ADEN [History] Jamming/UK and non The British National Archives has
just released a file (T220/1394) revealing that the British authorities in
1959 set up a secret jamming project in their Aden colony.

It shows that transmitters of the Diplomatic Wireless Service and
transmitters stored in Cyprus were involved in the operation, which was
designed to counter hostile broadcasts from Cairo and elsewhere at the
time of 'the Aden Colony elections to the Legislative Council'.

There is discussion in the file concerning how best to disguise the budget
for the jamming. It is argued by one official that it should be accounted
for as a 'miscellaneous item' in the Colonial budget which 'is appropriate
... from the point of view of preserving anonymity: this is important
because for political reasons the Government of Aden has had to preserve
the strategic secrecy locally over the operation which gave rise to the
expenditure.' Another official says that the jamming equipment 'might be a
permanent requirement - this depends on a study by the Electronic Warfare
Board.'

This gives Excel spreadsheets for all broadcast formats including SW. This
might even cover extinct sites needed for your own database. The Chilean
use of SW has steadily declined but the facility should be of some use to
you.

1400 kilometers distance to Santiago capital, so it's not uncommon that a
250 watt signal is not heard in the capital. Depending on the antenna the
usual radius is about 300 to 700 kilometers around the tx location for
such a tiny signal. (wb)

CHINA Firedrake check May 31 at 1354: best on 15600, then 13970, then
15150. Nothing audible on 18320, 14420, 11300, 9300, 8400, but the lower
ones may have been on sinking into the noise level. At 1439, however,
14420 now audible \\ better 15600 kHz.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld May 31)

LOUSY sw condition this morning, only transmissions from nearby sites -
like Issoudun some 600 kms away, or Litomysl-CZE and Rimavska Sobota-SVK -
came in unfortunately strong this morning. No Firedrakes heard this
morning.

ECHO jamming compared to CNR1 BEI 17605 kHz.
In 0600-0800 UT slot noted on 13610 13740 15250 15615 15635 17510 17615
17780 17880 21500 21550 21690 kHz.

>From 0800 UT on 13610 13740 15250 17775 17855, and 21705 kHz.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews June 3)

Firedrake (non-stop Chinese music jamming) scan from 7100 thru 19000, from
1220 to 1240 + 1320 + 1409 UT, June 3:

8400 \\ 9000 both with good signals. During the gap at 1400*, noted that
8400 kept their transmitter on, while 9000 was off-the-air. 8400 FD came
back on at 1404, while 9000 was *1405.

13970 and 15600 both off-the-air.

At 1409 noted FD on 15150, not \\ and not heard earlier.

So assume there actually was a slight decrease in the activities of the
Sound of Hope, which is what FD is directed against.

Just as Wolfy reported earlier, heard numerous frequencies with CNR-1
program echo-jamming (operating more than one jamming transmitter and out
of sync, causing echo).
(Ron Howard-CA-USA, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews June 3)

CUBA [Venezuela non] El Mandatario was doing a much-publicized 4-day
Alo, Presidente marathon starting Thursday May 28, but apparently that
didn't make it onto any special Cuban frequencies. After a few weeks' gap,
however, the finale got the Cuban five going again on Sunday May 31,
checked at 1415 with 13750 usward best as usual, in mailbag segment during
the prolog, and not \\ RHC mainstream on 13760, 13780 kHz.

At 1437, 13750 service was \\ much weaker 13680 which also had degraded
audio during song, and detectable on 11690 and better 12010, barely on
17750. Not checked again until 1613 when there was a Venezolana de
Television program promo about something else, so I never axually heard
Chavez.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld May 31)

After seeing comments in the latest DXLD digest about CUBA SW TXer sites.
I decided to do some further research into the topic & my suspicions about
the old Bauta site NOT having been 'all but dismantled' have been
CONFIRMED from two date stamped images. One from a photograph reference
that Wolfy provided & the other from my own research today via Terra
Server.

RHC Bauta - Corralillo: 22 57 00 N 82 32 44 W
International Transmission Centre No.1

First Evidence: <http://www.panoramio.com/photo/15224483>
(clearly showing high gain curtain arrays from image dated late 2006)

Second Evidence: Terra Server clearly shows the high gain curtains arrays
still insitu in a part clouded image dated Feb 2008. 22 57 12.7 N 82 32
45.3 W

I believe confusion surrounded the Bauta site from a Google Earth image
dated 2003, that shows what looks like, from ground patterns a typical
resemblance of past curtain arrays in place. I figure either:
a) old arrays removed & new ones installed OR
b) ground prepared for installation of new high gain antennas.

Either way Bauta appears far from dismantled (as of images last year).

NOW ... I can't recall what rough coordinates we had for the RHC
International Transmission Centre No.2 at Bejucal & the date of the Google
Earth image around the area. I recall we found nothing there apart from
what looked like remnants of a military base. I wonder if anyone would
care to go looking with Terra Server (recent image) to see if such a SW
site does indeed still exist ?

[later]
TX center no. 2 RHC Bejucal site location discovered in Google Earth ?

RHC Bejucal site discovered?
I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I think(?) I may have discovered
that ever so elusive Radio Habana Cuba Bejucal SW TXer site. With some
luck, logic and a couple of hours of searching I present:

GE coordinates: 22 52 00.84 N 82 20 03 W
maybe a STL at 22 52 29 N 82 19 51 W

How many years have we been trying to find this site Wolfy & Mauno? I hope
this is their site & not something else.

Across all 3 of RHC s sites there are certainly a lot of antennas.

It would be wonderful if radio amateurs or other radio professionals
within Cuba could do some precise direction finding to match RHC
frequencies to txer sites, with all three sites so close together it would
be next to impossible to match sites to frequencies outside of Cuba.

Anyway enjoy :-)
(Ian Baxter-AUS, SW TXsite June 3)

12 curtains visible. GREAT work - Ian. That's the site we are looking for

All three sites so CLOSE together ...

Located 8.5 kilometers away of the previously mentioned SAM missile
military base close to Bejacul, the mast design is Russian, I guess. Also
large distance between TX house and antennas of 960 meters reminds me on
design of Gavar site in former USSR, the latter TX house is also 800
meters away, see at 40 24 22.20 N 45 11 09.18 E [now Armenia]. Similar
when compared with Tbilisskaya site.

6.2 kilometers distance to latest and most modern Titan Quivican - latter
which is real China Made design like Geermu or Kashgar tx centers.

What a capital waste for such a small pure country, put three proper
transmission centers on their territory.

Another mast is visible also at Bejucal No. 2 site at
22 52 28.83 N 82 19 51.42 W
Maybe a communication or small MW tx mast ???
(wb, SW TXsite June 4)

Not sure what strategic sense RHC has for all 3 sites close together.
Certainly makes no sense when you look at potential Hurricane damage. At
least with another small country like Taiwan many of RTI s SW sites are
disbursed throughout the length of the country.

Can t help but think that Quivican site is more of a replacement for
Bejucal site. Doesn t appear to have been any major antenna work done to
Bejucal site between 2002 & 2006 (unlike Bauta site), but then again
Bejucal antennas do/did appear to target more directions than Quivican...
Bejucal site looks a little neglected.

Wolfy do you have any records that give the respective commissioning dates
of the Bejucal & Quivican sites? I have start date for Bauta as May 1,
1961.
(Ian Baxter-AUS, SW TXsite June 4)

I would say these memories came in my mind.
>From the beginning in 1961 til approx. 1970y only TX center no. 1 at Bauta
was on air for RHC SW broadcasts. Some units put on service in 1961-1962y
of Koepenick-GDR, Siemens-FRG, and in 1963y from BBC Brown Boverie
Switzerland. 20 and 100 kW units, even ssb mode PTP communication txs.

Strong relations with former USSR in late sixties til 1992y revealed on
relay exchange contract and also built up the tx center no. 2 at Bejucal
by the Sowjetunion in 1969-1971y? I guess they put 5 x 50 kW units and 12
curtains on that site. 50 kW units could be combined to 2 x 100 kW gear
transmissions, like done on many former USSR sites.

These common interests lasted til 1992y, when the former USSR relays to
Cuba and Nicaragua on 4765 kHz (Radio Orbita relay in Russian) and Radio
Moscow relay on 9600 kHz ceased service. After this Bejucal transmission
quality suffered more and more, due of lack of maintenance and spare parts
doesn't available from former USSR anymore.

>From 1994y onwards old ancient SSB mode PTP communication gear of
GDR/FRG/USSR txs appeared again as broadcast hardware via Bauta site. Used
SSB txs on USB mode 9820, 11705, and 13660/13725 kHz til approx. 2002y.
[... I remember when RHC was using a frequency in 31 meters on SSB. If I
remember it was 9820 kHz (I'm not sure now). This was an old utility
transmitter the Russians left behind. Again parts taken from others were
used to fix this one. Keith Perron, dxld]

>From 1999y onwards CRI Beijing broadcast appeared via Cuban relay. And - I
guess -
a contract signed to erect of latest Quivican site, started also in that
1999y, - all Made in China -, and work finnished in 2003-2004y?

And another mystery is La Julia site with many antenna masts visible, like
a monitoring receiving station, or direction finding at
23 00 17.35 N 82 13 47.20 W -- up to 100 antenna masts visible.
That's not a PTP or rather a big broadcasting center...
(wb, SW TXsite June 5)

We still hear some frequencies at any time that have an inferior signal,
modulation and/or are slightly out of synch with the others. Surely those
are the old Bauta site still in use, or Bejucal.

WRTH 2009 has a separate entry from RHC for Radiocuba, the transmitter
operator, with three sites specified:

Bauta, 22N57, 082W32, 6 x 100 kW and 1 x 50 kW
Bejucal, 22N55, 082W23, 3 x 50 kW and 1 x 100 kW
Quivican, 22N49, 082W17, 5 x 250 kW

[really rather 22 57 01.00 N 82 32 44.00 W
22 51 59.18 N 82 20 05.59 W
22 49 36.16 N 82 17 34.18 W ]

This means theoretically, 16 frequencies could be on the air at once from
'Habana' if all the transmitters are funxional. Perhaps someone in the
know could tell us how many currently are used from each site, and even
which sites go with which frequencies.

Ha, the Transmitter Documentation Project shows only Bauta, and has not
caught up with anything installed since 1965:
<http://www.tdp.info/cub.html>
This makes TDP of little use beyond early historical info.

BTW, WRTH also lists Prof. Arnaldo Coro Antich as in charge of RHC
Frequency Management. We had assumed he was, but this says so explicitly,
so our comments about RHC's frequency (mis)management directly concern
him.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld May 31)

"6 x 100 kW and 1 x 50 kW" for Bauta are statements repeatedly made by
Arnaldo Coro some years ago, saying that these are brand-new, just
installed transmitters with pulse-step modulation, i.e. the well-known
Chinese rip-offs. The 50 kW unit has been described as is use for 5025
kHz.

In general Bauta appears to be the pride of Cuban external broadcasting.
It seems that it was their first shortwave site, and it still appears to
be the only one they admit to exist at all. More than ten years ago a
German managed to get to the door of the transmitter hall, and what he saw
confirms the informations in the TDP table.

The Funkwerk Koepenick transmitters and maybe the Siemens units as well
were originally meant for PTP services. They later had been used for the
SSB transmissions of Radio Habana Cuba when the era of PTP shortwave
technology was over.

Anything else is basically a mystery. It's entirely up to anyone's guess
if he want to believe the statement that new PSM transmitters have been
installed at Bauta. I seem to recall that also some curtain antenna usage
had been mentioned for the first test transmissions, for what it was
worth.

But it appears that 250 kW transmitters are nothing new. Such an output
power had been mentioned for at least 6000 kHz already during the
nineties, and I never found any explanation of the circumstance that this
just does not fit all the information about Bauta installations.

My theory: Quivican [see also above, I guess Bejucal is Russian made, due
of the curtain mast design] is a facility with Soviet equipment the Cubans
wanted to keep secret from the beginning, leaving people to believe that
their beloved Bauta site is the origin of all Cuban shortwave
broadcasting. It could be indicative how much frequencies used to be on
air from Cuba during the late eighties, of course for both RHC and Moscow
relays together. More than four ones, without signals from utility
transmitters?
(Kai Ludwig-D, dxld June 4)

Quivican non-dir steep signal arrays:
22 49 24.93 N 82 17 47.47 W
22 49 21.65 N 82 17 24.15 W

Nobody uses 'new' rhombics these days, this is outdated gear of the
40ties, to 60ties.

China helped Cuba to erect new curtains and non-dir antennas especially
for Rebelde 5025 kHz. Some 2-3 years ago ... when also CRI relays appeared
on air, and also better audio quality of RHC oulets in 3-4 directions.

At Quivican still visible 16 curtains.

Bauta <http://www.panoramio.com/photo/15224483>

DigitaGlobe tag says 2003 at Bauta, but wounds around the tx house visible
rather after DISMANTELING action in 2007/2008.
(wb, SW TXsite Jan 4, 2009)

Thank you for locating the Panoramio image. NOW I am a little perplexed.

I have checked the individual Digital Globe image square over the region &
it is dated November 18, 2003 & this image doesn't show the towers/masts
that the Panaramio image dated August 10, 2006 does. NOW assuming these
dates are correct & Panaramio photo location is correct (?), can one
assume that the site had it's antennas removed & rebuilt? That would be a
possible explanation, especially when you consider that RHC has incurred
Hurricain damage to it's SW TX facilities in the past, although perhaps
one might have expected to see some evidence of fallen towers etc &
rebuilding of towers. I thought Bauta was an old site, but perhaps NEW
curtain arrays have been installed there since 2004! Remember the document
about 3 SW sites being upgraded in the early 2000 period maybe sometime
around 2002-2004! Something to ponder?

But I don't know anything about your comments: "..after DISMANTELING
action in 2007/2008" What can you you tell me about this Wolfgang? I'm
puzzled. I didn't hear about this.

Regarding Rhombics. Well I distinctly recall hearing Arnie Coro on Radio
Habana Cuba mentioning perhaps a few years ago now, for dxers to write in
regarding a particular transmission on a particular frequency/time for a
special QSL for this transmission which was via their new Rhombic antenna
(site not disclosed of course) with the special QSL showing the Rhombic
antenna. Don't now if a reconditioned or new, but that's what Arnie said
on his DX program. Maybe transcripts still exist??

I wonder if a newer image exists of the Bejucal area - anything new there.

It sure would be good to solve some of these puzzling questions. Feel free
to open this topic to other dxers or radio folk.

BTW I am going to rename the Bauta site to: Bauta - Corralillo I think
this is more accurate.
(Ian Baxter-AUS, SW TXsite Jan 4 2009)

History:
Bejucal, 17 kms east of Bauta site, halfway to Titan Quivican, mentioned
in 1999 year:

China installs two communication bases in Cuba. "The txions of CRI are now
originating from Havana on 9570", asserted an internal report from the
Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The FCC located CRI's tx at 22.56 N 82.23 W, near the town of Bejucal,
southeast of the city of Havana. I could have told them it would be south
of Havana, but at least they got some DF practice. On a high frequency
band identifying themselves falsely as "OPEC21", a US C130 military plane
flight - , stated the report. OPEC like most of these oil-related
callsigns is a tanker. More likely a KC-10 than a C-130 fitted for
refueling.

In Lourdes, province of Havana, that Russia has continued to operate since
the disappearance of the Soviet Union and for which Cuba receives $200
million annually.

All of this tends to explain some of the Morse numbers that Camillo
Castillo is hearing in Panama. While signals sound Cuban, formats are more
Russian.
(Hugh Stegman-USA, via Aandreas Erbe-D, July 31, 1999)

I am hearing R Rebelde on a new freq 9600, opening at various times
between 0958 & 1001 UT.
(Barry Hartley-NZL, bc-dx TopNews Aug 4, 1999)

and 2001:
CUBA RHC A listing of txs gives this breakdown:
at Bauta, 2 x 100 kw, 1 x 75 kW, 2 x 20 kW, 2 x 10 kW.
At Bejucal, 3 x 50 kW, 1 x 100 kW.
At Titan, 2 x 250 kW, and 1 x 250 kW planned.
(RHC via Volker Willschrey-D, excerpted from an inconvenient
xls spreadsheet by gh for dxld, Mar 22, 2001)

Titan means Quivivan high power site.

And 2004:
CUBA/VENEZUELA Just let you know, this evening 2005 UTC I was able to hear
Radio Nacional de Venezuela via Radio Habana Cuba on 15230 kHz with pretty
weak signal but clear ID 2013 UTC. This txion is beamed to Buenos Aires.
(Jouko Huuskonen-FIN, hcdx Apr 23, 2004)

I've noticed improved reception of R Havana, Cuba recently, although none
of their English broadcasts are specifically targeted at Europe - this
article in Granma International gives details of improvements in their
txion systems:

NEW TRANSMITTERS WILL ALLOW RADIO HABANA CUBA TO RECOUP AUDIENCE.
With respect to short wave (a basically international radio sce), Justo
Moreno Garcia, technical director of RADIOCUBA, announced that this year,
six txs located in international txion center No. 1 in Bauta - west of the
capital - are being automated. This will allow Radio Habana Cuba (RHC) to
recover the spaces that this station had lost in diverse regions of the
Americas where its signal used to reach.

In this same center, a seventh tx is being installed for Radio Rebelde,
and an antenna system is being assembled.

Moreno said that credits granted to Cuba by China for telecommunications
that allowed work on the installation in Bauta [rather Qivican, wb.] to
begin in 2003.

The credit for $200 million was granted to the Cuban Electronics group by
China's Import and Export Bank (EXIMBAK) via an agreement signed during
President Jiang Zemin's visit to Cuba. It has mainly been used to improve
short and medium wave radio sces.

On a tour of the Bauta installation with Juan Carlos Perez Perez, its
director, Granma International was able to corroborate the total change in
technology in situ.

Perez especially emphasized that "of the 45 days anticipated, we were able
to reduce sce problems to two or three."

As an interesting fact, Perez commented that it was precisely from there,
and on RHC waves, that the program Alo Presidente, produced in Venezuela,
is transmitted throughout Venezuela, live and direct via the national
television channel.

Moreno informed that work is also underway in international txion centers
No. 2 in Bejucal and No. 3 Titan in Quivican. The situation in those
centers and the one in Bauta had been critical, he admitted: the equipment
was "very old and inefficient," and the antenna systems and buildings were
"very deteriorated."

During the second semester of 2004, 20 new medium wave txs with digital
technology will be installed, substituting the old and inefficient Czech
TESLA equipment, Moreno reported. Those will add to the 17 that have
already been installed, which provide sces in 12 totally remodeled
centers.

Likewise, he added, 10 installations will be restored, the majority of
them in the eastern provinces of Holguin, Granma and Guantanamo.

These transformations will facilitate "a better quality signal, greater
stability in sces, improvement in the coverage areas of these centers and
an increased level of energy efficiency," he affirmed.

Work was needed to reverse the accumulated "profound deterioration" in the
txion networks of television and short and medium wave and FM radio,
further affected by the disappearance of socialism in the Eastern European
bloc. Added to that was the collapse of 14 radio towers and 4 TV towers in
the wake of Hurricane Mitchell; RADIOCUBA was one of the enterprises in
the country most affected by that hurricane.

During the second semester of 2004, 20 new medium wave txs with digital
technology will be installed, substituting the old and inefficient Czech
TESLA equipment, Moreno reported. Those will add to the 17 that have
already been installed, which provide sces in 12 totally remodeled
centers.

also some SSB and RTTY. So far I was active on 10m-160m in CW, RTTY, SSB,
PSK31, JT65A. The conditions for the lowbands are very poor. I do have
high QRM on 80m and 160m.

Currently I am able to use a very nice antenna. Its a 16dipole array into
direction North, another array into West. The signals that I had during
the last few days were amazing. EUs were coming up to 599+40dB. The
antenna is actually not tuned yet but perfoming great on 15m, 17m, 20m,
30m. I can also use it on 40m and 12m. Its alot of fun. I kindly ask you
to not do so many dupe QSOs. There are still many weak stations that want
to work me and for some 5N is still a new one, especially outside EU. I
was not able to enjoy working NA or OC due to many callers from EU.

For 160m I am using a 18m long vertical with 40m long radials. I was able
to make 5 QSOs but that required to be QRV for more than 30 hours.
Conditions are very poor and I had to fight with extreme QSB. For the five
QSOs, I had to stay up two nights and people kept calling me. Then, for a
few minutes the signal came out the noise and we could make the QSO. I
will be QRV on 160m again, but dont expect to much from it. Its not that I
dont want to activate the top band but things are more difficult here than
it seems.

My operating QTH is about 20km away from the hotel. I am usually not
operating in the night but I will keep trying to be on top band especially
during sunset. I might be online in the on4kst chat while I am on 160m.

The log is online at qsl.net and can be also reached from my website
<www.dl3och.de> I try to update the log once a week.

I have to disappoint you regarding AF-076. I did find a way to activate
the island, but the only time would be in July/August. That would be the
rain season, which means rain every day as well as heavy storms. Not the
right weather for camping. However, I will come back and will activate the
IOTA maybe later this or next year.

Other activity as 5N0EME on 2m, 70cm and 23cm in JT65 and if possible CW.
Please check <www.mmmonvhf.de> for latest news.

I will QSL all QSOs 100% via bureau and also direct but only via DL3OCH.

Note that the WHR website <www.whr.org> does not list the callsign WHRA
any more. Angel 5 is now also called "WHRI". It is still listed at the
Greenbush, Maine, location on the "Technical Information" page - but that
same page lists T8WH as being in Hawaii, which is so obviously wrong (as
long as you know your callsign prefixes). And their frequency table STILL
contradicts itself, listing the SAME frequency from different
transmitters, with different programs, at the SAME time. I notified them
about that at the beginning of A09, but they still couldn't fix it.

Someone at WHR is really not paying attention. With such faults you just
can't trust any information on their website.

POLAND One of Twoje Radio transmitters, probably from 1584 kHz, is on
1558.15 kHz drifting a little bit up and down. Heard on 28 May 2009 after
1800 UTC and also in the morning of 29 May 2009. Before and after 0700 UTC
there was no local program so it looks like this transmitter relays their
central program only. IDs: "Twoje Radio AM".

USA KUSW/KTBN Shortwave Aerial Photo. I was just putting together some
info on the local Salt Lake City transmission sites, and came across this:

It's a maps.live.com aerial and bird's eye view of the old site, as they
were taking it down. Could be that the photos were taken the day I stopped
by to say "goodbye" to the place, except there aren't any cars in the lot.

You can see the old tower bases, to the left of the fenced off feed point
area, and the two ocean cargo containers that were being filled to go to
Anguilla. One held the tower components, the other was the transmitter.
Cool, huh?

For my interview with Glenn Hauser today, I'd like to find some MP3
examples of jamming. Especially of jamming of a U.S. broadcast or the BBC
being interfered with, so my listeners can understand what is happening.
Marti jamming would be good, too. Firedrake, CNR, whatever.
Any MP3's would be welcome at <david @ coursey.com>
Thanks!

BETHANY STATION PROJECT WILL NEED $12M-$14M, PLUS OPERATING FUNDS
The Middletown Journal By Dave Greber - Staff Writer May 29, 2009

Renovating West Chester Twp.'s 1940s-era former Bethany Station could
bring an estimated 30,000 visitors at its peak and $1.7 million annually
to the area once construction is complete later this year, officials told
trustees last week.

The $12 million to $14 million project looks to turn the former Voice of
America Bethany Station - a landmark that spread messages of democracy
throughout the world for more than five decades via shortwave radio - into
The National Voice of America Museum of Broadcasting.

Radio Broadcasting in New Guinea: The Port Moresby Story - VIG & VHSU.
In recent time, we have begun a series of progressive topics here in
Wavescan on the story of radio broadcasting on the island of New Guinea.
Thus far, we have shared with you the early origins back in the era of the
old spark wireless stations; and on this occasion, we take a look at the
New Guinea story, in Port Moresby itself.

You will remember from the previous program on this topic that the first
wireless station located at Port Moresby in the Papua section of New
Guinea was a temporary facility erected on Paga Hill in March 1911. A
permanent spark wireless station was erected on the edge of Port Moresby
two years later. This permanent 5 kW electrical transmitter was
constructed from equipment provided by Father Shaw and his wireless
factory on the edge of Sydney in Australia.

Wireless station VIG in Port Moresby was installed for the purpose of
Morse Code communication with shipping in the waters nearby to Port
Moresby, for contact with Sydney with commercial traffic and government
messages, and for inland communications throughout the eastern half of the
island of New Guinea. The long distance communications with Australia were
often handled via intermediate stations that relayed the Morse Code
messages on to the next nearest wireless station. These intermediate relay
stations were located at Cooktown and Townsville, on the Pacific coast in
the northern areas of the state of Queensland.

In October 1915, all wireless stations throughout the Commonwealth of
Australia and all neighboring islands were placed under the control of the
Australian navy, which formed part of the British navy at the time. It
might be added that Port Moresby was a quite small town during this era,
and it was described as having the character of a small outback town in
Queensland.

Station VIG in Port Moresby was taken over by the Australian government
soon after the end of World War 1, though it was transferred back to the
original owners, AWA in 1922.

It was around the year 1925 that the spark wireless stations in coastal
areas of Australia and nearby islands were modernized with the
installation of electronic transmitters utilizing the recently introduced
valves, or tubes, made in England and the United States. The Port Moresby
station, along with all of the others in the maritime service throughout
the South Pacific, was upgrade with the latest available electronic
equipment.

In March 1931, AWA installed a high speed telegraph centre in Main Street,
Port Moresby which keyed a new out-of-town facility that contained a 5 kW
transmitter and a three mast antenna system beamed on Sydney.

With the progress of the Pacific Conflict, the civilian population in the
city of Port Moresby was evacuated to Australia in December 1941, and the
main operating facility for the radio station was transferred into Wonga
Cottage, at a place called Five Mile, which was of course, 5 miles out of
town. Wonga Cottage was in earlier times a quite famous vacation home for
a wealthy family living in New Guinea.

That was the story of the AWA communication station VIG, from its earliest
installation up to the early 1940s.

However, it so happened that AWA established another radio communication
station in the province of Papua during this same era. It was an air radio
facility for communication with aircraft and it was operated by AWA on
behalf of the government Post & Telegraph Department.

Initially this station was on the air under the callsign VHPM, with the
letters VH indicating an Australian aircraft facility and the letters PM
obviously indicating Port Moresby. Following the initial series of test
transmissions, the callsign was changed to VHSU.

Communication station VHPM/VHSU was heard in Australia, New Zealand and
the United States when it was on the air with aircraft communications and
also when it was in contact with a similar airways station located at the
regional air strip near Salamaua in New Guinea. It was noted in Australia
with traffic for various communication stations in New Guinea and
Australia, and the messages were read very slowly, and sometimes specific
words were spelled out.

Airways station VHPM/VHSU was active from September 1938 to around June
1940. There are no known QSLs from this station.

During this era around the middle of last century, the main AWA shortwave
station at Port Moresby, station VIG, was often heard in the same three
countries, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. On some
occasions, it was noted with communication traffic, and on other occasions
it was heard with program broadcasting.

Somewhat independent from the AWA shortwave facility was a new mediumwave
station which was on the air under the Australian callsign 4PM, and
shortwave station VIG sometimes carried a relay from this mediumwave
counterpart for the benefit of distant listeners. Every now-and-again, an
old QSL card from the AWA station VIG turns up, though these days they are
quite rare.

OK, then on the next occasion in this series of special features on radio
broadcasting in New Guinea, we will tell the story of the mediumwave
station 4PM and its shortwave relay counterpart VIG.

American DX Report.
Before we begin our "American DX Report", allow me to express our genuine
appreciation for the work of both Rhoen Catolico and Anniston Matthews in
the Singapore studios of Adventist World Radio. This edition of Wavescan
is the last from Singapore, and next week when you tune us in again, you
will note that the programming is researched and written in Indianapolis
and produced in the Miami studios of Radio Miami International, shortwave
station WRMI.

USA: The May 6 edition of the trade newspaper, Radio World, contains a
full page article on the history of the 10 kW shortwave transmitter that
was on the air in Philadelphia Pennsylvania under the pre-war callsigns
W3XAU-WCAI-WCAB. Subsequent to the close of this station at the end of the
year 1941, the transmitter was refurbished and taken to the secret spy
station, Camp X, which was located near Oshawa in Ontario. At this new
location, the transmitter was used for trans-Atlantic traffic with
Bletchley Park in England under the designation, Hydra. The usage of this
historic shortwave transmitter in Canada was terminated in 1969, and
probably unceremoniously scrapped.

Antigua: The New Zealand DX News states that the mediumwave transmitter on
the island of Antigua was decommissioned some 25 years ago due to the age
of the equipment. However, plans are in hand for the installation of a
digital transmitter which will occupy the same spot on the radio dial, 620
kHz.

Congo: According to BBC Monitoring, the radio stations in the Democratic
Republic of the Congo are no longer permitted to relay the programming
from Radio France International. This prohibition also includes Radio
Candip, which operates with 1 kW on 5066 kHz and it is one of the few
shortwave stations on the air in the Congo.

USA: The monthly radio magazine, Popular Communications, reports that two
rarely heard radio stations were logged in the United States during a
recent unusual propagation opening. These two stations were the Faroe
Islands with 200 kW on 531 kHz and Greenland with 10 kW on 720 kHz.

USA: The monthly radio magazine, Monitoring Times, reports that a radio
company in Oklahoma plans to erect a free standing radio tower 1,500 feet
high. Neither the FCC radio licensing authority nor the FAA aviation
licensing authority have yet given approval for the erection of this tower
which would stand a little over a quarter of a mile high.

Monaco: According to a report from Jari Savolainan in Finland, the
maritime communication station 3AC in Monte Carlo is on the air with a
bulletin of news from a local FM station twice daily. These news
bulletins, three minutes in duration, can be heard at 0700 and 1100 UTC in
the upper side band mode on four shortwave channels, 4368 8728 13146 and
17260 kHz. In times past, Monaco Radio 3AC has issued a QSL card as
verification of reception reports.

Australia: In an unusual move, two FM stations in Queensland, Australia
are returning to the mediumwave band. The New Zealand DX Times states that
these two stations are 4CA in Cairns returning to 846 kHz and 4MK Mackay
returning to 1026 kHz.

USA: The annual meeting of DRM USA, Digital Radio Mondiale and NASB, the
National Association of Shortwave Broadcasters USA took place in Nashville
Tennessee on May 7 and 8. In a report regarding the recent DRM digital
tests from the FEBC station on Saipan, KFBS, John Stanley stated that two
Continental transmitters at 100 kW were modified for the occasion with an
exciter from HCJB in Indiana. Two channels were in use, 11650 kHz and
11580 kHz. It was stated that reception in Japan was flawless, and some
listeners in Europe and Russia also heard the programming.

In a call to the manufacturers of radio receivers, Adil Mina from
Continental Electronics in Texas stated that the greatest need at the
present time is for a mass produced low cost digital receiver for use in
countries like India for example, where plans are underway for the
conversion of the home service shortwave stations to the digital mode.

Canada: Brandon Jordan in Memphis Tennessee has received a QSL card after
a long, long wait. In June 1993, Brandon sent a reception report to
station CSIC in Canada regarding transmissions on 7425 and 7413 kHz, and
he received the QSLs as form letters just recently, a wait of fifteen
years and five months.
