're whispering. - Clive Cussler

JAPAN The noise problem of PLC (Power Line Communication) equipment in
Japan.

As reported in our May bulletin, we have filed three complain documents
against the 17 certified types of PLC equipment claiming cancellation of
these certification because of high noise level on SW bands emitted from
these equipment. The assessment committee was held three times in the past
months, but the raised issue of critical defect in the Japanese PLC
engineering standard had never been discussed. The Chairman of the
Government committee stated that we, short wave listeners were not
qualified legally to complain the Government decision because we were not
licensed stations. The committee advised the Minister to reject our
complain and the legal paper stating the rejection by the Minister has
been received.

Due to the defect of the Japanese standard, the most of the certified PLC
equipment radiates 20 dB or higher noise than the noise level assumed in
the introduction of PLC equipment in Japan. This is serious problem for
all short wave listeners and we will continue to fight against the
Government decision. A group of 100 licenced ham operators are still
fighting with the government using the same issue as ours. A series of
their complaining were accepted legally and the Government committee is in
process of discussion. They hired powerful lawyers and we are watching the
progress. We are hoping re-examination of the defective PLC engineering
standard would be initiated.

KOREAS Interview with the President of the Radio Free Chosun.

"When I was taking part in the student movement of the 1980s, the most
encouraging thing was broadcasts towards South Korea from North Korea. We
used to use the broadcast contents for our educational and propaganda
materials. Of course, due to that activism, which was a National Security
Law violation, I went to prison in the early 1990s."

Lee Kwang Baik, the President of Radio Free Chosun (RFC), a lesser-known
short-wave radio broadcast NGO in South Korea, explained his experience of
executing a 180-degree turn from pro-North Korea social activist into
North Korean democratization activist to Daily NK on Monday. He confessed,
"In the mid-1990s, for the first time, I figured out that North Korea was
not an ideal society, but a dictatorship in which the regime abused
people's human rights in the extreme just to maintain the system."

In light of which, Lee introduced RFC's goal, "North Korea should develop
its economy through democratization and opening and reform. RFC is a
broadcasting company to help North Korean people achieve this and to speak
as a proxy for the North Korean people's position and sentiment, so we
named the organization RFC; not 'Radio Free North Korea,' but 'Radio Free
Chosun.'" Chosun is how North Koreans refer to their own country.

Below is a transcript of the interview with Lee Kwang Baik

- There are four civilian radio broadcasters for North Korea and also two
foreign radio broadcasts like RFA and VOA targeting North Korea. What is
the difference between you and them?

There are three different points. First, RFC has a distinct purpose:
"North Korea should develop its economy through democratization and reform
and opening," and we are striving to help North Korean people achieve it.

Second, RFC is a broadcaster in which everyone, wherever they come from,
can join our activities. Presently, North Koreans, South Koreans and
Chinese cooperate on our goals.

Third, RFC transfers overseas information by way of drama, so that North
Korean people can understand easily and get it vividly.

- What are RFC's representative programs?

We have "Episodes and Truth" that lets North Korean people perceive the
truth of current issues, and a drama "Virtual Court of Kim Jong Il," that
shows how extreme a dictatorship North Korea has, how terribly people
suffer under the Kim Jong Il regime, and other hidden stories of the
dictator.

Additionally, we have also comments and statements in order to suggest
better directions for North Korea's future.

- How many North Korean people do you think listen to RFC? How far away
can North Korean people listen to it? Are you monitoring the broadcasting
situation?

According to the results of InterMedia's examination in 2008, the rate of
those who had listened to RFC was around five percent, but we presume
around one or two percent of people are listening to it. However, I think
even this rate is significant. The first aim of RFC is to raise the
listener rate to two or three percent in a few years.

It is short wave radio broadcasting, so everywhere on earth people can
listen to it. As long as jamming by the North Korean regime does not
exist, it can be heard all over the country.

- You must want a lot from the South Korean government.

The government needs to support radio broadcasting with medium-wave
frequencies, which are more stable than short wave ones, in order to lead
North Korea to change itself, and it has to do so strategically, because
of course the North Korean issue is a highly significant issue for the
future of the Korean Peninsula.

The state-owned Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) airs programs for the
North Korean people at medium-wave, but it has to focus not only on
transferring information but on having an interest in changing North
Korean society.

- You used to be a core cadre in the South Korean University Student
League, which is a representative organization for radical pro-North Korea
students. How did you change your mind and move yourself from the leftist
pole to this moderation?

The reason why I dreamed of socialist revolution following the North
Korean model was that North Korea looked really idealistic in books but
South Korean society was quite problematic in reality during the 1980s.
Therefore, we wanted to change South Korean society into a North Korean
one. However, in the 1990s, I figured out that North Korea was not an
ideal society in which socialism had been realized, but a dictatorship in
which the regime abused people's human rights to the extreme just in order
to maintain its system.

After my absolute faith in North Korea was ruined, I even decided to quit
working as a social activist due to my anguish, defeatism and guilty
conscience that what I had done was merely against the North Korean people
whom I had sided with.

However, the principal mentality of the movement was the pursuit of
happiness, benefit, development and human progress, so I realized that the
North Korean democratization movement was definitely necessary.
Subsequently, I was dramatically turned into a North Korean human rights
and democratization activist.

- There are still those who believe that North Korea is an ideal society
and accept the North Korean regime's propaganda as it is.

I believe that self-sacrifice for human progress is noble and a
significant foundation for our societal development. However, the fact
that the ideology which they believe in is false and in opposition to
history and the benefits of the people is a tragedy.

That Juche ideology and North Korean propaganda are just fabrications and
tools for Kim Jong Il to control his regime and to maintain his private
dictatorship has already been revealed, yet some stick to fossilized ideas
surrounded by past movement patterns. It is another tragedy of this
period.

KUWAIT Antenna Boost for BBG The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG)
has awarded Thomson for the supply of a rotatable shortwave antenna system
for their Kuwait station. The new system will enhance the coverage and
flexibility and provide for reduction in maintenance and operating costs.

Scope of supply includes design, delivery and installation of the
rotatable shortwave antenna type HP-RCA 2/2 (High Performance Rotatable
Curtain Array), including high band and low band antenna, rigid dipole,
balun, foundation design and service works.

The design of the new rotatable shortwave antenna is based on the Thomson
rotatable curtain array 4/4. The 2/2 system is optimized for near distant
coverage up to 4000 km in analog AM or digital DRM modes and features
highest flexibility (rotatable system), high antenna gain, cost-efficient
operation and low life cycle costs due to easy maintainability.

BBG is an independent agency of the United States government responsible
for all non-military, international broadcasting sponsored by the U.S.
government. BBG has a good customer relationship with Thomson, based on a
long history of past performance in strategic broadcast projects.

change the language at the tail end of a broadcast? Dan noted on July 12

which has been in operation for 30 years. The new equipment will increase
the service reliability while bringing considerable savings in operation
expenses thanks to enhanced overall system efficiency.

NIGERIA VON leads Africa into digital era in Short Wave strategic
turnkey project under completion in Abuja.

Voice of Nigeria is a foremost international broadcaster and a leading
force for the advancement of education and democracy in Africa. Aware of
the importance of radio as a cost-effective and dependable mass
communication medium - especially for people at the grass roots level -
VON has been active in promoting the future of the medium and was the
first African broadcaster to become a full member of the DRM Consortium.
VON recognized early the great potential of digital radio to revolutionize
communication within the continent.

Since DRM uses the same frequencies and bandwidths as analogue radio,
there are no regulatory issues involved such as spectrum use and
licensing.

Following the relocation of the capital of the Federal Government of
Nigeria from Lagos to Abuja, VON (Voice of Nigeria) was mandated to
commence the construction of an ultra-modern radio transmission station in
Abuja. The new station was to be the first of its kind and the biggest in
Sub-Sahara Africa, equipped with the most modern DRM compliant equipment.
At a total project cost of roughly 40 million US dollars, the turnkey
project is the largest single investment in radio shortwave transmission
by any country on the African continent.

The contract for the project was awarded in 2006 to a consortium led by
Thomson Broadcast & Multimedia based on its track record of satisfactory
performance and execution of a similar project at the Ikorodu station near
Lagos. Scope of supply included three 250 kW shortwave transmitters,
including integrated digital DRM front-end, two curtain antennas, a
rotatable high performance curtain antenna, auxiliaries and civil works
like buildings, canalization, water and mains supply, diesel power plant,
access road, etc.

The high overall efficiency of Thomson broadcast systems will provide for
considerable energy savings as well greatly enhanced coverage flexibility.

Professor Dora Akunyili, Minister of Information and Communications,
recently visited the site in May to make an inspection of the progress. "I
am very, very impressed with what I have seen on ground this morning",
said the Minister following the site visit. "Voice of Nigeria has put up a
state of the art transmission station - with most recent, most cutting-
edge technology in subsaharan Africa. That the first rotary antenna in
this continent is being in Nigeria is something for us to celebrate. Voice
of Nigeria transmits to all parts of the world. Now we can to tell our
story to the world in a very clear signal."

Thanks to the outstanding cooperation between VON and the local company
"Thomcast NGT Ltd." and its Engineering Team, the project will reach a
timely completion in 2009.

PAKISTAN 9645 Radio Pakistan Gujrati service 0400-0430 UT, 9345 kHz.

Radio Pakistan Gujrati broadcast was monitored in Lahore today at 9345 kHz
from 0400 to 0430 UT. The signal was clear; perhaps the transmitter was
API-9. The programme is produced in the studios of Radio Pakistan Karachi
and is transmitted from Islamabad shortwave transmitter. Its primary
audience is Gujrati speaking population of Karachi and the outskirts for
which this service is also broadcast on medium wave. The service is
available for listeners in India on shortwave. The broadcast time for
India is inappropriate, i.e. 9.30 am there. I have hardly ever heard any
mail from Indian Gujrat. Since now the transmitter is a better one, this
service might find some listeners in India. The overall programme content
is also poor.

Apart from Gujrati service, I have monitored Chinese, Bangla, Hindi,
Pushto, Irani, Dari and Urdu broadcasts during A09 season. All the listed
frequencies were found active. The transmissions via 250 kW units are
being heard in Lahore quite regularly. The transmitter API-9 is
unpredictable, which is quite odd for a new transmitter, although when it
operates satisfactorily its signal is clear.

The other two 100 kW transmitters, API-3 and API-4 are showing signs of
improvement. I think it was Mauno Ritola who pointed out that some repairs
for these 100 kW units have been carried out.

Voice of Jammu Kashmir Freedom Movement can be heard at 3995 kHz with low
buzz in its evening transmission. Quetta and Peshawar are not being heard
in my region while Radio Pakistan Quetta programme schedule for July
indicated programmes on shortwave. Rawalpindi 10 kW is sending good
signals for Azad Kashmir Radio Trarkhel.

On the whole, Radio Pakistan shortwave transmission has improved during A-
09; furthermore, Radio Pakistan World Service Broadcasts in Urdu and Radio
Pakistan Islamabad broadcasts are available regularly on Radio Pakistan
website

R. Sim, a channel of the R. Renascenca group has been experiencing some
problems at their Muge site, where the MW operation is served by 3 Harris
txs, viz. 1x100 kW (typically at 60-80 kW only) (currently under repair)
and 2x10 kW, i.e. the ones that are being used now, but even these are
radiating noise on several spurs to either side of the fundamental fq, 594
kHz, and the modulation level is simply lower & worse than one might
expect, quite worse than on any of the their southern txs, 927, 891, 963

UNIDENTIFIED. 15450 weak signal in Asian(?) language, Friday July 17 at

same Saturday July 11, and found WRTH A-09 shows BBC Bengali service at
1330-1500 UT Saturdays via "Armavir", Russia. Now I suppose it is 7 days a
week here, or at least more than one.

Altho Dr Supratik Sanatani has complained how BBC have been unable to
present their shifted Bangla schedule accurately, perhaps someone can read
this and tell us if it includes 15450 kHz and on what days and Universal

SOMALIA The African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia is to start a
radio station in Mogadishu.

The Defence/Army Spokesperson, Maj Felix Kulayigye said that the African
Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) has already procured the radio
equipment.

"The machines are already in East Africa. We are training those who will
be handling radio programmes," he said

According to a military source, the radio will be a mouthpiece of the
Transitional government led by Sheikh Sharif to bolster its campaign
against the Islamist hardliners who have been calling for general
upraising in the country against the AU force. However Maj. Kulayigye
denied that the setting up of the radio is intended to counter war
propaganda by the Islamist fundamentalists in Somalia.

He said the radio will broadcast educational programmes and the need to
have a peaceful Somalia.

SOLAR ECLIPSE A Total Solar Eclipse will be visible in India on July 22,
2009 from early morning 05:28 hrs to 07:40 hrs IST (0000-0210 UTC). It
will last for nearly four minutes - from 6.26 am to 6.30 am in India when
the sun will not be visible at all. After almost 10 years we have an
opportunity of witnessing a total solar eclipse from India, the upcoming
solar eclipse will be longest total solar eclipse till 2114. According to
NASA, the solar eclipse on July 22, 2009 is a 'Total Solar Eclipse' and
the Moon's umbral shadow on Sun begins in India and crosses through Nepal,
Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, China and ends in the Pacific Ocean.

Here's the link for NASA webpage on Total Solar Eclipse on 22nd July 2009
<http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEmono/TSE2009/TSE2009.html>

Total solar eclipses occurs when the Moon comes between the Earth and the
Sun, completely obscuring the solar disk for a few minutes. The eclipse
follows a West-to-East track that lasts several hours until the alignment
ends.

Here's the path of Total Solar Eclipse in India:
<http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEmono/TSE2009/TSE2009iau/TSE2009-fig02.GIF>

The total solar eclipse in India will be visible from many cities of India
like Surat, Vadodara, Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Patna
& Siliguri. Majority of the regions in India will not have a view of the
Total solar eclipse. As per NASA data, it will be a partial eclipse in
Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai.

Solar eclipses have been always been of special interest to Dxers & can
provide propagation enhancement on lower frequency bands, also of interest
will be to monitor MW band. It will be interesting to check the lower
bands as the eclipse progresses due to dip in the D layer ionization
bringing typical nighttime propagation conditions. It will be also of
curiosity of dxers to make observations of propagation conditions just
before, during and after the eclipse. There has been some excellent and
unusual reception during past eclipses.

in the newsletter of "Indian DX Club Intl" during Feb-May 1980, courtesy

"Liebe Hoererfreundin, Lieber Hoererfreund,

Botschaft
die Galerie,
am Luetzowufer 26
in 10787 Berlin,

Wer
also noch die alte die Koreanische Kulturabteilung kennen lernen will, der
sollte sich das KBS-Hoerertreffen nicht entgehen lassen!

28. August 2009.

Wer sich schon vorab informieren will,
<http://martin-hyun.blogspot.com/>

SMS: 0170/1841346,
- per E-Mail: <KBS-Hoerertreffen-Berlin @ willi-stengel.de>
oder
- per Post: Andreas Muecklich, Holzmindener Str. 28, D-12347 Berlin.

Viele Gruesse aus Berlin

Leiter KBS World Radio Hoererclub"

Schoenhauser Allee 58, in
10437 Berlin.
