ANGOLA 4949.757 RN de Angola, 1945, Portuguese, strong carrier but very
low audio. Still though, occasional talk by a man and local music could be
heard. I also believe this signs-on around 1500 UT. This is based on a
massive het 'just appearing' against India on 4950 at 1500 today (6 June)
and also the same time yesterday, June 5.

ARGENTINA 11710.72 RAE, at 0253 UT on June 4. Spanish ballads presented
during English service. Fair signal varied S3 to S5.

AUSTRALIA VALE BRIAN HALPIN Johno here, ARDXC.
Our valued member Brian Halpin of the Australian Radio DX Club, member 757
passed away Sunday 7th June in Brisbane. He had battled an extremely
aggressive form of cancer. His passing at 72 years will be mourned by
many.
Brian was an active member in Sydney then Brisbane branches for many
years. His support for the club was invaluable, and served for a number of
years on the committee till moving to Brisbane. He instituted the Cataract
Dam DXpeditions, which have proved extremely popular, in fact hearing
2368.5 Radio Symban in its very brief operation, last year, a world first.
Brian also taught scouts the rudimentary facts about radio. He had VK4BVH
as a callsign for his amateur operations. He also went on other
DXpeditions like 1996 to Rainbow beach, which was infamous.
He served with the Australian armed forces in the Malaya emergency. He was
a gentleman, who treasured his family and friends, always with a smile. He
survived by his wife Pam, Greg his son, and daughter Charmaine, and
grandchildren. The place won't be the same, mate.

entsprechend in seiner baulichen Charakteristik erhalten bleiben soll. Der
Kueniglberg wurde von Zone 1 auf Zone 3 hochgestuft, womit viel groessere
Kraefte aufzufangen waeren.

If you regularly listen into the new 7100-7200 kHz range in the evening
hours, then you may have noticed some interference. Starting 1630 UT and
lasting about one hour, you will find on 7165, or sometimes on 7175 kHz, a
powerful wideband rushing noise, which is some 15 kHz wide. Also very
faintly you can hear the carrier of a program below the jammer. The
culprit is Radio Ethiopia. It is jamming Voice of the Broad Masses from
Eritrea on 7165 kHz. Ethiopia also regularly jams other transmissions in
Amharic, for example Deutsche Welle, on 15 and 11 MHz. The jamming uses a
rectangular white noise signal that is some 10 to 16 kHz wide.
In 2008 Ethiopia commissioned 3 or 4 new transmitters, some of which are
regularly used for jamming unwanted programmes. To see a screen shot of
the jamming signal, check out the IRY Region 1 website.

FRANCE 1467 TWR Announces Antenna Upgrade.
This antenna upgrade at Roumoules completed April 9, 2009 according to
this news item on TWR website:
<http://www.twr.org/news/twr_announces_antenna_upgrade_north_africa>
Trans World Radio (TWR) is pleased to announce the successful completion
of a major antenna upgrade to North Africa as of April 9, 2009. The
upgrade greatly improves both coverage and signal strength, increasing the
number of potential listeners in the region to 40 million people.
Prior to the antenna modification, TWR's signal to many North African
people groups, particularly those in the Northern Atlas mountains, was
nearly indistinguishable above the interference caused by electromagnetic
radiation from growing cities. Today, the reception is loud and clear. The
transmission is now beamed towards the Atlas Mountains in a concentrated
beam, as opposed to the earlier, wider-angle signal toward an area with
not much interest in reception. The transmitter power for 1467 kHz remains
at 100,000 watts.
(via RNW MN, June 9)
Re: Comment on Trans World Radio plans directional antenna on 1467 kHz,
?? 100 or 1000 Kilowatt ??
However, I presume power stated below should be 1,000 kW (not 100 kW)?
(ibid.)
1000 kW of course, I guess too, - to reach the Algerian and Moroccoan
valleys.
New 2 mast directional antenna will be erected soon?
170-200 degrees directional antenna is needed.
See enclosed image of Roumoules site.
Present directional pattern of 241 degrees 5 mast antenna is not
sufficient for whole north Africa Sahel/Sahara zone. See the former TWR
schedules... of 25, 85, 150, 241, and 325 degrees main lobe at Roumoules
site.

Germany's public broadcasters will drastically reduce the programing they
put online in response to attacks from commercial channels and newspapers
that the online offerings represent unfair competition. Markus Schachter,
director of public broadcaster ZDF[second German TV nationwide], said the
channel will reduce its online offerings by 70 percent and cut the length
of time that catch-up programing is available for streaming.
Reports on the official websites of ZDF and sister channel ARD will now be
taken down after one week, and reports on sporting events, such as
Germany's Bundesliga soccer games, will be pulled after only one day
online.
Schachter also said ZDF would focus more on posting video to its site and
greatly reduce its text-only offerings. The move is a sop to the German
newspaper industry, which has complained that ARD and ZDF's free websites
unfairly compete with the online versions of their publications.
(Reuters/Hollywood Reporter; RNW MN Jun 5 by Andy Sennitt; dxld June 6)
3 comments so far 1 Mark June 6th, 2009 - 12:33 UTC There's something
missing in that picture. It's not like the German public broadcasters had
given in voluntarily. Twelve months ago, EU commissioner for information
society and media Viviane Reding had complained about the public
broadcasters' web offerings, citing EU regulations. She appealed to
Germany that they should set limits to their public broadcasters on what
kind of online content is acceptable, and the German states
(Bundeslaender) followed suit in their new state treaty on broadcast
services and telecommunication media (Rundfunkstaatsvertrag).
ARD and ZDF really tried to defend themselves. For example, they argued
that their fee payers had funded their productions and should have the
right to continuously access it. But in the end they had to cave in.
I guess some politicians aren't too unhappy that all the critical reports
from political TV magazines will now vanish after one week.
2 Kai Ludwig June 6th, 2009 - 20:41 UTC.
The matter is even more complicated. Any online activities beyond making
broadcast content available for seven days (equivalent to BBC iPlayer,
considered as broadcast distribution, not as real online service) requires
a procedure that is basically a copy of the "public value test" for the
BBC.
So it remains to be seen what will be the outcome of these public value
tests. However, ZDF indeed choose to eliminate 80 percent (that's the
figure quoted in Germany) of its online content and not submitting it for
the public value test at all.
Also related to this matter is the closure of two WDR radio channels,
presumably prompted by the circumstance that it was no longer possible to
run more radio stations than authorized*) by way of distributing them
online only. Thus WDR 2 Klassik and 1 Live Kunst[arte] have been
eliminated. The latter was on digital broadcasting platforms (including
DVB-S via Astra 1H) as well, and it has been replaced by Kiraka here, a
previous online-only channel with repeats of children's programmes from
WDR 5.
*) Yes, the public broadcasters in Germany are basically banned from
launching any new radio stations, away from the small detail that in
theory each regional broadcasting institution could launch a single new
channel for exclusive DAB+ distribution. But on the other hand this is
quite irrelevant, since in the real world radio stations are being closed
down for budget reasons. RBB's Radio Multikulti was probably not the last
one.
3 Jonathan Marks June 6th, 2009 - 21:59 UTC I wonder why the public
doesn't complain in that they have paid for this content through licence
fees. Why did ARD and ZDF lose this argument?

LATVIA Broadcast sites in Riga Comments to Bernd Trutenau from Andrejs
Kuznecovs regarding some pictures available on the Net.
It's a photos of the antenna masts for Latvijas radiofons (name of
Latvijas Radio before WWII). Between World Wars Latvian radio was situated
in the General Post Office house and same building was used as a site for
transmitter. Masts was build near the GPO on Radio iela street (same name
saved till now) in 20's. Transmissions from the Radio iela (street)
continues during 20's, 30's, first Russian occupation and the German
occupation period.
Wermacht blow up one mast, transmitter and the GPO house after the running
out from Riga in October 1944. Due the this problem, Soviets open Latvijas
radio in new site in the downtown of Riga and used mobile transmitter in
railway wagon in Zemitani station for the first time. After the some years
new tr. site in Ulbroka (in the territory of former relax house-resort for
Wermacht) was built and trophy masts from the Eastern Prussia was used for
it.
Old GPO house was reconstructed in 40's and now used as a dept. of the
Latvian University (faculty of economics and some others depts.). One
(blewed) mast goes to metal, but other, what stay till 90's on the Radio
iela was used for the milicia (Soviet time police) communications with the
flag of Soviet Latvia on the top on holidays.
This mast was taked to pieces for old metal in 90's, when police begin
using of new communication equipment in the Zakusala TV tower. So
shortly... I think, what you easy find all my mentioned sites in the
Google map. Concrete bases for the last mast on Radio iela now stay and
may be seen.

PHILIPPINES/MYANMAR Myanmar keeps in touch with Christian radio.
Radio Veritas Asia keeps the people of Asia in touch with the rest of the
world. The Catholic radio service, based in the Philippines, also serves
Kayin Christians in Burma, most of whom are Evangelicals and other
Protestants.
Hong Kong youths log onto the Internet, children in Tokyo use their mobile
phones and many Delhi kids have scores of cable TV channels to entertain
them. But for the Kayin, or Karen, ethnic people in Myanmar, a cheap US$10
radio is their "hi-tech" link to communications and entertainment. Here
you'll find many Kayin with "Made in China" radios tuned to Radio Veritas
Asia's (RVA) Kayin service.
The RVA, based in Quezon City north of Manila and sponsored by the
Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences, has provided a Kayin-language
service for over 25 years. Its Catholic programs have become a source of
spiritual strength and information to thousands of Kayin Christians, most
of whom are Protestant.
The programs include reflections on the Bible, meditations, family and
youth issues, question and answer sessions on spirituality, sessions on
the lives of the saints, local news and Kayin culture.
Anthony Htun Mya, 45, from Hkaungpu-Bawsi in Hpa-pun Township, Kayin
State, who was on a visit to Yangon, is one such listener. He is a regular
follower of Radio Veritas' shortwave early morning and evening services.
In his village, the programs are virtually the only window to the outside
world, he said. There, all the Catholic and Baptist villagers regularly
tune in to the service.

Heutiger Sendeturm in Zorawina.
ohne Isolatoren ersetzt.

2005year history:
Harris Corporation today announced completion - nearly two years ahead of
schedule - of the 85m-dollar first phase of a comprehensive programme to
upgrade and expand the nationwide broadcast infrastructure of S.N.
Radiocomunicatii SA, Romania's state-owned broadcast organization.
Modernization of Romania's aging broadcast communications system marks a
critical step forward for Romania and its population, bringing the country
up to date with the solid-state analogue technology favoured in Western
Europe. Harris' end-to-end radio and television solution also provides
S.N. Radiocomunicatii SA with a clear path to the digital future.
Phase 1 of the three-phase project, which is providing 100 per cent radio
coverage throughout Romania, was completed in just 20 months instead of
the anticipated four-and-one-half years. Harris accelerated the project by
dedicating the additional engineering and technical resources needed to
establish nationwide radio coverage before Romania's election in November
2004.
Harris supplied 28 low-power (10-kW to 50-kW) mediumwave txs, eight high-
power (200-kW and 400-kW) mediumwave txs and 106 FM radio txs for local
coverage as well as longer distances of difficult terrain at sites
throughout Romania. The range and diversity of txs was essential to ensure
100 per cent nationwide radio broadcast coverage for Romania's regional
network and two national networks across urban areas and vast stretches of
rural communities often divided by the Carpathian mountains.
The end-to-end txion solution also included antenna systems, microware
links for resource sharing, engineering, installation, training and
commissioning sces. In addition, the first of many high- and low-power
television txs and transposers were installed. The television
installations begin upgrades to Romania's television txion infrastructure,
which will be expanded and completed during the remainder of the
modernization programme.
Furthermore, three control and monitoring networks will reduce operational
costs at each station facility by enabling the remote monitoring of all
radio and television txion equipment from four regional headquarters.
Until now, it has been conservatively estimated that the country's aging
broadcast technology did not reach up to 40 per cent of Romania's 22.3
million. With the completion of the radio phase of the modernization
project, the country now enjoys 100 per cent radio coverage at a higher
fidelity and lower cost. With the inclusion of new RDS capabilities,
public radio stations can be received and retained on the move throughout
the country.
Romania also has the ability to reach Romanians living in other European
countries with the use of a Harris longwave AM tx.

AFRICA ARSK MONITORING REPORT FOR May, 2009.
Six broadcast stations in eastern Africa have been identified on the 40
meter band between 7100 and 7200 kHz.
Ethiopia has two, for internal and external services, Uganda one,
Hargeisha (Rep. of Somaliland) one, Eritrea (VOBM) has one and has moved
from 7100 to 7175 kHz, and Sudan (Khartoum) has one. I am very grateful to
the BBC Monitoring Service for their assistance, language being a problem.
Another station in a Chinese language on 7130 kHz remains to be identified
but is not easily monitored. Whether Mandarin, Cantonese or another is not
known, but very few listeners in this part of the world will understand
it.
Two weeks monitoring at the coast were not very productive, but a few
Somalia stations were heard in generally poor propagation conditions.
Otherwise the usual southern Sudan intruders, including NGOs were heard,
and some Ethiopians on 40 meters. What is apparently a military net on
6999 kHz remains in operation, as well as an Ethiopian on the same
frequency.

about 317 m above sea level in the vicinity of Hueckeswagen, some 40 km
north-east of Cologne. It takes its name from the nearby village of
Bockhacken.
Here a constant check is kept on the short wave broadcasts and on their
special propagation conditions. At the same time, newscasts by other radio
stations and by news agencies are received for the DW Monitoring Service
so that the general trend of foreign radio programs beamed to the target
area in question can be taken into account. The technical quality of other
broadcasting organizations is also checked.
In an exchange process, these stations also conduct similar observations
of the DW programs. The extensive field of operations of this receiving
station also includes the conduct of measurement tests, the study of
propagation conditions, the checking of the channels on the various short
wave bands, the reception of teletype transmissions by the relay stations
and distant teletype transmitters and the reception of transmissions from
other broadcasting stations, which, as contributions to DW programs, are
put through to the broadcasting house in Cologne.
The variety of work to be done here calls for a well coordinated team
which works day and night on a shift system. A number of important factors
had to be considered in selecting the location for this receiving station.
As reception - especially of very weak signals - has to be as free from
interference as possible, the station has to be situated well away from
areas with a high noise level, i.e. from densely inhabited residential
areas or industrial plants which cause considerable disturbances and
produce screening effects. Moreover, it is necessary that the receiving
station is erected well apart from a transmitting station, because in the
immediate vicinity cross modulation might occur in the receiving
apparatuses due to the high power-rate of the transmitter.
To ensure the trouble-free functioning of the Adcock antenna system, the
station building was constructed underground. Above it, at ground level,
in a circular area with a diameter of 28 meters, 18 vertically polarized
antennas are arranged in two Adcock circles. With 6 and 12 antennas,
respectively, they form an inner and outer antenna system. Each antenna is
8.5 m high. The wide-band Adcock antenna system covers the frequency range
from 1.5 to 28 MHz. A vertically polarized multi-and antenna is located in
the geometrical centre of the two Adcock circles and is used as a radio
receiving antenna for long, medium and short waves. An alteration of the
antenna characteristic of the Adcock system can be effected by means of
goniometers.
Unlike other directional reception systems, it is not the selected
reception direction that is amplified. Instead, the stations causing the
interference are attenuated depending on their direction of incidence. The
tune-out effect is as much as 50 decibels for any desired azimuth. In
addition, the direction of incidence of a foreign station can be
ascertained by a visual direction finder (IDF).
For communication with the relay station at Kigali in Rwanda and for the
reception of radio stations in Africa, a double rhombic antenna is
available with frequency ranges from 3 to 11 MHz and from 11 to 28 MHz.
This is used mainly for the radio teletype link with the Kigali relay
station and can be employed both as a transmitting and receiving antenna.
Furthermore, there is a 230 meter long L-type antenna for long and medium
wave reception, a rotatable FM-directional antenna (VHF-frequency range:
87 to 108 MHz) and a rotatably arranged three-band short wave directional
antenna for the 10, 15 and 20 meter bands - all of them located in the
grounds of the receiving station.
All antennas are connected via distribution amplifiers with the measuring
and receiving set-ups so that multiple uses of the antenna systems are
possible. Each measuring and receiving set-up is equipped with two
receivers, a single sideband attachment, a telegraphy demodulator (except
measuring set-up 1) and a directional rejection goniometer with phase and
amplitude control unit. The equipment here also includes a central
frequency measuring system with radio and audio frequency generators of
great accuracy, a high precision crystal clock installation controlled by
a standard frequency transmitter, four remote-controlled tape machines,
RF-spectrum analyzing recorders, long-time registration recorders for
field strength measurements, DC recorders for the registration of field
strength fluctuations or a field strength spectrograph respectively, a
visual direction finder, FM, short, medium and long wave receivers for the
DW monitoring service and extensive audio frequency equipment. Receivers
connected to telegraphy demodulators and SSB-units are used for the
reception of radio teletype (RTTY) and single sideband transmission.
Between the broadcasting house in Cologne and the receiving station, there
is a multitude of connections. They include 2 programme lines, 8 monitor
lines, one line to the private branch exchange at the broadcasting house
and a direct line to the monitoring service. The measuring and monitoring
station also has its own telephone exchange line.
